Makrinitsa 1966

Description:
Makrinitsa is a traditional village of the Municipality of Volos, in Thessaly, Greece. It is famous for its traditional color, the special architecture and for the magnificent view it has towards Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf. Hence it was given the nickname “the balcony of Pelion".
The first shot of the film, which was taken from the city of Volos, is a zoom in on the village of Makrinitsa, which is built amphitheatrically, at the foot of Pelion. Secondly, we get a closer view into the houses of the village and then we are in Makrinitsa to admire the special building structure with the unique and indigenous characteristics, as they are built with slabs and stones of the wider area.
We see old sycamores (or Platanus), multi-storey mansions and smaller houses and from a passage of two buildings we can see the bell tower of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin. A small shop that sells Greek Folk Art items, postcards, a small sign informs us: "Cigarettes for sale" and on a sign, above the entrance of the shop, is written the name of the owner “Eleni Maredi”, and below “Victim of the war 40-41”.

Afterwards, we are in the courtyard of the Church of Saint Ioannis Prodromos, in the main square of the village and from various small openings, as it seems that the church was closed, we can see the wooden altarpiece with the dance of Salome and Saint John the Baptist.
