His version of Red Pony here is absolutely stunning... you can tell that he practices for hours and hours and hours and hours every week. His muscle memory and his ability to improvise and change up certain parts of the song is absolutely mindblowing... he is the greatest acoustic guitarist of all time, no question. A national treasure of the United States.

Hi - agree totally. I can play Red Pony, and its so great to be able to play some of Faheys instrumentals, but the one thing that always stuns me about his playing is his right hand technique and his incredible speed. I think I play it OK, for an amateur but when I watch Fahey, he's playing it at twice the speed and no mistakes. I cant even go there lolol. IMHO he was the best. He lost me towards the end of his career, and it was sad that he dismissed his early stuff - those early albums were gold. cya Doug

At “Brenda’s Blues” this performance stops being fantastic and becomes absolutely magical. Truly inspired music.

An audience member says it all at 56:51 or so! This may be the single best overall live Fahey recording out there, and I return to it again and again. This recording of Red Pony is awesome, though I also love both the one on Live In Tasmania and adore the raw savage version on the 1981 New Varsity show as well ...

After coming across Fahey's music I changed my guitar tuning and I'll never go back.
It is such an approachable but deep expression of so many different styles.
It's beautiful, somber, happy, energetic, soft, ominous, familiar but amazingly eclectic.
John Fahey is a timeless inspiration.

Which tuning do you play in most often? And what is John playing in for this concert? Thank you.

@@tuckercahillchambers1361 The tuning I use is DADF#AD, I believe this is the tuning Fahey would be using here, and for most of his songs. In the tutorial for Poor Boy Long Ways from Home by Fahey himself, he tunes to DADF#AD. Cheers!

@@tuckercahillchambers1361 He's using a bunch of different tunings in this concert including standard E in which he has witten numerous songs. He's a big fan of open minor tunings whether it be c#, d, g or whatever, but he's certainly not afraid of standard or tunings close to (drop d, double drop d). He's rarely tuned to pitch (A being 440 hertz), he likes to tune down about half of a half step of the key he's in - which is why it sounds terrible if you play along with his recordings after using a tuner :)

I was discovering him last year and was sooo impressed, also didn't know before, that some of my tracks on acoustic got a kinda similiar soundvibe to Fahey. I was also reading some articles about his not so well lived life, but everytime I see him playing, there is such beauty and truth in his way of how he play the acoustic🙂It's so rare and I love it.

Thank you for uploading the full performance.
Fahey put on such a great show in this one.
Such a treasure to me. Wish I was able to see him live but I was born in 98 so a little too early to be there. These videos are so amazing and this man has influenced the way I look at guitar so much.

This guy is so bad. My 10 year old sounds ok picking on an open tuning. Really sad guitar playing compared to what’s on the internet now

If your son plays an open tuning, is because John Fahey kept these, and some of the bluesmen who used these tunings, alive. Also, if you listen to instrumental music played on an acoustic guitar today on the internet, that too didn't even exist before John Fahey's.

If you really cant hear the power of this performance thats just a shame for you, this mans music is some of the most beautifully eloquent music ever channelled by human hands, he takes you on a journey back through your life and memories by pouring his own into his instrument, I think this man gave his life to his instrument and the totality of human existence can be found in these songs, so if you dont feel that I just feel sorry for you and id also appreciate it if you didnt disrespect him or the people who understand what he was doing by writing some infantile comment on CZcams.
