I spent $0 to modify my BMW i8 exhaust and I love it!

  • Here is an audio clip of what my BMW i8 exhaust sounds like after modifying the exhaust flap. Several runs are made in EcoPro and Comfort Mode with Hold State of Charge enabled, which doesn't enable the fake exhaust sound inside the car. Without sound augmentation, the true sound of the mid-engine can be heard. The muffler is still stock, which I like better than aftermarket exhausts, which make the car sound like a Diesel or Briggs and Stratton.

    Quite amusing actually. I have to agree, even though I mostly prefer the quietness and the noise dampening in most cars this exhaust sound is an unexpectedly good and sporty, and that from such a small engine. I can very easily see myself live with something like that, all the time, for sure. I am starting to think that all those complaining about the i8 exhaust must rethink their comments. It must be a pretty good exhaust actually to get that sound out of the 3 cylinder.
    What is even more brilliant about this is that, for someone like me it would be so simple to change between using the quiet or noisy exhaust in minutes. It just adds to that whole sense of great configurability to get it just the way you want it when you want it like that. Thank you once again for sharing.

    See what happens when you get out of your "comfort zone?"😉 I read the thumbnail and I thought, "Oh-oh, Pat's pulled a StreetSpeed and pulled out his Sawzall.🤣
    I like the quality of the mic you're using. Does it totally eliminate the use of a mic clipped to your shirt? Also, if you're filming outside, does it eliminate wind noise?
    Save the Wave🙋🏼‍♂️

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety +1

      Definitely out of my "Comfort Zone" Peter. LOL! I usually only use this mic if I have to walk around in public or talk with others. It does have a fuzzy cover on it so it's good in wind. It's also a directional mic so when I have talking behind or beside me, it's harder to hear that commotion. The lapel mic is better for the garage as I'm moving around and can always pick up my voice when I turn away from the camera. I also use a wireless transmitter/receiver for that. Using the GoPro built-in mic is the worst case for me. For others like Streetspeed, HPO and Matty, it works great, because of how they Vlog, but for me, it left me wanting more. So, I mainly use this directional mic or the lapel mic wirelessly. No Sawzall for me, LOL! Next video will show how stupidly easy it was to mod this exhaust.

      Thanks Pat. I'm glad I asked about the mic in that I learned it's directional. It does make a difference. Looking forward to your next upload showing how "stupidly easy" the mod is. I'll be the judge on that. I am an expert on "stupid!"

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind words and for joining the channel. It's possible that the i8 will be much more affordable in 10 years. My only worry is that 10 years after the model is no longer produced, BMW doesn't legally need to make parts for it. So, if there is a computer module failure, it may be catastrophic. I hope that's not the case but only time will tell.

      @@PatsGarageOnline is it pretty a certainty that bmw will stop making parts after ten years? Or is there any examples where bmw have continued to support discontinued models after their legal obligation period has expired?

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety

      Parts manufacturers typically continue for a certain period of time, especially if the part is used on other cars. However, I wouldn't expect a carbon fiber tub to be available after they legally never have to make one again.

    can you rev in Neutral and hear the exhaust?

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety +2

      Interestingly, while I was doing this swap, I set up a camera to try to capture a before and after mod recording while it was idling in my garage. I could tell the difference by ear, but couldn't in the audio I captured on the camera. I really wanted to be able to show a distinct difference to showcase what the mod sounds like, but I couldn't capture it. It took some experimenting to find out how to truly capture it and this video is the result. Even if I lowered the window, the camera would compensate for the road and wind noise by flattening the sound and making the exhaust sound even quieter than it does with the window closed. But, by ear, with the window open, it was louder. So, this was the best I could achieve for the public to hear. And THANK YOU for your continued support of the channel! I will be posting the video to modify the exhaust this week. Please stay tuned. If you give it a try, you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.
