This doesn't get rid of the problem that I tend to have with these spring traps, which is getting a mouse by the end of its face - crushing its snout but not smashing its head enough to kill it. Then you've got a badly injured, hideously bleeding mouse screaming as it thrashes around trying to escape that you get to crush to death. I had it happen three or four times out of about ten catches, then I just gave up on that kind altogether.
Jason Patterson or breaking the skin while everything pops up and lands upside down blood oozing out on the floor and being stuck to the floor in the morning. I now put all of it on a piece of paper.
Yeah, it looks like that's how that mouse was caught: by the nose. I think the shock was enough to kill it, but these mice definitely didn't have to put their whole heads in the trap. I think Victor needs to do a bit of redesign.
IMHO, you need the flip and slide trap... see Shawn's numerous vids.

Good review and demos. I have been setting mouse and rat traps for decades. Best trap I have used is a Victor black plastic snap trap with removable bait cup. You remove the cup, fill with bait and screw it back in with a twist. No need to get your hands in the jaws. But I lost many traps to skunks, bobcats, foxes you name it, so I use thin chain or links I make from wire and chain the trap to an immovable object. Now I lose no traps. If you just put bait in teh cup, some clever mice/rats can lick it out (and ants eat it), so I drill two small holes in the bottom of the cup and put a wire from the bottom. I soak a scrap of paper towel or better fine window screen in p-nut butter, wad it up, stuff it in the cup and use the cup's wire 'staple' I made to hold the wad in the cup. Now the bait can't be stolen, nor can the trap. The rat trap is identical to the mouse version, just much bigger. Powerful, nothing escapes. I do find just heads in the trap sometimes, the rest chewed off by 'neighbors'.

GenEmperor I mean obviously not but that does not change the definition of the word mercy used in this situation. Here it is being used something that relieves suffering. Compared to the normal mousetrap where like he said they suffered by starving to death or suffocating, this was instant.

I've already been building these for years out of scrap wood. Mine are to keep from killing birds that love peanut butter too. Also these wooden covers I make keep the rain off the bait.

I had the same problem before with a mouse's leg being caught, and I said to myself I would never use one of those traps again. Hopefully this will prevent that from happening because no creature should have to go through that, even a mouse.

u can do the same thing by putting that old style trap inside a mason jar laying on its side, the mice have to walk on top of the trap inside the jar insuring they are in the right position for the trap to be effective, that's how I got rid of the mice in my moms house

Interesting to see that someone came up with the same idea I came up with at least 5 years ago. We have made and sold what is the same concept used with similar but different traps in a simpler way with great results requiring no modifying.

Veeeeery nice. I've seen some weeeeird positions for mice in traps. Glad to see someone addressed that.
I started using these plastic black snap traps made by Pic corporation & I must say I'm quite impressed with them they set quick & easy. Plus they offer almost 100% kill every time. I did take someone else's advice & glued a piece of dog food to it so they can't just grab it n leave, it makes them stay there to eat and gives better chance of kill. I picked them up for $3.00 each at Big Lots
I think Victor was just losing sales and thought "Hey, let make this POS thing and call it humane, it doesn't work if you don't secure it with nails and sand down the edges to fit in the plastic cover but hey, we just want sales."
I doubt Victor had anything to do with it.
Where's my Irish whiskey? Tullamore. They used to have those rat snares that had serrated edges where the rat would bleed heavily after dying. I guess they decided to smooth them out to make them more humane

I don't have mice problems, I have a rat problem. And I get partial catches, legs and bodies. I am very handy and and will build a larger setup like that for my rat traps. THANK YOU! I have two dogs and the mastiff boxer mix will mess with the trapped rats if they drag the trap out in the open.

We always drill a 1/8 inch hole in the corner of the wood and put some baling wire through it and then attach it to a tent stake in the ground so nothing can drag it off
Shawn, it's always best if to be humane but I think these add-ons aren't as effective as the method I've used for 40 years. I've had the best success with the Victor traps for mice and rats. But I noticed a that either could lick every bit of peanut butter off a trigger even inside the rolled part without setting off the trap. I figured out to wrap make a ball of peanut butter with hair or thread. Then the rat or mouse gets in there finds the thread and pulls at it. Snap.
What I really hadn't thought about until seeing this video is the critter being in the best position for a quick humane kill. When the mouse or rat gets its teeth on that thread inside the peanut butter, in the dozen or so rats or mice I've caught, even if it's at an angle, it's still struck on the head or neck and killed humanely. The whole trick is to wrap several loops around the trigger with the peanut butter, the more tangled the better. Give it a try.
I have to add, I've been around bears, bison, coyotes, blue whales, rattlesnakes, raccoons, a pair of great white sharks on either side of my kayak. By far my scariest encounter with a wild animal was in the Arizona desert one night finding myself 4 feet from a skunk who was as surprised to see me as I was to see him. I froze, he froze, and all I could think was, the nearest water is a cattle tank two miles away.... The skunk backed off and so did I. Wild animals have a lot of sense.

I live in an old farm house with plenty of places for mice to get in so I have plenty of experience with these traps. I've cought them by the foot, butt end under the kill bar and at one point I herd the snap and came out to a stunned mouse flopping on the floor. My mice are pretty tricky, sometimes they lick off all the peanut butter and don't trip the trap.

I do the same method, but i make a wooden tunnel one entrance only and i place a metal mouse trap inside and it works perfectly.

I recently made something similar coz the trigger sometimes wasn't sensitive enough. Made something that forces the mouse to wiggle its head between the trigger and a small 'roof' over the trigger.

Those traps need to be of quality. I'll never forget when we had a rat inside the laundry machine, me and my dad would watch as the rat would come out, eat the bait and get in the machine without setting it off.

Rat traps fit in tall cottage cheese containers on their sides and braced so they don't roll.. and the newer rat traps with the plastic paddle work better than the old fashioned metal trip catch,,, and crushed sesame seeds work better than peanut butter for catching the desert pack-rats that I get...
