Pretty much everyone these days is a deist. Non-practicing Christians believe in a deist God, those of "no-religion" yet "spiritual" assume a deist God, even some of those who do go to church every Sunday have deist beliefs.
Very interesting. Deism doesn't survive as an intellectual position for long these days, but it's so incredibly pervasive in American society it's almost suspicious.

If I return to Christianity, it will be either as a Catholic or an Eastern Orthodox. My biggest hang-ups are eternal, inescapable Hell (and the fact that Ben Shapiro and a lot of really chill people are going there) and predestination to that fate.
And from what I've heard the latter is considered a heresy by both denominations.
This conversation has the power the change so many lives. I have converted Catholicism and it’s very serious to me. It’s extremely interesting, helpful and …the only word that explains how I’m feeling is….real.

There is no point to fixing anything if there is no difference between the vocation of secular life and the vocation of religious life. If there is no higher life to aspire to religiously, religious life has suffered a reduction. The only goal they have is the privatization of Catholic parishes into strong clerical families so that they can be supported through family money instead of the usual means. In this way they hope to sway power politically and shatter the authority of the bishops and the pope.

Every time Peterson has an epiphany through psychology, Barron is like “Duh. What do you think we’ve been doing over here the last 3000 years?”
Yeah. I've also been in the loop. Instead of trying reinevent the wheel I'm learning about what was done previously through the traditions preserved and taught by the church.

You are correct. The deposit-of-faith is passed down. Some might not agree that faith is passed down, but they think it's discovered by individual.
I think what is important is to notice when your brain says "That's right" and take a step back to analyze why you agree with the statement on such a deep level. Your paraphrasing vs what Barron actually said is a good starting point, because how you phrase statements gives light into how you think about a subject.

Why aren’t we taught what Bishop Barron beautifully explains about the Catholic tradition on the concept of God and how to follow the true path to living? Why has it got to be Jordan Peterson to eke out his Eminence’s explanations? It’s so sad that as a 55 year old having lived all my life immersed in Catholicism I finally get the answers to a million metaphysical questions on CZcams rather than at church. Bishop Barron life would be much easier especially for the younger generations if these teachings are included in the doctrine of faith. Thank you Jordan Peterson. You are a shining light in a darkened world. A prophet in our midst. Don’t stop telling the truth and quickening brilliant minds and souls to share and teach path to the highest possible good. Also consider the audience needs.
There's no excuse, the Church offers different levels of teaching if you wish, each area has its importance. Mass vs entry faith books vs advanced teachings. It's all available to the person wishing to learn

I challenge anyone who's never tried to pray the rosary for a week. Meditation, contemplation, story telling, new perspectives, etc, it has all that and more. Apply all the mysteries to your life and put yourself in the shoes of everyone present in those stories.
Why should people pray to Mary? Jesus is our intercessor and Savior, the only way to God and he's sent his Holy Spirit. Certainly asking fellow believers to pray for us without worshipping them or elevating them above God who created them is not objectionable, but there is clearly a difference between believers who are in the world but not of it and those who have gone to glory. When Saul has the witch of Endor call Samuel up, he asks why Saul has disturbed him.

Nobody likens her to God.
To your other point, that is not a very good comparison. Saul specifically had witchcraft done in an attempt to have mastery over what God alone has mastery over. He tried to communicate with the dead for his own personal gain (or so he thought).
Beyond that, doesn't it just make sense to ask the saints and Mary for prayer? They are closer to God than we, and Jesus Himself has shown that He listens to Mary, even though it was not yet His time. He loves His mom, and so do we!

It is true that our hearts were written in the Sacred Heart of the Almighty way back in The Beginning. Our conscience is a reflection of the Eternal Light that created us. If our conscience reflects on the Eternal Light that created us we can perceive it from our limited human perspective as Angelic Virtues. When our consciences are humbly aligned with God's Holy Will, we confidently follow God's Holy Will like the Charge of the Light Brigade - here are some of the deeper facets of the Eternal Divine Reflection of Christ's Love.
The Lord rebuke our pride. The Lord bless our humility.
The Lord rebuke our greed. The Lord bless our charity.
The Lord rebuke our wrath. The Lord bless our kindness.
The Lord rebuke our envy. The Lord bless our patience.

This multi-faceted perception of God should not be conflated with God Himself. This is our human perception of our experiences of God’s interaction with us. But as James 1:17 yet states, every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. As 1 John 1:5 states, this then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
If he doesn’t speak by the inspiration of the Spirit than how can he say all that he says?
Noone can truly say whether or not someone else has been filled with the Holy Spirit. Although, it seems to me that if JP had accepted Jesus, he would be saying certain things just slightly different. But to answer the question, even the devil knows the word of God.
Neolawyer - If I can speak the same words I have heard agnostics and atheists say and if I was assigned to be one of these protagonists to the Christian faith & doctrine, I can and have done it. My heart was not in it as my heart belongs to the Holy Spirit, 1 member of the Triune God.
Peterson, to my knowledge is not a Christian, but he is smart enough to be able to analyze Christianity and speak about it. I hope one day his heart will be in it.... because he finally gives in to the God of our world and becomes His.
(Looking at Peterson's body language as he listens to the bishop's words, I would guess he is still not God's.)

I think after dabbling in both, what we need is something like the Catholic faith but in the middle ages. That seemed to be the ideal in terms of traditional theology and bearing the most fruits.

Thank you both for this illuminating discussion. As someone who hasn't been able to conceive of myself as an atheist for quite some time, but struggles with some questions and doubts towards embracing Christianity, I really found some answers in this discussion that I was wrestling with and that helped to illuminate my path a few steps further ahead.
Pope Benedict said that grace - (love of God) we recieve from God and the more we give it away the more it multiples in the spiritual life. "It is in giving we recieve" easy to talk about but hard in real life .. 🙏
Oh this will be soul nourishing! I’ve been listening to so much Bishop Barron and Jonathan Pageau lately, filling in the embarrassing gaps my fundamentalist upbringing left me with, gaps in the knowledge of the church fathers and church history church story and the liturgy and iconography. This will be a feast of reason and flow of soul.
Speaking of story, I wove a coherent essay out of my insights connecting Dr. Peterson’s Great Schema suit jacket and the legend of St. Christopher, patron Saint of travelers and whom Jonathan calls “God’s Dog.” Entitled “A Suit, A Schema, and a Saint,” it will be out from Wrong Speak Publishing next week.

Have a look at Justin Trudeau, sharp dressed, clean hands... He is corrupt, a liar, a thief, should be jailed for his actions. The world has monsters, they typically wear suits.
His dressing is an expression of the internal state of his mind.
Not true, a lot of men can’t afford suits but that doesn’t make them any less of a man, I mean did Jesus and his disciples wear suits ?🤔🧠🤯
@@HeartOfDavidBruh It’s my understanding that mens’ suits didn’t originate until the 1800’s. That being said, I would imagine that back in Jesus’ time they did the best they could with what was available to them. That was the focus of my comment - it says a lot about a man (& a woman, too) when they take care of the sartorial items they have & use them to look the best they possibly can. The attention to detail - whether it’s a well-kept inexpensive white tee & blue jeans or a high-dollar 3-piece with tie tack & cuff links - clearly displays a person’s state of mind & the pride & care they take of their appearance.
Dressing well isn’t a matter of one’s financial state, although I’m sure a lot of people could afford to dress better if they’d better prioritize what they choose to spend their money on, a lot of people spend their money foolishly. In my eyes, dressing well is taking good care of the clothing items you have & paying attention to detail in being well groomed. Simply my thoughts!

I struggle with the same thing in deep conversation with others at times, so it's a good reminder to see it in others and work on it.

I attended an excellent piano recital earlier this evening, and now I am enjoying this fascinating discussion between Dr Peterson and Bishop Barron. We are so lucky to be able to watch content of this quality for free. Who needs a television these days, I haven't had one for over seven years now. I lose all awareness of self when playing the piano, where I play American songbook, jazz and my own compositions, all with improvisation. It is like entering a higher plane of consciousness. Both hands are involved of course, so both brain hemispheres are working hard at the same time. It is a wonderful feeling. So perhaps that is my "walking with God" moment, and I can get this too when listening to the greatest music. Thanks to both Dr Peterson and Bishop Barron for providing us with such a stimulating discussion this Thursday evening.

Finally someone of influence is awakening to the idea my friend and I were being blown way by 30 years ago. I saw this and could not get anyone to grasp it. I could never explain this to others like these go great minds are doing. Some see more in a walk around the block than other with a trip around the word. THESE TOO SEE AND COMPREHEND THE MORE!!! God is not dead. But we have killed God in our ignorance. We ARE the blind still leading the blind and serving the self in the name of God.

Bishop Barron is a patient man
I could listen to Bishop Barron discuss Biblical theology all day. He has a way of cutting through the BS for me and revealing the philosophical within the spiritual, or vice versa, whichever the situation calls for. It's really a Masterclass in the sublime, revealing the deeper meanings within the bible and it's charachters and archetypes, drawing a line between them and our own lives. I get the enrichment of his pearls of wisdom every single time i hear him speak. And i know it impacts me instantly, because my pride submits and my humility steps out of the shadows.
I'm just so, so thankful to live in a time when i get to hear him speak, across the globe, listening from the palm of my hand. His words just resonate and cut straight through my own personal folly, aligning my heart to Gods heart. Epiphany after epiphany, land, hit and change my thoughts and actions in ways that would take me months, years, who knows how long to do without them ?
Thank you God, for working through the Bishop as you do. Thankyou Jordan for allowing this wonderful synergy of your minds to come together again, and thank you BB. You truly are one in a million, a gift from God to those that have ears, and i appreciate you far beyond my ability to express in words, how profoundly you have impacted my life. God bless ❤

I just saw Dr. Peterson in Grand Rapids Michigan two days ago and I’m just baffled by how he has the time to travel on tour and do all that he does and still make podcast. It was a pleasure to meet Dr Peterson
