- This is my user impressions and review on the Pulsar Merger LRF XL50 Thermal Binocular. I've had this device from Pulsar in real hunting usage conditions, multiple times a week for a few months so far. It's an amazing thermal scanner and well worth considering if you're in the market for a high end device. This isn't a "how to" video with boring unboxing and basic menu function explanations. This is my handle on the Merger as a shooter and user.
If you would like a baseline I would encourage you to watch my review of the Merger LRF XP50 as there's a lot of crossover information I tried not to double up on.
• Pulsar Merger LRF XP50...
Big thanks Pulsar in Europe and Extravision in Australia for sending me the new Merger to play with. Without support from companies who are proactive in the hunting industry like this, these video's are mostly not possible with the speed tech is evolving.
If you're in the market to buy an Merger LRF XL50 or any thermal for that matter in Australia. Chat with Ben at Hunt the Night. He generally has the best prices in Oz and sells all the well known and supported brands.

Another well thought out, concise and entertaining video, so thank you !
Very much looking forward to more of your productions, and, please take care out there.
Cheers
Great review Nathan. Ive been trying to explain to a mate of mine some of the specs that are important when shopping for a thermal scanner and i did NOT do a very good job of it. Just gonna share your video with him and jobs a goodn😁👍🏻. You are very thorough while explaining real world functionality and yet deliver it so simply and concisely. And the novelty that you filmed this in a 100yr old shearing shed while waiting to head out on a contract shoot was not lost on me. Great job mate, much appreciated👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers mate, great to hear it all gels 👌
😊😊😮 Not sure what he is saying but I’m sure he is thoroughly trained in all the aspects of that product. As always, I like hearing him talk about something I enjoys not sure where I live you can even hunt at night. His videos are aways, my favorites. 😊😊😮
lost me....but I think it means it's a clearer view ....I think 😅😅😅
Nice presentation Nathan, I am not a current shooter, but boy the images made my trigger finger very itchy. Keep them coming, especially the feral cat(s) trophies.
Thanks mate 👌
Looking forward to getting my hands on the new mergers 👍
Good choice!
A great review, covering relevant criteria 😎
Much appreciated!
Algorithmic engagement comment.
I like the reviews and especially the comparisons.
Thanks
Glad you like them!
Gee, come along way, still got my dad's 70's binoculars. Thanks Nathan 😊
Very cool!
After watching about 30 deer per night in Halls Gap in February 2024, I’ve gotta say, these binos are awesome. Keep an eye on Hunt The Night for sales of the device. Also, when you buy the binos, you gain enough store credit to receive 2 extra batteries for free. I found that if I leave the battery in the device, even though it’s turned off, the battery will flatten. Not sure if this is normal. Good job Nathan. Definitely recommend selling your house and downsizing, to make these binos affordable.
Thanks mate
Good review Nathan. I tried these out at the Game Fair in the U.K. last weekend, looking out to 300 metres over grass car parks & people, thought they were very good. The only concern I have is when to actually buy a pair, as they make new models so often. Concern is that they get outdated too soon.
You can have that restraint on anything with Technology in it unfortunately.
Thermals are awesome. They make harvesting safer, more ethical and cleaner in terms of shot placement. You are a true embassador for these useful tools. I have people screeching to me every year that "this is illegal" and making a fuss about the scopes. I always reply that they should remove their zeiss or whatever scope from their rifle, because in their logic- everything that lets you see better in low light is cheating. A high end scope (not thermal) will help you see in very poor light conditions. But a thermal or even a digital will help you to be sure and safe. Do please keep the videos coming. They are fun and very informative.
Thanks mate 👌, I agree
I am happy with my accolade 2 😅
The sound on them is soft too...
Great review...
Thanks! 😃
From KAZAKHSTAN🇰🇿 good like 👍
I have no idea what all that technical jargon means but the result is impressive.
A thermal scanner (monocular in my case) was one of the things I wanted to upgrade for my style of hunting. The cost is well outside my budget. I can dream tho!
How much does one cost?
Great review as usual, I always like to see content like this that lists the range of the animal being viewed. Are the XL's focus fussy? going from close range out to mid, say going from 20M then to 80-100M this would give me an idea what they would be like to use around farm yards and buildings etc.
They are not all that focus fussy. But at 20-80m yes you will change focus as that's quite close.
Costly exercise but as a pest control shooter second to none you can’t do that with a spotlight great stuff loved the review
Thanks mate
11 grand is a lot of money, but they'd have all the latest and greatest tech in there to do all that, and that ain't cheap.
Exactly
Nice unit, good to see more of these 1024x + units coming online, would have been nice to have seen
Exciting times ahead for sure. A 75mm lens scanner definitely wouldn't appeal to me, just too large and impractical to store unfortunately. Scopes though..... I'm all for bigger lenses.
Another very thorough analysis and comparison of the XP50 and the XL model. However, although it’s deemed better on an overall score of circa 30%, nonetheless, why has it only got 40NETD when the XP is rated
Remember that there's positives and negatives to a 17um sensor compared to a 12um sensor regarding NETD. NETD isn't everything and sub 40mk is still excellent. It does seems a recent marking push in regards to specifications to get this super low but it introduces other issues with a 12um sensor.
Hey Nathan, would you go XL or XP if you dont generally use the zoom function? I dont think i have ever used the zoom function on my XP50 Pro 2... However, maybe i should be using screen in screen?Cheers 🫡
I don't really use zoom either, I did cover a bit of detail on the comparison and usage I recall on XP vs XL.
Nathan are you going to do a review on the entry level monocular like the Axion XM30F?
I have an entry level thermal video in mind. But no time line ATM with everything else happening.
Hi mate love your videos, would be it possible to do a review on a set under $2k and $1k, also scope add on of a similar price?
I'm using this kit for "work", unfortunately evaluating budget gear under professional conditions isn't possible. And IMO there's no sub $4k thermal scope I'd even consider buying unfortunately.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK thank you mate for the honesty, much appreciated , we hunt on the farm and was trying to figure out if we could find a cheap and cheerful solution.
Hi Nathan, struggling to decide between the Merger LRF XL50 and the Telos LRF XL50. Do you think the twin-eye view of the Merger is worth it over the Telos, or are the smaller dimensions/portability and weight of the Telos worth it over the Merger? This is for all-day deer stalking in Scottish highlands, without use of a vehicle during the day. I could make an argument for each model; tough choice between portability and weight of Telos vs nicer to use Merger!. Thanks in advance for your advice.
That's up to you mate. Spec wise on the sensor and eyepiece, they are equal. Just down to format factors preference.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK sure thanks, but you definitely prefer the Mergers over the Telos?
I am considering renting one of these two when I go to Yellowstone in April. My purpose is simply to locate wildlife. I will take photos of them if light allows. Will the xp50 detect wildlife one mile away, or do I need to rent the xl50? I don't necessarily need to see the animal perfectly with the binocular, but merely want to use it to find animals. Recommendations between either?
I'd consider the wildlife size, reference that compared to the human detection range. Go off that as a guide 👌
Can i see at night bird size 50 cm from 1500-2000 Meters ?
Really i need that answer please
Thanks
No, I doubt you'd see that.
Anything that makes identification better when shooting a vermin is worth every penny if it saves one native species of animals or maybe a person then buy it.
Absolutely a key aspect mate
🤔😵💫😵💫😵💫😶 oh i get it now 🤪🤑 costly but clearer and ranges in clearer ....right ....🙃👍
Hey Nathan what bino harness/pouch do you run for the merger
A Kuiu XL
Thanks mate
Stupid question, but are these filmed at day or night?
Does that make a difference?
Thermal will work at all times, but it's better at night as there's less UV and sunlight making the environment hot.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACKwhat if it like falls down and a lense scratches?
Can it be repaired like a car or do I have to buy a new device like with an Iphone?
I’m keen to know why you don’t run a category D semi-auto rifle yourself?
I went over that in detail on my last Q & Eh video 👌
Are you going to review your 308
In time, yes I will 👌
how much prich sir?
For PROFESSIONALS ONLY. 😉
I wanna see something from the advertised 2300meters away, hard to belief u can see anything at that distance...
The 2300m "detection" range is an industry standard for two vertical pixels of a man shaped object. Will you ID off that, I very much doubt it.
Can you record on these?
Yes, that's what all the thermal footage in the review is.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK yes it's nice but $2000 is way out my price range! They want way too much for these thermal pieces it's nuts.
I had the xenonics supervision I sold it. I'm trying to get the Atn binox 4k binoculars it's a better price even though these seem clearer. Some of the on eBay cost pulsar even cost like 7,000$ used. Dude that's nuts...
Will you hunt horses donkey and camel?
No, Australia is huge and those species are nowhere near where I'm based.
$11K???????
🤣🤣Yeah.. Goddamn Flaps, always an Issue...!! Bhaha
Waste of money. The LRF in both the XP and the XL have a range of 1000 meters. That’s the limit on your shooting range.
As a professional shooter it's uber rare to shoot over 400m with thermal. 99% is sub 250m and I've never needed more.
I can't understand what he's saying, is he Scottish?
Yes, no 🤯
What a price ?
I covered that in detail in the video
AUD $11K, USD $7063, GBP £5612.00
