On your next run, take a step for every comment you've ever got on this channel - those are true evidence of how you inspired us all to run further than we ever thought possible. Get it!
I ended 2022 with a severe hamstring injury that sidelined me for 12 weeks. After the first 10 weeks, I decided to incorporate more strength training, which helped with recovery and post-injury improvement. Unfortunately, I’m currently recovering from a lower back injury caused from falling on the ice during a run 3 weeks ago. Life has been giving me lemons, but like you, I’m using the lemons to make some AWESOME lemonade. Keep up the amazing work!

Definitely feel in the same boat. Broke a couple ribs end of August, was just getting over that when Covid finally caught up with me and took me out for a few more weeks, tried coming back from that and I had some post covid complications. Finally in mid December I was given the all clear by my cardiologist to push myself. Been taking it slow but it is awesome to see progress. Just want to be healthy for my second ultra this fall.
Starting over is always hard but I take inspiration from my brother-in-law. He has passed the five year mark with pancreatic cancer so every two weeks he gets knocked back to zero and then has 10 to 11 days to build himself back up. This is going from being difficult to walk a mile to being able to run eight to 10. He is on his 91st round of doing this now. Hopefully others can take some inspiration from him too. I would like to get him out your way to volunteer at Jackass Junction or maybe one of the stations on the Cocodona 250.

Jamie, you're not alone. The balance that sustains a perfect physical form is so delicate that is almost invisible. When everything's in order, in place (your family, your job, your finance, your health, YOU) then ir super easy to carry on with trainings and long runs and so. But when one of this things starts weighin' more than the others.. well that's the moment the energy needs to be refocused. And because is a necessary process we don't hessitate and don't feel a single thing. But the other elements become lighter and lighter and lighter. And so, you start spending less time doing the other things and more trying to level this one up. Time goes by and you realize: "oh s@#]t! it's been twelve weeks".
I'm right where you are right now, and let me tell you (and I think you must have already figured this out yourself) it has it's own magic bro.

After literally 2 plus years of running 365 days/year, I guess my 67-year-old body sent me a 'loud message' to take a short break. Getting back slowly towards a daily run routine, probably by March. No rush, slow and easy with lots of isometrics, core strength routines, and elliptical plus treadmill now underway till it's time to hit some outdoor trails.

I'm just getting back to running following an ankle injury at a 50 miler which required complete ankle reconstruction and tendon transplant 2 years ago. My home peaks are our local table mountains near the Sierra Nevadas, in central California. The elevation is 1k-1.5k'; rolling gain can be up to 15k' if you are out there long enough. When I can, I venture up to SNP for the Lakes Trails, Alta Peak, etc, which are about 9-12 miles and 2-4k' gain, depending upon the trail. If I plan to go higher than 10k', I backpack and make it a weekend thing to avoid altitude sickness. Peace.

Variety my friend!! I've lived and run in bad areas: flat, boring, zero elevation, with no trail systems. The bridge over the Intercoastal waterway was the largest hill. So hard to stay motivated in that environment. Life is too short. I now live in Colorado and can hike the 14'ers or run a gillion miles of trails. Everyday can be an adventure. Last weekend I did the Mile High Stair Climb in the tallest building in Colorado. Had a great time. I'm doing research on the Funicular's of the early 1900's and have run the Famous Manitou Incline and the funicular path, scar, up Lookout Mt. in knee deep snow. Had a blast! Variety!! Do a trail or a race you haven't done. Backpack. Climb a new mountain. Do fartlek in the aspens. Stop and count the deer. Hunt for geodes. Sit in a cold mountain stream. Learn the names of the wildflowers. Run into the twilight of your life.

You’re definitely not alone in this. A couple minor injuries set me off track a couple years ago. Then as I was finally getting my head back in the game, I broke my foot and had to have surgery. Coming out the other side of that situation is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m encouraged knowing I’m not the only person who struggles with this.
As for the “home mountain” question: I moved from Chattanooga, TN to Nashville five years ago. Chattanooga has Lookout Mountain (among other mountains/ridges, but Lookout is the crown jewel of the city), and Nashville has a lot of hills but, no mountains. This topic has been on my mind as I struggle with my own motivation to run. When I lived in Chattanooga, Lookout was my sanctuary. When I struggled to find excitement in daily life, I would escape to the trails. If road running got boring, I’d run on the trails. I spent so much time on that mountain sorting out the kinks in my life, and now I realize just how important that sanctuary was. What I would do to be able to retreat to those mountain trails again…

Good to see you back out, and into it. I just pulled the giant brake lever on year round trail running and mountain biking, and literally a 10yr, pretty hard core running fitness journey, so that I could have my bowed legs repaired. I'm 59 and have had them since birth. Learned via X-rays last year (June '22) that my inner knee joint areas are paper thin, if not bone-on-bone, and it's because the bow in the legs channels the forces of standing/walking/running/sports through the inner area of the knee, instead of evenly across the entire width of the knee. I decided that I would literally take a year off from life....work, training, biking, literally everything.....and be home bound for months at a time, and on crutches, in order to have a pair of High Tibial Osteotomies. Just had my right leg done on Jan. 23rd. If healing goes well, I can have the left leg done in Mar/Apr. I stopped running with a 10th R2R in Oct. and a gnarly FKT route on Thanksgiving day, and then started training hard on the mtb, in order to get myself in literal "race shape" all the way up to about 2 days before the surgery. I wanted to build a large fitness base, and I wanted to be strong enough to be able to use crutches really well, from the very start. I'm doing a video series about it: czcams.com/video/SDhvUzSehdU/video.html Just received a bunch of images from the surgery, so it's time to do Part 2 and show what's been done. Gonna be a rough year. Hoping for a huge payoff.

Jamil, so good to hear you are back at it, good luck to you. I entered a time of discouragement as I have aged and am now very slow. So I did a pivot, my goal now is short runs with as much speed work as I can do, just to get myself out of the doldrums. I also hit the weights on the regular. I did a 6 hour event in October where I actually kept up with some runners 30 years younger that me, so that bit of an ego shot helps keep me going. But 50Ks, probably done with those, I just can't hit the cutoffs. Gotta work with what I've got and be thankful I am still out there.

I ran R2R2R at the beginning of October last year and it was just a very big year of running in general with a 50-miler, a 100-miler and then R2R2R. I was so tired of running after the Grand Canyon that I figured I am just going to take a little bit of time off. And then that little bit of time turned into a little bit more! Haha... Now, I am slowly trying to get back into the groove, too! I want to get out running at least 3 times a week for now, but then I still don't quite feel like running yet, so I just go hike up a mountain. At least I'm out there! Our homepeak here in Dénia, Spain is called "Montgó" and it's a pretty picturesque mountain of similar height as Piestawa (753m) and we can do around 25k/2000m+ without repeating much, I think, but it easily connects to a ton of other local trail systems in the reagion (the 450km long GR330 starts right here for example). Jamil, If you ever want to try it out, feel free to drop by any time, you have a place to crash in our house :)
As far as building up from scratch, I'm also doing that right now, after I stopped running regularly when our first kid came 3.5 years ago. We ran on and off (the second kid didn't make it easier 😅) but only now start to get back into the swing of things. My wife is registered for OCC in Chamonix and does already a bunch of local races here, and I'm thinking of doing "Els Bastions" in Catalonia in May. We'll see if that works out 🤞

Had a menisectomy 2 years ago just before I moved to the tropics. Didn't know if I'd be able to run again. Getting that first bit of aerobic capacity back is so much harder than you expect but one day you get home and realise 'hey I wasn't thinking about how impossibly hard that was the whole time'. Slowly rehabbed and worked back up to about 30-40K a week consistently. It's hard to train and stay motivated there with the heat and humidity plus the complete lack of events.
Recently got the opportunity to spend 6 months away somewhere with a more permissive climate. Worked up to 60K a week and I'm running a marathon next weekend aiming for 3:10.
Took about 3-4 weeks before I really started to feel the training and volume kicking in and moving my paces upwards and heartrate down. Stick with it and keep slogging.

I so needed this to get my fire lit. it feels a little better see that others are in the same mindset. Some nagging injuries but more excuses have kept me off the trails. That won't work for me to finish even one of myTriple Crown races. I'm off early in the am for sure. I will see you you at Cocodona doing a night sweep and helping the battered runners at Mr Elden. Oh, and let me know if you need more furniture for your office.

Right there with you Jamil! Back to training myself just this week after not running since October. DNF'd my final race of last year and motivation dipped hard after that. A work mate drafted me in to a trail running/mountain bike relay race in March so I have that ahead of me to start up training again. Only 20 miles so it shouldn't be too rough! Was down in Phoenix last week visiting my folks shortly on the way through to the rest of a vacation. Didn't get a chance to run, but it was surreal to see the mountains I've watched you run on following RSGH all these years. Will be back down to do an Aravaipa event one day!

Getting out of a low motivation spell, it took me 2 years and change. Bike crash, then pandemic, then another crash, I just lost motivation. Decided to get back to my roots. No racing, no training, just go out there and have fun. Eventually I got my fitness and motivation back. Sometimes we tend to forget that we do this because it’s fun, we get lost in the training and racing aspect of it all.

I'm in the same boat. Lived in WY for 8 years and was running 40 miles a week. Then moved to coastal GA for 3 years and hated it. Stopped running to let my feet heal and just never got back at it. Now I'm in Albuquerque, and love it. So many mountains that are so close, especially the Sandias. Doing the same thing as you... Getting some slow climbs in to get my muscle back and getting vert. Will slowly work mileage up, but being 45, I have to keep the progress slow and steady.

Since you kindly asked, here in Michigan the motivation is there but the plantar faciitus has put me down hard. Have not ran in three weeks just trying to iron out this foot, painful process and is not recommendation to get PF....... No peaks here, but destination for a view is the Saginaw Bay which is connected to Lake Huron, most runs lead to the Bay and it is our peak if you will. Elevation is not something that is easily attainable...... Glad to see another great vid from ya man, you are the best around!!!! Get after it!

I'm in the same boat. I'm signed up for the Dam Yeti 50 so I'm getting in gear. I'm just not digging this cold, wet Appalachian weather. The most notable peak near me is Pinnacle Rock. The trails are so-so there and I rarely run them. I prefer driving up to the New River Gorge for my longer trail runs. Much nicer trails there.

    Hello from Macedonia.
I live in Skopje ,so our local peak is Krstovar at mt. Vodno.
It is 1066 meters or 3500 feet, from the bottom of the mountain to the peak it has 800 meters or 2600 feet and around 4 kilometers or 2.5 miles if you go the shortest trail.
It is very beautiful and the start of the trails is only 1 mile away from the city center.
    Best regards man
