    Make friends with the folks at your local sawmill! You can get a ton of lumber for wooden features when you inevitably have to drop a few trees

    I was so hyped when you started going on about natural trails. Bench cut trails are fun but nothing beats natural trails! Especially when you can use the terrain to create features to spice it up. I'm fortunate to have a crew of riders at my favorite local system that build awesome trails using limited elevation and what's available in the woods. The best!

    It won’t break tree branches, but check out the Fiskars 24” leaf rake. It flexes over roots, stumps and rocks and still picks up all the leaves on the our trails very efficiently. We use it for rake and ride trail building as well as general maintenance work. You can get it for around $20 at Home Depot. You won’t be disappointed.

    I built 3 trails, it's the hardest work I've ever done, like 3 to 4 hour intense gym sessions. Literally blood sweat and tears, definitely took a toll but also the body adapts, i got stronger and better at it, you do need to rest well.
    Respect to all trail builders

    A tip for budget builders, a quality folding saw can do as good or even better than a reciprocating saw. Can reach harder to reach branches, safer, cheaper, lighter and as fast. I use one garden shears for very small branches and roots, silky folding saw for medium branches, an axe for splitting rungs (froes are awesome if you can find one) and a chainsaw for making slabs and felling large trees. :)

  • @seanoneil277
    @seanoneil277 Před rokem +2

    Aaron, I love that trail envisioning & routing approach you use. I've used the same on two trails -- scan the landscape for support / line change vectors, look for game trails, minimize the bench cut needs for those very same erosion results you mention. It saves on building time and usually the end result "rides in" more interestingly than trails that are heavy on the land-sculpting. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished result of this XC loop. Thanks for making & sharing this video.

    Start to finish digs are so cool. Great to see your blank canvas and what it becomes. You'll obviously put in all the fun exciting bits but don't forget to add the boring drainage and sustainability tips to keep the kids trails running.
    Look forward to watching the build evolve.

    I began building bmx tracks as a kid and mountain bike trails in my fifty's! It's a great reward and workout and fun to just let the terrain tell you how to build it. A good tip is to work the dirt when moist and in the fall/winter when plants are dormant!

  • @kevinw6282
    @kevinw6282 Před rokem

    sweet, man! we have just 2.5 ac but it wasn't long and I had some trails cut in. At least a quarter of it is front yard and house foot print, but it's all hill also, have a small creek on it too. I have a similar idea of using the lay of the land, we had a couple of those deer/animal paths that we incorporated too. Have two little bridges over the creek at this point, loops that you can ride a bunch of different ways, always a work in progress but yeah, so awesome to have it right at the house, and for my kids to mess with too.

    your building ''chute'' trails,they cup up however much on each side,actually a clever approach, however an argument for crossing the fall line more directly is extended ride time,and sharable with less experienced riders.

    In Germany, most trails are built like that, because it is a pain in the ass to get permission to dig, so most are dug illegally. This way you also get as much trail as possible with the least amount of work.
