Waltzing Matilda (Choral Version) - Sydney Conservatorium Chorale

  • The song has never been the officially recognised national anthem in Australia. Unofficially, however, it is often used in similar circumstances. The song was one of four included in a national plebiscite to choose Australia's national song held on 21 May 1977 by the Fraser Government to determine which song was preferred as Australia's national anthem. "Waltzing Matilda" received 28% of the vote compared with 43% for "Advance Australia Fair", 19% for "God Save the Queen" and 10% for "Song of Australia".
"Waltzing Matilda" was used at the 1974 World Cup and at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976 and, as a response to the New Zealand All Blacks haka, it has gained popularity as a sporting anthem for the Australia national rugby union team. It is also performed, along with "Advance Australia Fair", at the annual AFL Grand Final.
Matilda the Kangaroo was the mascot at the 1982 Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane, Queensland. Matilda was a cartoon kangaroo, who appeared as a 13-metre high (42 feet 8 inches) mechanical kangaroo at the opening ceremony, accompanied by Rolf Harris singing "Waltzing Matilda".
The Australian women's national soccer team is nicknamed the Matildas after this song.
It is used as the quick march of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and as the official song of the U.S. 1st Marine Division, commemorating the time the unit spent in Australia during the Second World War. Partly also used in the British Royal Tank Regiment's slow march of "Royal Tank Regiment", because an early British tank model was called "Matilda".

I think it was 1984, my father bought me an electronic wristwatch from the Stempo brand. Waltzing Matilda was the alarm music for this watch. I've been searching the internet for this piece for years, and tonight I found it humming into the Google song finder. Turns out it was the Australian national anthem. Greetings to you too!

Back when I was a young US Navy Journalist, I had the chance to interview a real US Navy hero who was present at the battle of the Sunda Straight. His most clear memory of that battle was HMAS Perth charging into the guns of the enemy, flags flying brilliantly, every gun blazing... and every speaker on the ship exuberantly playing Waltzing Matilda. He lost a couple fingers in that battle when a shell fragment tore them off. But he fought on because he had that tune in his mind and he would not let those mates of his on Perth down.

Its a great song and words do not matter in anthems its the emotion that counts. For example the Foreign Legion march is about the Belgians not having any sausage and when the Welsh rugby team is winning they roar, not sing, Sosban Fach which is all about problems in a kitchen like the pan boiling over and the baby crying! BTW I think the most moving version of Waltzing Matilda is at the end of the movie "On the Beach"

One nuance about the song people either forget or are unaware of is that squatters were people who had staked their claim on land without legal consent. It was a big issue in late nineteenth century Australia. So while the swagman stole the sheep the idea of the sqatter being wronged in that sense is correct he was also perceived as being a bit suspect himself at the time of the songs writing. Collusion between squatters and local authoritities was often perceived as being corrupt by people of the time and thus the sympathy for the swagman. This dynamic also played into the stories about bushrangers and explains why they often had sympathy from the general public despite the vast majority of them being basic cut throat bandits.
The debates about the rights and wrongs of both sides can be pretty nuanced and complex and are best understood in the context of the time they happened. The legal position of the squatters was a complex one under British law as they were seen as having occupied crown land without owning title. It became a very hot political issue at the time and took a long while to be settled.

*****- the swagman steals a 'jumbuck' from the 'squatter' (in other words steals a lamb from the farmer or land owner, on whos property the swagman is passing through) and thats why the 'troopies' come after him.

    • @BMTroubleU
      @BMTroubleU Před 9 lety +3

***** - those are some interestingly communist sentiments you have there my friend.
Would it be fair to say that you dont believe in the right of people to purchase and own land or livestock? If so your preconceptions are going to skew your understanding of this song. The overwhelming majority of people understand and accept the right of people to buy, sell and own things including land and animals. As such consider the following-
"...Jumbuck (noun) is an Australian English term for sheep..." (but being small enough to fit in his tuckerbag it was probably small, aka a lamb)
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumbuck
      And also the following-
"...Sheep (Ovis aries) are quadrupedal, ruminantmammals typically kept as livestock..."
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheep
So in conclusion the most likely scenario is that landowner or farmer took issue with the swagmans theft of his property and alerted the police in order to have his property rights enforced. Instead of facing the charges, this idiot vagabond ran into the creek and drowned himself.
I hope this helps you understand, in context, what has happened in the song and I will be happy to accept you have your own political ideologies- just allow yourself to understand the general context before getting lead astray by them.

Killing a girl named Matilda and being acquitted, for me Australian is an OFFENSE, only in Italy do these things happen in Vercelli!

If an insult means killing a 2-year-old girl with heels and being acquitted it seems to me the country of BANANAS! Both parents acquitted!

as a non australian, (Canadian) it's mind boggling you guys didn't use this as your anthem. The anthem you guys use now is terrible in every way imaginable. Should have kept GSTQ rather than the current one. Or change it to Waltzing Matilda.

The lyrics for our current national anthem were actually changed (without telling the public until it was too late),I'm not positive why, and now our current one does indeed sound trashy
