I love how the scene was fictionalized. From the distance shot, where we see Susan waiting and enjoying her drink, we actually see her from Edward’s perspective. It feels like he actually came to see her only from outside the restaurant just to see how she waits and desperatly hopes that there's still a chance for their love until this hope faded away and left her bitter. It was his revenge and yet his suicide as he has chosen this path and let go his one and only love.
If you notice, there are levels of emotion throughout the music. In the beginning, the melody is tender and hopeful but when she realizes he doesn’t show up, the tone of the melody shifts to sorrow and anguish and ultimately to a somber note. False hope is what speaks to me when I listen to it.
This is the scene where susan realized that she is the one who killed edward’s wife and child. She was the one who also killed tony’s wife and child in the novel.
Just seeing this scene alone makes me cry... But if you watch the whole movie, the emotional impact is just immense. Amy is goddamn brilliant in this film.
This movie shook me to the core. The casting, cinematography, music and the direction all were amazing. This scene here is the perfect example of what it feels like to have your heart broken after having a slight hope of reconciliation. Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Ford and Mr. Abel take a bow.
The melody is fitting. It starts off as tender and hopeful but when she starts to realize he won’t show up, the melody shifts to a much hurtful and devastating note. False hopes is what I get from this scene.
It was my second date with the girl I fell in love. We went to a cinema to watch this movie. We had no clue how deep snd serious this movie was. Soon after it she went abroad and I lost her. This music and this scene actually has tragic meaning for me personally.
This scene is beautiful and devastating at the same time, in her expression we can see that she get it, and she knows she deserves it, Amy is a brilliant actress, it’s amazing how her eyes can express pain, suffering, loniless and sadness, it’s amazing!
I just finished watching it, didn't have a clue "why did Edward not show up"? After reading and watching this movies' ending explanation, i just realized how deep this movie is. Loveless marriage is more horrible than being single 😭
What comment can I write when we are seeing probably one of the most beautiful no-words sequence ever filmed ? Lets just dry the tears from our eyes and stand up running our biggest applause.
Still one of my ult favorites. It's wonderful how Tom Ford, spending all his life in the glamorous world of fashion, could create films with so much humanity like this one & A single man. Still waiting for his 3rd masterpiece.
Amy Adams is so underrated as an actress. The amount that she can communicate with just her eyes and facial expressions is unreal. This scene is so powerful because it shows at the end her full realization of throwing true love away.
The movie reminds of the song "You and Me(We Wanted It All)" by Frank Sinatra. You were dumb and it's easy to be happy then you get smarter and believed that what used to make you happy were shallow things and then the irony that what you replaced it with are things that are more shallow.
Such an immaculate movie ending I have ever seen... Symphonic, sublime, sensitive, sorrowful... This amazing piece of music composes perfectly the scene, where Amy Adams portrays one of the most toughest roles and she is actually holding all the movie flow with just her eyes... Immaculate... Never thought that Amy Adams was such a good actress... She got me like this...
Growth is one the many meaning of green. Throughout the scene, green is observed from her dress thru the interior of the restaurant. It is sad that she got stood up but I think the whole experience will make her grow and it is ultimately transformative.
This scene, you feel every single emotion she is going through, the anticipation, the waiting, the hope slowly fading.... And finally the horrific realization. And as upset as you are, like her, you realize its exactly what she deserves.
just such an amazing scene. He doesn't even give her the courtesy of closure. If he showed up, even to berate her. It would indicate he was still hurt and in love with her. Gylenhaals performance was amazing no surprise there. But Adams ability to completely act with mainly her face needs to be praised

According to the book, he never went because he was already dead...I dont think this was a revenge. It was his reality .He "died "too after the death of his unborn child and his feelings for her. The "revenge" had to do with the fact , that now she knew it too and she could feel it . She had to wait this but she didn"t notice.Noone won. Both threw their lives
I don’t agree that no one won. He was able to go through what felt like death and was finally able to put it behind him. The fact that he didn’t show up and she did was convincing to me that she will always regret her decision to leave him. He moved on and could care less to see her, that was his revenge and her karma
The most realistic movie 😊 Everytime a woman messes up in her past because of many reasons, she never will get a second chance … Sadly, the right person at wrong time is true…

Tom Ford, the director, said that he views this ending as a sign of Susan's revitalization, that her experience through this movie has pushed her to pursue a better life than hers. So, I guess, don't be so pessimistic.
Less useful than at a younger age? I agree. Totally useless? I disagree. It's possible for someone to make his own life better at virtually any age, especially Susan, who is still living what many would consider to be the apex life.
He didn't... I think him dying in the other line while killing the bad guy symbolize that by not coming to dinner he also destroyed himself because big part of him still loved her. He won't have any true joy or happyness in his life anymore, he is spending his days in light melancholy just waiting for The End.
