Isn’t it strange to hear a presidential speech without the ‘me me me ‘ rhetoric? Haven’t we not been traumatised by these last 4 years more than we think? I think it is not just America that needs healing.

It saddens me that in this day and age we still have to make such a huge deal about having a 'female' or 'black' or 'asian' (or whatever denomination) as a VP, President, CEO etc.
Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely relieved Joe and Kamala won. But let's be clear that Kamala will make an excellent VP on her skill, experience and strength alone. Let's start focusing on those merits.
Except people don’t get opportunities due to their own merit as evidenced by the fact that she’s the first ever woman of colour (and first woman at all) as VP and there’s still not been a female president. It’s important to forefront identity positively when it’s so often talked about negatively. I hope one day it won’t be necessary as it will be a norm but until then it is important.
That premise inherently downplays the fact that Until at best 20 years ago that was an unwritten requirement that u be a white male to hold such positions. Not saying you mean to, but saying “ jus focus on merits “ implies it was merits that prevented it before hand.
I don’t think it’s so much that she is a black VP but more that an old, white man has chosen a woman to be a VP. To me that speaks volumes about Biden and the team. I believe it to be a genuine choice too.

The only reason I voted Kamala for President, is it would be Historic. I haven't yet researched her past political record, policy views, etc., but she seems like a great person . As a non-American I don’t understand the constant erasure of her South Asian background from the headlines. She is after all the first ever Indian/South Asian to not only take office as VP, but to have gained this level of traction in US politics. Her mother’s immigration and claim of the American Dream is the reason Kamala stands on that stage today. I know the culture is a big part of who she is, what has shaped her, how she was raised... so it’s a little painful to see it relegated to a footnote (sometimes not even). It’s not about race as much as it is about the culture, values, and the longtime lack of visibility in the mainstream. Maybe “black” alone is more palatable, more acceptable, less threatening because of the unfortunate legacy of South Asian immigrants bowing to the white patriarchy for the sake of assimilation? I don’t know. But it sucks to witness.
