  • Hop aboard my favorite Amtrak Route: The Vermonter. Taking this legendary trip is real treat and a beautiful ride. As a teenager I travelled regularly from Meriden, CT all the way to White River Junction to visit friends. However, this Winter the trip was a bit cloudy, cold and overcast but nonetheless still pleasant. We don't go as far as Vermont, just to Northampton, MA.
A bit of history: When The Montrealer service was discontinued in 1995, The Vermonter was created as its replacement to travel in both directions from Washington, DC to St. Albans, VT. Montrealer service had previously travelled via the Connecticut River Line stopping at Holyoke, Northampton and Greenfield stations. In 1995, those stations were shut down and trains were re-routed from Springfield onto the New England Central Railroad Line via Palmer, MA - a taxing procedure for passengers but a sight for Palmer railfans. Surprisingly, this was seen by government officials as a time-saving measure when in fact it added an extra hour to the overall trip. The train would switch to the NEC Line and head Northwest towards Amherst and then Brattleboro. This operation continued for close to 20 years. The only switch is at Springfield where the train pulls into the station and backs up onto the CT River Line (the old Montrealer route).

Is it crucial to be in the right seat for real on Amtrak, like in booking terms?
It seems there really strict on where you sit in amfleets after getting your E-Tickets.
