It's definitely possible for the events in this story to happen. While I can't be sure if it is true or not; I can at least give a hypothesis as to how one who was born deaf could suddenly be able to hear. It seems likely that the cause of his deafness was underdevelopment in his auditory system; which eventually caught up with the rest of him when he got a bit older. It could have been something as simple as an unestablished connection from the brain to the ears. It would definitely come across to most like a miracle.
