Indy falling asleep on the boat was, and still is, my favourite character moment. An everyman cast into the role of a hero, a non-athlete (just look at how he moves) forced into feats of incredible effort, fighting to the brink of exhaustion, beaten, bruised, and just utterly shattered, being asked for one more feat, but in a safe space now... and he just cant go any more.
The fighting scenes are excellent. They’re stylized for the period of time the movie was set in. It’s an adventure. Movie from 1936.

What Biss fails to realize, is that the big German mechanic, is toying with Indy...He sees him as no threat...He didnt just charge in there and start laying into him...He was playing .. It was sport to him.... - Biss complains 'Its like - they hit and then they wait'...From Indy's side,.a smaller guy up against this big guy..will choose his strikes very carefully and then back off...Pat Roach is a wrestler after all...Indy wants to avoid grappling with him or its all over...This scene is actually quite realistic in that sense...Even if you watched some UFC fights ..they play out in a similar way...at this similar pace, of sizing each other up.....Unfortunately Biss couldnt relate to this, because the characters weren't wearing spandex outfits, and firing super powers out of their hands

And most of all, I would say that almost none of the current movies have any realistic fighting scenes, assuming that you know (or experiences) a brutal real life scenarios. After all, this is just a movie industry. All about camera angles, repetitions, preparations, and not hitting each other in front of the camera - and most of all entertainment (and I get that, and I agree with it). Plenty of movie bloopers (fighting scenes) on youtube too - to see how it is done.
But it has nothing to do with a real life approach. Just pure entertainment.
It is just now, people have pretty un-realistic aproach to any fighting scenes, all based on movies of course. Nothing wrong with it as such.
But movies vs real life? Nah... Not even close.
The movie came out in 1981. It's set in 1936, when the nazis were in power and three years before the beginning of World War II.
I'm 48 and it's impossible to overstate how incredible it was to be immersed in all these Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and other films at the time. They were doing one amazing film after another, and almost defined out childhoods. And then VHS (and Betamax) video recorders arrived and we could finally start watching them in our homes over and over again, still as kids, and then early computer games were growing massively so we could relive them again through those. (The Atari 2600 game of Raiders Of The Lost Ark was VERY obscure though!) Doing things that our parents couldn't have done 10 years earlier. Amazing times.
I still remember the Atari 2600 version of the map room. Brings back memories.
Ya I mostly grew up in the 70s and my experience was much more like the kids in the 60s than the 80s. Now that being said my buddy got one of the first Commodore 64s and we were teaching ourselves to program, pretty exciting stuff at the time.

No, can't agree, the fighting scenes are not bad. They're played the way they are for heroic and/or comedic effect. You 'sell' the shot by being staggered by it. These movies (and Star Wars, for that matter) were an homage to the 40s and 50s era movie serials that George Lucas grew up with. It's not bad, it's just an older style. 40s/50s style channeled through 80s production values.
Just because you grew up with something doesn’t make it good… an homage to silent movies would not come off well today. And Biss has every right to react without being corrected.

Perspective and context are important, friend. Not every movie is for every person, no issues with that at all, but the vast weight of popular and critical opinion is in favour of the movie. Doesn't mean any one person has to enjoy it, but understanding why people do and not just dismissing it as 'nostalgia' is important.

Many comments not just yours tend towards this direction. Her Alien reaction got hate. Her Exorcist got hate. Etc. and all from the same people. Older viewers telling her what she missed or worse. It is becoming a pass time to critique her reaction instead of enjoying it. And the fights are bad to todays standards. But I respect your opinion. As you should respect hers.

Yes, Harrison Ford played Han Solo in the Star Wars films. Also, the other actor you where wondering about (The one that was helping him in Egypt), was in the Lord of the Rings films. He played Gimli, the Dwarf.
AND Treebeard, although that took more than just makeup and size stand-ins.
John Rhys-Davies. That guy played in so many things over the years (many known games to) that i don't believe that he must have stayed much time in his own house or with his family.
He also played Leonardo Da Vinci on the
Holodeck in Star Trek Voyager, and a werewolf in "Waxwork" (1988).

Hi Bisscute! The thing about this movie is it was made with the old serial movies in mind. Spielberg and Lucas dreamed of this character and wanted him exactly old style when every man stuck to his fists when fighting and use you mind as a weapon. It's nostalgic. I grew up watching Indiana Jones, James Bond, John Wayne, etc... it was GREAT!!! I still wish I had a bullwhip and Whoosh, make it up as I go along 😂

It's aged perfectly. This movie style was an homage to the 1930's serials they played at the theaters in America. Those were made for kids. Instead of fussing, it's just easier to give you a thumbs down on this one.

I was 30 when this movie came out, and it was the best action/adventure movie I had ever seen! From the beginning there was action scene after action scene, and that was new. To me, anyways. It was exciting, to no end. Raiders of the Lost Ark was the start of the Indiana Jones series, and I liked every one of them. Even having seen it lots of times, I still enjoy it. My memories are chock full of lesser movies, so this one stood out! For those of us who are fans, you have to remember the time Raiders appeared in. Video games just barely starting to come out, no cell phones for everyone, no movies made with the vast array of computer assistance to the extent that is used now. It all depends on what you're used to. And for me, this was 'way beyond what I was used to! Thanks for watching, and the reaction!
It's a historically significant movie, in that it broke records and is a great mix of nostalgia for old Hollywood adventure films, etc, which is probably more important to American audiences or Hollywood fans from other countries, but it definitely hasn't aged perfectly (even though it's set in 1936 and things were different then anyway). But it was very popular when it debuted. It is very much a popcorn movie, and has been the blueprint for movies of its kind ever since. And yes, Indy was played by Harrison Ford (Han Solo in Star Wars).
I saw it in the cinema when 6 years old, and the end screaming melting people scene scared me so much my Dad had to take me out of the movie before it ended...lol.
My babysitter took me to see JAWS (with some of her friends) when I was three... Try that these days. lol
This film was in my local theater for over a year, so yes, quite popular.

Yep, that’s how real fights work. Seriously watch the UFC and you’ll realize that’s exactly what a real fight looks like. You throw a strike or two at your opponent to see what works and then you back off and take time to size them up and come up with a new strategy. It’s literally the core concept of a fistfight, but everybody watching movies has been brainwashed by all these stunt flights, which are basically just dancing with each other, and would never functionally work in a real world combat scenario.
The kissing scene is simply a testament to a time when flirting was an art form. Relationships between the sexes had plenty of subtext and undertones, and the boundaries of what could be allowed were dictated by intuition, good manners, and most importantly the women. Women could define these boundaries quite freely through various signals, and men were quite adept at picking up on them. Against this background, today's norms are downright puritanical. Very verbal and risk-free, but also devoid of any imaginativeness.
In this particular situation, Marion just wants to express her gratitude in some tangible way. Sallah's reaction says it all - he knows perfectly well that this is a one-time highlight but he can enjoy this unexpected gesture.
The goofy, bigger than life style of this movie is very deliberate. It is based upon the old serial films they used to show before the main feature that were part of George Lucas' childhood. They were kind of like comic book style, filled with cliffhangers and action/adventure.

When this movie came out I was 12. This movie was playing at different theaters around town for what seems like a year. During summer vacation it played in the bargain theater that was just a few miles up the road from home. I saw it probably 30 times over the summer, it only cost a dollar to see. The soundtrack and dialogue is ingrained 😅
1981. :) I saw this movie with my Dad in the Theatre. We both loved it. It reminded him of the movie serials he grew up with.
One of the best movies ever and one of the most fun to watch over and over. I saw it in the theater originally when it first came out and now some 40+ years later I'm going to go see it again in the theatre in 3 days and I can't wait. Keep smiling👍🙂

Bisscute, I think they fight scenes were going for more "fun and adventure" then realistic. Not a lot of fight scenes were over choregraphed back then.
My nephew who is 12 watched this with his class in school and they all loved it.
About the kissing:
In much of western literature, when the hero rescues the damsel in distress, his reward is a kiss.
Sallah saved Indy's life, helped him repeatedly, and was an all around good friend to Indy.
Marion gave him his reward: a friendly kiss on the cheek for his kids, another for his wife (reminding him that they both know he's married), and then a much sweeter reward on the lips for him.
She was showing gratitude for his heroic efforts to help them, and true affection for him.
It was a kind, sweet, heartfelt moment of appreciation and affection with no hint of romance.
They both knew what it meant.
And it worked.
Judging by how he burst into song, he felt that his reward was well received.
It may have worked at the time, but by today's standards that final kiss on the lips is weird and cringe. If some guy tried to kiss me on the cheek, fine. Maybe awkward, but acceptable. If some guy tried to kiss me on the lips, that's crossing a boundary and I'm ducking away from that shit. A scene that didn't age well. Different times.
Agree to disagree, and if your lover's friend tried to kiss you, even as chastely as that (given the gender reversal you have ascribed to it) on a night out at the bar, then perhaps you may cringe.
But if my lover's overseas friend had assisted my lover professionally in achieving his unlikely, near impossible goal through his contacts intelligence, and local knowledge, and then risked his own life, in a personal capacity on several occasions _against a battalion of Nazis_ before securing me and my lover safe passage, and my lover was stood next to expressing (in his stoic, masculine way) a bond of everlasting friendship, I too, may have given him a tender, chaste, platonic kiss on the lips. And all three of us, weary, experienced, cynics that we are, would have known exactly what, and how much, it meant.
One of the most adult moments in the whole series, in my opinion.
It's a solid film for me. in the 4 star range. Mostly because I am a Harrison Ford fan.
Big Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg fan, so this is one of my favorite movies.
The seaplane at the beginning has the call letters OB-CPO on the tail and the images of R2-D2 and C-3PO appear in the hieroglyphs on a wall in the Well of Souls.
In the scene where Indy shoots the swordsman, the original script called for a long fight but Harrison Ford, as well as the rest of the cast and crew had dysentery and couldn’t stand for more than a few minutes at a time. They tried to film a fight scene, but couldn’t make it work, so they decided to just have Indy shoot him.
The Temple of Doom, in my opinion is the worst of the four, though some people like it. The Last Crusade is as good as this one, plus it has Sean Connery. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gets a lot of hate, but it’s not that bad, even though it costars Shia LeBeouf.
Some other Harrison Ford movies I’d recommend are Blade Runner, The Fugitive, and Air Force One. For a comedy, try Sabrina, Hollywood Homicide, or Six Days, Seven Nights.
Harrison was sick the day they were supposed to film the fight scene so he just suggested Indy shoot the guy.
Have to disagree with your opinion this movie is pure escapism with a good dose of humour.
it is fitting that you recognize that "raiders" has a lot of nostalgic appeal for today's viewers, who watched it as kids, because spielberg and lucas created this movie as a nostalgic homage to the bygone adventure films that they themselves watched as kids.
Its not just the movie and sfx that you have to consider when judging older movies. You will never appreciate now how the cinema was a special event and movies were not on an endless stream. There was a lot of anticipation and savouring the moment. Also you have to remember what were we exposed to not only at the time but also in the years before. Treasure island books were still in our recent memory at this stage so this movie recalled all of the excitement from those. There is a lot of factors to consider. So as a teen boy this was a part of our growing up. We are reminiscing about the years of no computers or cell phones 3 channels on tv and riding bikes around the neighbourhood and our first girlfriend and a stage of life also when we remember the movie. That is why people still love it. Its not just a movie.
Thanks for keeping it real and giving us your honest opinion. Back in the day, the effects were pretty good. If you want to go into movies without knowing the actors, the story, whatever, I respect that. You might want to at least know when the movie was made for the context of special effects and what not. :)
Still one of my favorites of all time. A good blend of action, adventure and comedy.. But I appreciate your honesty and opinion. I will admit that the romance/kissing is rather cringe by today's standards, but it is somewhat typical of movies from the period.

This island is in Brazil off the coast of São Paulo, it has restricted access because there are around 15,000 snakes on a small island, which makes it very easy to find snakes. The name of the island is Ilha da Queimada Grande

Glad you got some enjoyment out of Raiders. It's one of my favourites, but no one should get mad if you didn't like it too much overall. I hope you'll continue with the series sometime, though to be honest they're all quite similar in tone (#3 is generally considered the best).
It is rather striking that youtube reactors who are really into music and movies have never previously seen or heard any very well known movies or music.
The meaning of that kissing scene is simple. He saved them and she was thankful. The kids on the lips was not intended in a sexual or romantic way.

Films never age at all. They remain the same forever. It is our perceptions of the film that change over time.
Younger people see older films differently, as they never grew up with the debut of action-adventure films such as this one. Film franchises like Indiana Jones and Star Wars were magical in the past, but today, they can be seen as campy and antiquated. It's all about people's perceptions.
Personally, I loved Raiders of The Lost Ark when it came out, and I still see it as great in its own way. I've moved past the over-the-top stunts and fight scenes that were featured in the Indiana Jones films, but I still have great memories of those films.

Replaced? I'd say supplemented. As an aficionado of both, I see storytelling media divided into four categories: film and video (picture and sound), written literature (no picture, no sound), song and spoken word (sound, no picture), and comics (picture, no sound). They all coexist, no one replacing another. You can tell the same story in all four categories, but the strengths and limitations of each mean that it must be told a bit differently.

The fact that most people (not all and especially not aficionados) are more familiar with Disney versions than actual literature. When one supersedes another I consider it as replaced.
I would not watch a Disney version of The Count of Monte Cristo as a supplement to the Dumas work. By definition a supplement adds to.....this is not the case.

That´s why I like this channel. You don´t have to like classics just because of general opinion. Invoicing own opinion that is not popular takes gutts and this is why Biss is one the best reactors.
100% correct. I absolutely think every reactor should give an honest opinion - even though some viewers might get mad about it. That's their issue. How stupid do you have to be to get mad and hate on someone just because he/she has a different taste about something as unimportant as a movie (or a song, or whatever)?
And I don't agree with Biss quite often myself, esp. when it comes to older movies. This "for it's time..." and "compared to recent stuff" mindset is nothing I can really relate to. Today everything is, fast, flashy, tons of CGI, but IMO that doesn't make a movie better. When I was Biss age, I enjoyed a lot of movies that where made well before I was born.
But than again, different times, there was not the media overdose we get these days. And tastes are just different. I really like to hear different opinions, different point of view. And that's one thing I like about Biss. She gives her honest opinion, and she is always respectful - and besides very entertaining. What more can you ask from a reaction?

some just don't translate as well to modern audiences
(teen beach movies, elvis movies, 60's comedies leave me cold)

To get a sense of why this movie was filmed the way it was, it helps to understand the films that may have inspired it, such as swashbuckling films starring Errol Flynn, Ray Harryhausen films, and cowboy movies.
If you would like another film from the early 80s, I'd suggest 'Flash Gordon'.

If you're talking about speed, vehicles couldn't go very fast back in the '30s. If you're talking about degrees/angle, because they're trying to get to Cairo where the Germans have access to more military vehicles/ships at their disposal.

Indy falling asleep while he’s being kissed is not surprising. One of my early loves was so impassionate at a certain romantic act that I started to fall asleep. 😂
I think it is safe to say it was not a reflection of Indy's virility. Just sheer exhaustion from the previous 24 hours of non-stop adrenaline and beatings. I used to basically pass out when I got back from extremely rigorous, all-day hikes. The minute you lay down it's lights out!

You didn't have to worry about Marian crying in this movie. She's tough as nails. It's one of the things I love about this film.

Yes, Harrison Ford was Han Solo in the Star Wars movies. He also played Bob Falfa in American Graffiti, Martin Stett in The Conversation, Colonel Lucas in Apocalypse Now, Deckard in Blade Runner, John Book in Witness, Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive,, and Branch Rickey in 42. You would do well to react to any of these.
Belloq may be a Nazi collaborator, but his biggest sin is terrible taste in women's clothes.
In real life, most fights end up with grappling on the ground, but that doesn't make for good cinema.
There was an episode of the sitcom The Big Bang Theory in which a character pointed out that nothing Indy does in this movie has any effect on the final outcome. God would have killed the Nazis with or without Jones. Some people insist that this is a fatal flaw in the story. IMO, it's nonsense. Not every movie has to have a story where the protagonist saves the day. That God is more powerful than all of them is a legitimate way of resolving things. In any case, this movie is intended to be entertainment, at which it succeeds very well.
And don't forget that Ford was in the Western comedy "The Frisco Kid" with Gene Wilder (Willie Wonka, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles). That's a movie that deserves a lot more attention.
Willie in Temple Of Doom is so much hotter and so much fun. Karen Allen is boring to look at. A blah. Never had hots for her. Just like Harrison never found her hot, according to an interview he did with a Karen Allen superfan. Him and I both Great men think alike. 👍👍

If you want to learn why Indy has a fear of snakes, watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He wasn't always afraid of them. This movie also fills in other parts of his back story, all the way down to the scar on his chin.
It's ok that you don't understand why this was such an excellent movie. There's a lot of cultural and historical influence that makes it so, and you may not have the life experiences yet to appreciate those. Given time, I expect you will come back to this later in life and be able to appreciate it more.

Fair enough, there's no wrong answers if you don't care for it. The fights however are realistic rather than stylized as in a lot of contemporary films. I dare say in another 40 years this one will continue to have aged better than a lot of films today that will be long forgotten, but maybe that's just because I grew up with Indiana Jones!

I don't understand the hate for the fight scene. Not every movie is a Marvel movie, and Indiana Jones is not a superhero. He's just a guy, and he was up against a gigantic Nazi who staggered him with one punch. The huge guy was clearly a boxer, not some MMA fighter, and what's more, he was toying with Indy. That's why it wasn't some action-filled mega fight.
It seemed like you were having a great time watching the movie, so it surprised me that you didn't rate it higher. I guess I can understand today's kids not liking it as much as I do, since everything these days is an action-packed special effects extravaganza, but this has always been considered one of the best movies of all time.
This movie is in my top 10 of all time.

Hi Miss Biss, I understand your review.🙂Probably due to this fim being based on the 30s and 40s serials you didn't find it that interesting. Keep in mind even though the film was made in 1981, it takes place in the 1940s. I believe that style fighting was typical of the serials as well, which you probably found comical. There is a rather obscure combination joke in the Cairo fight scene; to get it, you would need to know the history of Egypt as well as the history of American film. Indy’s assailants all wore black turbans, a headgear restricted to members of the Egyptian Orthodox, or Coptic church. They rush around with great enthusiasm but fail to accomplish anything because they are constantly running over and into each other, similar to a slapstick troupe from 1912 onward called the Keystone Kops (a “cop” is an American policeman). Therefore, in the Cairo street fight, Indy was attacked by the Keystone Copts.

The Sword/Gunfight was not scripted. Harrison Ford (Jones) was sick and while filming the scene pulled his prop gun. They decided to run with the idea.

Snakes have a personality like a dog. I wold come home from work. I would turn on the light and she would come out of her home. I'd put my arm in the cage and she would just move onto it and I would just sit watching movies with her wrapped around my arm.
Great honest review. I think you are correct. People of MY generation will "GET" more of the tongue in cheek comedy and references in this movie that were contemporary to times we lived thru. This was a fantastic family adventure movie in 1981, and I think it did age well, but not well enough to be rated at the top of a contemporary scale. A lot of the class, and inside jokes of the time are lost on more worldly less innocent youth of today. This was always a campy family film, but a lovable one with some great scenes. I will always enjoy rewatching it, but I appreciate the honesty and have to concede that this was made for a more innocent and sensitive world, and probably does seem dated in the comedy and effects to the generations watching it today. For those who do like to watch a lot of older films, they might get a lot more of it than those raised on Marvel Comics movies and brutally graphic thrillers. But to much of the rest of todays folks, much of the charm will be lost.
I would agree with most of what you said. But arguing the other way around is possible also. that is. Applying all of that to more recent movies. It is probably a polemic opinion, but here it is nonetheless.
For example, to me most "modern" movies and stuff are pretty naïve and rough in term of story or acting. That doesn't mean that they aren't good. Naïve and rough are part of some excellent movies. And that doesn't mean that they won't appeal to latter generations. In predicting that kind of thing, context is all important.
A good example are the Marvel movies. They are commercially trendy and appealing to a wide public (principally a younger one). But to me, It is difficult to find something more cringe and i believe that they are good example of movies that certainly won't age very well. They are more clownlike and soapy than violent and the writing level is mainly aimed at producing fast food stories. Possibly, only the first few movies in that universe and some exceptions may have more stay in the long run.

When Lucas first pitched Spielberg to help him direct this movie, Spielberg said he wanted to shoot it "like a B-film", because it was an homage to action movie serials from the '30s and '40s which were also filmed in this manner. This carried over to the rest of the sequels.
(This might seem surprising, even to my generation, since Indiana Jones, Terminator, Star Wars are all considered some of the best action film series, of both the '80s and film history. But all those film directors-Lucas, Spielberg, Cameron, Coppola-were all friends and, in spite of the high production values, many of their iconic film series and action movies were filmed in similar ways.)
Personally, this is one of my favorite film franchises. In terms of overall quality, I'd rank them from best-to-worst as 3, 1, 2, 4. But 1 is probably my favorite. And while I think 3 is a better story and film overall, I really enjoy the setpieces and action of 2, possibly the most of them all, since it rarely lets up.
I don't actually enjoy watching Jurassic Park that much. It only has 2 things going for it: the initial spectacle of dinosaurs like you're really seeing them (Spielberg's directorial skill), and the arc point of messing with nature and it going out of control (Michael Crichton's Theme-Park-Out-of-Control) and the latter gets a little boring 'cause they keep doing it. I don't think I ever even watched JP3, let alone the newest series. Whereas I'll generally watch any of the first 3 Indiana Jones any time.
