Photographing A SpaceX Rocket Launch

  • On this week's Landscape Photography vlog...my son I drove from our house in Boca Raton, Florida two hours north to Melbourne Beach, Florida for our first attempt at photographing a SpaceX Rocket launch. This launch was the Crew-2 Mission, taking four astronauts from three different countries to the International Space Station, where they will stay of the next six months.
There were several issues to overcome in making this video and still images...how to vlog from a pitch black beach, how to focus the camera in the dark, stiff winds straight off the ocean were causing a lot of sea spray on the lens, camera shake from the wind, and not knowing exactly where the rocket would be launching from since this was out first attempt at photographing a launch at night.
Only two photos were taken from this launch, but I was pretty happy with the way they both turned out. It was a spectacular launch and now a fantastic memory for both Brennan and I.
I hope you enjoy the video and the still images. Please hit the like button, leave a comment, and subscribe to my channel if you like what you saw!

Oh wow, I’ve never been so anxious watching a vlog before haha! 😄 What a challenge but you absolutely nailed it Paul! The guy watching it really works too - he tells the story of being there to watch it - lucky he didn’t move much! That’s so exciting, well done on an awesome shot!

Thanks so much Lisa! Yeah, it definitely was a challenge. The beach there is much darker than the beaches where I live so that was the hard part, even with flashlights and headlamps. There are about a dozen launches coming over the spring and summer so now that I have a bit of a feel for what I am doing,.would love to give it another shot! And I agree, the guy (that I initially cussed out) really added to the image. I was surprised how little he moved too over 158 seconds 😂 Glad you enjoyed it, it was definitely an amazing experience, even a bit emotional. Hope you are doing well, keep safe down there!

Thanks for that pal! Glad you liked it. Yeah when I think back about the drive up there, I was studying the curvature of the map and some other things (local landmarks) and none of that made a difference in the pitch black. Now that I know what I'm doing I hope to do even more. No less than a dozen launches this spring and summer. I'm trying to get JoAnna to drive up this weekend and scout out some other locations for future launches. If not, I'm going it alone. Glad you liked it brutha! But now that I have a feel for what I'm doing, I'm keen to give it another shot (we always think we can do better, right?). @paulcookphotography  Před 2 lety +1

Thanks so much Rebecca! No filter was used. It was pitch black on that beach. I can't exactly remember my settings without re-watching the video but they were approximately ISO 100, f9 to f11, camera set to bulb mode, and I was using a Sony release trigger so I didn't have to touch the camera (it was already windy enough). The light from the rocket was enough to illuminate the sky but there wasn't enough other lights to blow anything out, so no filter was needed. It was truly an amazing experience.msde even better by the photo that I captured! Thanks for watching, good luck next week, I hope this helps!

I am very curious, and a bit confused. I came across on google images, suntrail photography. These images are exactly like rocket launch images.
Have you ever tried this? Is it even possible? I know how to expose for the sun, just dont know. To be honest, it would take several hours to get the sun trail.
hmmm, i dont know if people are using rocket launch photos and calling them suntrails, or they really are sun trails.

I've never tried it personally, but they do look similar to rocket launch photos. Might have to do some more reading about it. I'm not really sure that's something I would be interested in.
