How do you watch a SPACEX ROCKET LAUNCH at Vandenberg SFB? 🚀

  • We camped as close as we could to a SpaceX Starlink rocket launch on the California coast. We want to share all the details on how to see a SpaceX launch in person and where we camped to be close to the launch site.
    There are several viewing locations to see a rocket launch from the Vandenberg Space Force Base, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. We share some of these sites and how we chose the site where we saw the rocket launch. Our campsite was 10 miles away from the launch pad and the viewing site we chose was only 3.8 miles away from the launch pad.
    We observed the SpaceX rocket launch that occurred on February 25, 2022 from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, CA. It was sending 50 new Starlink satellites up into low orbit. Even though we returned our Starlink (see previous video on why), we are still fans of Starlink and hopeful that a model that will suit our needs will be available in the near future.

    We live in lom-poke… and we can see these from our upstairs bedroom windows extremely good. They usually shake the windows and sliders, dogs barking….. and then comes the sonic boom for the booster re-entry!!! BOOM!!! Sometimes late, late at night or very early in the morning. Always a pretty cool experience. Glad you all enjoyed the launch.

    Lompoc [Lom-poke] is how the locals pronounce the name
    I see on your phone it will be slc 4-E Space-X slc4 is closest to W. Ocean Ave and if Surf beach is open is the closest
    I drove the trash truck at 7:50 and I see the closure of W. Ocean Ave to Surf Beach but where you are is all you can hope for

      Wow, so lucky. I've heard that sunrise and sunset launches are the most beautiful to watch. Wish we were able to get back down there! :) My advice would just be the standard "get there early" since the best spots do tend to fill up fast. I would still recommend the area where we watched -- right along Ocean Ave, close to where they close it off, but beyond the tall trees, just beyond the separated median. • @chrisbryan75
    @chrisbryan75 Před 2 lety

    Great video guys. I definitely would love to experience that some day.
    I’m not sure if this is what you meant by big white building but I found this explanation on Quora.
    The 4 towers around the launching pad are the "lightning suppression system."
    They are used to redirect lightning in the immediate area. This essentially creates a Faraday cage, shielding the rocket from being fried by lightning. Each tower is very tall, higher than the rocket & utility tower, and are more likely to be hit by lightning should it occur. The tube at the top of each tower is called the 'Candlestick,' and is insulated outside with stainless steel wiring run down through the inside, where it directs electricity from a lightning strike to the ground, sparing the rocket at the center of the launch pad. Each of the 4 towers are interconnected with thick wires running to ground cables, completing the 'Faraday cage'.

    • @HomeARoam
      @HomeARoam  Před 2 lety +1

      Nice! That makes sense considering what might happen if the rocket were stuck by lightning. Yeah, watching a rocket launch that close was a pretty unique experience. Hoping to be able to see one again some day. They happen a lot more frequently in Florida, but I'm not sure if you're able to get as close to the launchpad. There's also a launch site in Boca Chica, TX, but it seems to have even less frequent launches.
