@@robyncicciadnerpakennelgol6521 I'm sorry to hear that. It is sad to lease a beloved pet any time, but esp. when young.

Very nice to see a chessie work, especially a young one. I have had 4 over the past 44 years and Miss Ellie rose will probably be my last hunting dog.
Count you blessings that you have places to hunt where there are ducks. Around here duck and goose hunting is dying out. The C.O.Engineers does not manage for hunting anymore around the lake unless you want to fight the crowds at the 2 sub impountments, just recreational sport.

Unfortunately it seems to go in that direction all over the world, tha amount of birds in many areas are so spares. We are lucky to be able to hunt in natural habitats as well as on estates - but few have that posibility...

How's his temperament ? More strong headed ? Shows some protection instinct like the old dogs did ?

I´m really sorry that I haven´t seen your comment. She is a very soft but independent girl - and very clever - so yout cant do a lot of repetitions and need to thik ahead when training because she will do the thinking othervise ;)

Thanks for putting up this video. We are looking at getting a Chessy in the next couple of years. Our lab is a few years from retiring from waterfowling, so thinking about going with a Chessy next. I have my reservations about the, but your pup did great! How was the first couple years for training/socializing? How is she around other dogs? Do you hunt with other dogs?

This was our own bred and thus not our first. Forget most things you know about training dogs and expect a super attentive sponge that takes in everything you do, say and how you act. They are sensitive and tend to be training them selves from the moment you wake up. So I began working with them in short sessions since they were 6 weeks. Before they went to their new homes. As they are independent and hard working- your first task is to make them see the use of you. Arrange situations were they will ask you to help out. Help to lift up, to lift down, to carry them over. Because that is what they do, they try to figure out what they can do to help you! And they will try to make you laugh, be happy, be calm and peaceful. And you need to help them see when to stop work and that though it seems like a good sport and fun (you mustn’t laugh if you didn’t want a forever going repeat on that 😅). We hunt with up to 25 other dogs at the same time. So becoming comfortable with small spaces with you at home and further on with other dogs is a must. But we had 4 others while this one grew up - so that wasn’t hard. Her best friend was a spaniel and further on a flat coated retriever. It’s not that they have problems with other dogs, it’s more that if the other dogs make you uncomfortable or break your rules- they see it as their work to see to that. So most of the time I try to stay calm and say, that’s not your task - I will handle this. And never repeat anything more than twice ((because they probably understood that the first time 😂).
