Not gonna lie; chills every time, on that 'bring me'
And also; Julia Murney is the only one I can think of, who actually looks like Margaret Hamilton, in her costume/makeup :)

Her vibrato is so stunning. I honestly love the choice in "down", it's so unique and to me it sounds beautiful.
I honestly love this clip. Julia is literally everything here. The opt down is perfect. I agree 2000% percent with you!
That "bring me" was pretty stellar. Did not expect that.
I love her heavier tone, really makes me remember Idina as elphaba. She doesn't add shit tons of riffs and keeps the emotion in tact. She's amazingly and criminally underrated.
Her optioning down the, well, "Down" is much better than optioning up imo
"And nobody...in all of Oz"
The way she delivers this line perfectly encapsulates everything that elphaba is feeling in the moment. The fear of being alone, throwing away her chance to finally fit in and breaking away from ozian rule to fight for what she knows is right even though it will be a lonely existence. Not gonna lie i got misty-eyed and quiver-lipped.
my exact thoughts. chills.
Do y’all actually understand how hard it is to do what she did at 1:07? After this little break she hit the perfectly correct note in that “down”. Awesome performance!!
I always find it impressive how she literally came right back with a solid note and it was in tune!
The amount of hate she gets simply because her vibrato isn't considered "normal" is sad, her vocal skills mix perfectly with her acting and that's what makes her one of the best women in the role IMO. 🤷
Thank you. And add to it, hanging mid air, 30 feet over the stage, in a cherry picker that's probably wobbling back and forth several inches, and your have NO ability to hold onto anything or "ground" yourself with your feet. The amount of control and breath support needed to do that is insane. I think anyone woman who takes on the role is very brave.
It's not evident in this clip but watch Julia's hands and fingers in other clips on line of this and When I Meet the Wizard...she made intentional choices to always use them and display them in "scraggly and bent" manners as a nod to Margaret Hamilton...she was a great green girl. ANd I agree, her bring me down is unrivaled!
See, I knew it :) I knew there was a Hamilton (...as in Margaret, not... the founding father ;) ) vibe in her performance. Thank you so much for sharing. Trivia like that always helps.
@@livviebrundle You are welcome. This is "trivia" direct from the source. I have been a major fan of Julia's work before Wicked and I met her years after her run in Wicked I had a pretty long conversation with her about some of her specific choices in her roles, including the green girl.
@@kmf07302 really? wow. (I just meant trivia like 'little tidbits of useful info' ;) )
OMG
She takes acting trhough singing to a whole new level!!
Kendra’s “I hope you’re happy” is great here too
Julia is unrivaled! My first Elphaba in 2005. I met her right after the 15th anniversary performance and cried meeting her and yet she was SO gracious and gave me the biggest hug. (Of which I was not expecting) and she talked with me about her time in Wicked and her choices and how hard it was for her. She was SO humble and kind and made me feel like the only person there. She really is the total package!
I saw her one the tour and she was BRILLIANT. I'd already seen the show a few times, but she made it feel brand new.
My music teacher saw Julia Murney in Wicked. She said Defying Gravity made her want to cry. Now I know why. 😭
God this is good!! Theres such a feeling of fear loneliness in the way she says down. And the sheer POWER!? Chills. Brava.
Oh my she's incredible.
I don't like too much vibrato, but I love this video of her, I feel very real, you can see elphaba's anger, and a little fear for sayin NO to all of oz and that's why I like her "down", sound like a lament
I think the excessive vibrato actually works here because it shows how nervous she (the character) is.
Her choices are brilliant. I just love Julia! One of the best there is!
You ever have a moment where someone sings something so well you just want to slap them? lol that was me from "and nobody in all of oz" to the end of the song.
i would never hit someone
@@sheismymom its just a figure of speech
Feel better?
Is ever gonna brinnnnnnnngggggggggmeeeee...............downnnnnn!!!😍loved that
She is INCREDIBLE, there truly is no one like Julia.
Honestly how I envision Elphaba in the books, Julia Murney. 💚🖤
I was expecting trash. This is really good bro
Julia Murney will never be trash 😅
@@amazingstarzz I realize that but the title threw me off
I love the way Kendra delivers the pre flight lines before Elphaba flies, she actually sounds genuinely scared and anxious. She was a great Glinda!
I'm very confused about where the 'sad' part is. All I hear is power and perfection...
Perfect! Absolutely perfect!!
I love her "bring!!... me downN!!!!!!!!!!" in second bring me down
I love Julia. So good.
Chills… every single time!
Omg. I love it.
Wow! She was perfect!
Julia’s vibrato is 10/10 amazing. I think she was a LITTLE over the top with with her acting, but her vocals easily make up for it. One of my favs!
I definitely see what you mean about her looking like Margaret Hamilton.
I’m in shock
WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!? I LOVE IT WHEN BW ACTORS AND ACTRESSES CHANGE THE MELODIES IN THEIR SONGS!!!
I think they mean that that second "bring me down" sounds almost like a lament. And I think this is truly a brilliant choice because we often forget how heartbroken and scared Elphaba actually is at this point.
What is the timestamp where it is I am so confused She is amazing g
Do they have different hats for Elphaba? I could’ve sworn in Dancing Through Life the hat is straightened but in Defying Gravity the hat kinda gets curved, I also noticed some Elphaba’s have different hats (not referencing the size) but also appearance. Like, does she get a different hat in act 2 meaning she has like 3-4 hats?
I think they do. In some productions, the hat Galinda gives to Elphaba has black ornaments around it too, which are gone by the time Defying Gravity comes around.
They have one hat that is able to be “tossed around” and this hat doesn’t have a microphone in it. (This hat also has black flowers on it) Throughout the rest of the show she has straighter hat with no black flowers on it and a microphone pack inside of it. If you look closely you’ll see the microphone itself on the brim of the hat. There’s a video on YT somewhere where shoshana’s hat falls off while flying and you can’t hear her for a second. This is because the microphone on the hat was the “live mic” and once it fell off they had to switch to her mic under the wig.
She sings better than Idina just saying
yes
Most Elphabas do 😬
You could say this about 80% of elphabas 😂
I love Idina, she's a Queen, but she definitely isn't the best Elphaba out there.
i actually think she's the ONLY one worse than Idina lol. In general - Idina was probably vocally the worst elphaba there ever was
I don’t understand why the head voice??? 😂 I thought she was slaying this, her belts were healthy I guess those particular notes just felt like they weren’t there to her this day, so strange lol
She went through sinusitis.
WOW. Tbh I think this (sorry) objectively better than Idina…belting / screaming “down” actually never actually sounds good, just sounds like it hurts
I’m sorry but the vibrato gets on my nerves so much
Could not agree more. I don't know what ANYONE finds appealing about her voice. I think it's hideous lol
@@cloudambient it adds character, shows how nervous elphaba was... its not hideos by any means but if u wanna be a bitch about it go ahead I guess
@@alemobra5747YOU ATE THEIR ASS UP 😍
