NBA 2K21 Next-Gen: A Flawed Improvement - Review

- The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 release of NBA 2K21 is better than the previous generation version of the game on the PS4 and Xbox One. But it has some serious problems. That said, NBA 2K21 is easily the best sports game out there since anything made by EA is a whole lot worse and MLB the Show also has serious issues, but features less depth.
The inclusion of MyNBA, The City, The W, MyWNBA, and the insane increase in graphics result in a legit improvement. But is the game worth $70 when legacy issue still haunt the game, online competitive game modes like park and MyTeam are pay to win, and the servers are absolute trash? Probably not. There is a lot of good to be found in this game, however. Just wait until it's on sale to buy it.

I am VERY critical of 2K in this video. However, this game is still not as bad as popular opinion would lead you to believe. I stand by my opinion no matter how much hate I might get. It's my honest thoughts on the game.

I think your review is more than fair. NBA 2K has decent but very flawed gameplay that needs a lot of work. NBA 2K14 on PC is my go-to NBA 2K game.
My favorite present day sports series is MLB The Show and baseball is nowhere near my favorite sport. For me, The Show checks all the boxes on how a modern day sports title should be. Too bad it is only a PS4 exclusive because I think a lot more people need to play it.

I feel like the fact that My League finally got updated and they changed the way the builder works it finally made us offline players who can't afford Wi-Fi or don't want to play online to finally have fun with the game.

2k has the worst micro transactions there are. I don’t like madden, but if I avoid mut I can play it for free. If you want to play the major game mode of 2k, my career, you basically have to pay money constantly just to keep up. It’s a joke. I was apart of the joke for a while. But let’s not ignore what they are. The greediest company there. Worse than ea. But yes the game itself it obviously much much better.

The G-League thing was in 2K10 and 11. Also, back when college hoops was a thing you could play 4 years of college and import the player to the game. I'll concede the franchise innovations though. Other than that nothing is innovative in this game. They definitely added commentary as well. Ironically they made most of the improvements and actual innovation to offline experience 🤣.

@@badaxtion1878 back in 2K10 and 2K11 the mode was still called MyPlayer. Yes the D-League and G-League are the same thing during the 2017-18 season, Gatorade and the NBA made a huge sponsorship deal to rename the the D-League to the G-League.

The fact is, this is a year one version of a new gen or systems. This is an excellent launchpad for 2k moving forward. Like you said, they could’ve just packed it in and copy and pasted like EA did for madden and fifa. 6.5 is too low.
6.5 is fair. And they already did copy and paste. 2k21 for Xbox current gen is EXACTLY the same as 2k20. So why do they get props for not making the next gen 2k21 version a copy and paste? They already got over on people in September.

And I love franchise modes , you are right about nba 2k , it’s still got its flaws but it blows other games out the water in terms of stuff like that ! Softdrink, thanks for yet another brilliant and brutally honest review. You've mentioned it here and there, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the MLB the Show game series as a whole to this point.
Until MLB The Show can fix their broken UI and horrible batting mechanics, I’m perfectly fine with just owning 21 until those problems are fixed. Pitching is too easy, and batting is too hard.
Since I only play offline, I don’t have to worry about their problems with servers or micro transactions. I’d say I would enjoy this game heavily if I didn’t already own 2k20

Good review. 2K claiming they built this from the ground up seems like absolute BS when the game plays very similar to last gen with updated tweaks.
They probably copy pasted all the code from the last game so they could say that.
How is the "Start in Offseason" option for next gen? It's my favorite franchise mode because it lets us start in the summer right before the draft. Since this past offseason was out of whack due to Covid, I'm wondering if this game mode still allow us to draft Edwards, Ball, Wiseman, etc?

When you put the ball through the hoop does it register as a made basket, bc that would be a major improvement from 2k20.
2k21 on both gens definitely the best 2k since 2k16, which I played for 2 years. Had 2k17 but I didn't hardly play it at all. 2k18 was so bad that they had no choice but to go up...Each 2k after that was an improvement each year & now they've finally caught back up with 2k21. I think in 2k18 they focused so much on The Neighborhood that they forgot about everything else
Madden makes me appreciate 2k so much more. At least 2k cares enough to give us all-time teams and to make every player look like the real life version instead of just the stars

Dude you spoke facts and you did a great job on this video. I just bought this game on black Friday. I'm done playing MyTeam mode. I've always been a franchise/online type player, & I'm definitely looking forward to playing MyNBA mode. If I had more time to stream & create content I could probably build a small following on MyNBA mode. Ive got a creative concept and I'm the only one doing it. It feels good to be original. It's 2wks later but FIFA graphics are looking crisp. I didn't hear you talk about this game. I'm playing 2k, FIFA, The Show, Gran Turismo series, MXGP series.

The biggest issue is gameplay by far and there is just no skill involved in it at all
The issues you mentioned with gameplay, and how the CPU behaves in game, can be fixed with the right sliders and settings. Although, it's frustrating that it's not tuned correctly out of the box.

Another great video! Thank you! Waiting to actually get the PS5 before getting NBA 2K21. Although the PS4 version is currrently $19.99. Game looks amazing. I played the demo and I can't buy a bucket to save my life. In practice mode I hit 95% of my jumpers, in game, I miss almost everything. I did play with legends, maybe the difficulty is higher with legends, IDK. Hopfully I do better with the full version of the game. As a lover of all things sports, I can't wait to get into some NBA 2K21. Thanks again!

Well, it's been a year since Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order came out. Perhaps you could maybe make a retrospective or review on jedi fallen order, because I would like to hear your thoughts on it.
the biggest disapointment is that they didnt give us pc players this version. this game would not be hard to run on maxed out settings. as a myleague/mygm player i feel very left out and honestly kinda sad. basketball is my favorite sport and i love doing rebuilding challenges and other such things. lets hope that 2k22 is even better. im hoping for better wnba stuff too!

Dont listen to his review. I've played every NBA 2k since 2k14. This one is one of the worst. Thete is next to no story. College is boring. The draft has you go at the same spot no matter what. You pick your team. Which takes the fun out of being drafted. It's bad.
Don't listen to that guy, this game may have flaws, but it's MOST DEFINITELY fun once certain issues are fixed. A lot of people expectations be too high and they're quick to call it trash when in reality it's a great game. I won't say it's worth $70 but it is a completely new game compared to current gen; other than specific things in mycareer of course.

My career mode from current gen to next gen is the exact same. I wont ruin the "story" incase they buy it. But I mean there is no story really. It's a few cut scenes and its corny. There are really no interviews, no post game cut scenes. Nothing. And they removed the combined from last years game. Its pre determined what draft pick you are... literally nothing good about it.

You realize 90% of the mynba stuff has been around for years, nothing has changed except for removing teams, and boom/bust.
There is ALOT of small stuff in Mynba simulation and gameplay that are very small details but are pretty good

As a primarily MyCareer player, i'm thankful they allowed us to create the players we truly wanted to create. Got so tired of creating 1 or 2 dimensional players.

Quick question, How did you get the camera turned to the behind or 2k view while playing in rookieville? I still have it stuck on the stupid ass side view so it's makes playing those games such a chore and not fun at all.

I agree with the fact that the microtransactions really hurt the game. The gameplay is miles ahead of other sports games. The point being that if 2k is the best sports game on the market, it shows us that all other developers should be ashamed of themselves. The fact that they have millions of dollars and the quality is so low. The communities who follow any particular game is part of why that is. For example, Madden players bitch about how shitty the game is, but every year they continue to buy the game. So ea is never going to fix the game because people still buy it. If the community quit buying it ea would make a change because they would be losing money. That's a lot of typing, my bad. It’s basically the same game with a few new touches. The problem about madden is that it used to have a deep franchise and went backwards while nba had a weak one but SLOWLY loves forward so by the time 2k got decent madden had fallen off so far that basic add insult excited us

I believe rookieville is a way for new players to play against people of their skill level without being demolished by a legend or being kept waiting for a game because most players don’t want to play with them

The only thing I might disagree with is the score. I would actually bump it up to 7.5 out of 10, simply based on the sheer amount of content available in a sports game.
Presentation is truly 2K's biggest strength, and I wholeheartedly agree that the majority of criticism is based on the online aspect of these games.
Offline career alone is worth the purchase. On a side note, I also agree that 2K's focus on microtransactions continues to be a huge problem.
The city is completely unnecessary, and only exists to push microtransactions. When 2K fails, it's almost ALWAYS because of decisions made on purpose.
This game could easily be the greatest sports game ever made if they actually wanted it to be.

You can play G league games (they were called D league at the time) back in 2k10 and 2k11. Even for both my career and the association.
