BelieveOnceAgain I was traveling in Hawaii (I'm from LA) and I met some people from Australia who told me that they rode kangaroos around but I kinda annoyed that they tried to pull that on me... From what I understand kangaroos are super aggressive and scary. Who'd ride them?! Unless you all are crazy or something... I don't know... Oh, I find it strange how we have different meanings for crisps, chips, and fries. For me an apple crisp is a dessert, chips are deep fried thinly sliced veggies (sometimes fruits), and fries are fried potatoes. Do you guys have apple crisp?

I'm American and I don't know anyone who thinks that Australians ride on kangaroos. I was surprised by how often that stereotype came up as an answer in this video. Never mind. My sister and brother-in-law have been to Australia and loved the people and the country. I want to go as soon as I can get the money. And Australians, please visit the U.S. You would be joyfully welcomed! (Well, at least by most people. All countries have their fair share of idiots. ;) )

jon doe So far this century America has:
      1. Started two illegal wars which have killed one million innocent people.
      2. Almost destroyed the world economy and sent most of the world into a long recession. Then did NOTHING whatsoever to prevent the same thing from happening again.
      3. Held prisoners indefinitely without charge.
      4. Tortured prisoners with the full permission of the President; making him a war criminal who should be in prison.
      5. Been caught spying on all of it's allies.
      6. Broken more international laws than ANY other nation by FAR.
      7. The highest percentage of drug addicts amongst it's population.
      8. Continues to be the only western nation which still executes people (and has executed innocent people).
      9. Killed hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent women and children through terrorist attacks in the Middle East.
      ----
The list goes on and on. And on. AND. ON. So... no, sorry, it's not just like everywhere else. The United States is EASILY the worst, most 'evil', most destructive country on the face of the planet and that's why the majority of people in the world hate America and can't wait to see the end of it.

I've never heard the "Aussies ride kangaroos" stereotype before. If some Aussie tried to tell me that, I would know he was pulling my leg instantly, as would many other Americans. But, at the same time it wouldn't shock me if a healthy amount of Americans actually believed it.
I think the main stereotype would be that the Outback is Australia i.e. you don't ride a kangaroo to school/work, but they do hop around in your backyard, etc. However, I'm from Texas & we deal with similar stereotypes. Most Americans who have never been to Texas before think that we all wear cowboy boots & hats and herd cattle all day. I know how different Texas, Dallas in particular, is from that nonsense, so it's very easy for me to believe that Australia is vastly different from the stereotype being attributed to you.

    • @WelcomeTo
      @WelcomeTo  Před 10 lety

This is a great comment! Yeah, not sure how so many people manage to believe the kangaroo thing aha (they can be quite dangerous to even get close to), but to be fair, though, the outback makes up most of Australia (spatially), and me even living near a city I've seen kangaroos hopping around plenty of times. But yeah A LOT of Australians live in cities and live a very similar lifestyle to that of an urban American style of living.

BelieveOnceAgain Yeah, I definitely believe that. I live in Dallas, Texas, and it's very metropolitan. But, there are a handful of places were you'll be driving by & look over your shoulder & see cattle just grazing.
At the same time, you might come to visit Dallas, Texas, for 3 months and never see any cattle or even anyone wearing cowboy boots or a cowboy hat. I imagine the same would be true for me if I came to visit Australia's metropolitan areas over that same time frame.

I lived in Australia for two years way out in the donga. If people knew you they were nice to you. If they didn't know they didn't bother you, and left you alone. The Australian men never made me feel uncomfortable, and never were perverted toward me. My neighbors were really nice people and got to know me and never had preconceived notions about Americans. My neighbors husband hired me to help him pack peoples houses and he was never inappropriate toward me!I have never thought Ausssies ride Kangaroos. The only thing I was afraid of was hearing about the snakes and spiders before I moved there, funny thing I never saw either one!

Australia is the only country on Earth that can talk crap about America without the Americans getting pissed off. Americans never make jokes about Australians, and wont laugh at a joke about Australia (except when the comedian making the joke is British. Then its ok to laugh.) If an Australian wants me to believe they ride Kangaroos, I wont argue even though I know they don't. If I want to shut down a conversation about Trump, I just ask "What do you Trump voters have against Australia?" and they always go silent. Americans hold no other people in higher regard than Australians. Two thumbs up and much respect from America.

William Mckenna, you're a legend! Good bloke! TeeTee Louky, I am an Aussie and I created an account just so I could tell you that you're the type of shit that gives Americans a bad reputation. Australia isn't a deserted island and are not politically or socially insignificant. Australia are a leading trading nation and have a significant donor of humanitarian aid. We have been allies with America since 1941. Did you not go to school, or is your brain damaged after you got shot by someone who easily acquired a gun in your country.
