In this video I restored an old Pipe Threader "Virax 62", Made in France.
Age:
- I guess it´s age to 50-60 years.
Restoring time:
- around 2 weeks
Facts:
- Focus was on an "antique finish". The main body still has it#s production marks, the zinc die cast ring has some imperfections, and the handle as well. Hope you like it!
- this is one of the older versions, you can recognize them by 2 knobs
- I wasn´t able to do a final test, because I couldn´t find any affordable, original cutting heads. Sorry! But i demonstrate how it works :-)
- restoration was about 2 weeks
Techniques/materials:
- Ring and knobs are made of non magnetic zinc die cast - I remade the knobs out of 7075 aircraft aluminum
- the Ring was left with some imperfections (especially the countersinks), because i didnt want to break this fragile, unique part.
- The main body was blued with hydrogen peroxide (3%), salt and white vinegar. By cooking in demineralized water, the metal turns black. You can repeat this process up to 10 times
- the bolts were cleaned, because they need to fit back into the main body, same for the ratcheting element (ring)
- the new countersunk screws were nickel plated
- you can cold blue zinc die cast with regular steel bluing agent
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!

And the name with the most likes is....'Rizzo' 🙂
Thanks for all of your comments
The new spaceship looking parts washer is the coolest washer I've seen so far. Loved the antique look you went for too!
I noticed that lovely new piece of kit too 👌☺️
Spectacular restoration !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nicely done restoration. I'd call that old grease "Time Tar"
Once again, perfection from you! Cheers from Minnesota.
Thanks a lot! Greets from Germany ✌️
This video just made me want threading pipes. Not that I ever threaded one, but man, 10/10 would thread.
Haha!
“Tool Cheese” - In watchmaking, the brownish crud of oils, dirt, & skin that builds up around lugs, casebacks, and bracelets is called “Arm Cheese”, so “Tool cheese” seems appropriate.
Also, if we were in Canada with Hand Tool Rescue, he might call it “vintage Nutella” 😂
🤣🤣🤣
@@misterpatina Glad you like it ☺. I used to be a computer tech, and our equivalent is “mouse crud” - what builds up on the bottom of the mouse (or on the old mouse ball rollers) is basically “Arm Cheese” as well. Thanks for all the great restorations
You and @mymechanics do the best restoration jobs in the business. Wow.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate!
Eine gute Restauration, mit so einem Gerät habe ich früher auch gearbeitet. Heute wird es kaum noch benutzt. Die Rohre werden mit Pressfittings aneinander gefügt und dann mit einer Akkupresszange verpresst.
Couldn’t stop smiling all way through the video. You did amazing work. Give your self a pat on the back. It looks unreal 😁
Call that grease Rizzo because it looks tough and dark as hell
Tough but tender.
@lynnea420 seems like youre the winner 🙂 if you want some stickers you can contact me via email (in the channel info) 🙂
Great vid. Knurling, I learn a new word.😃
It was indeed a great restoration. I like that cold blued surface of metal than painted ones.
Btw in Pakistan you can still find cutting heads for such threaders.
çalışma hayatımın yarıdan fazlası bu pafta türü ile geçti.benim için çok degerliydi.tertemiz yapmanız beni sevindirdi.teşekkürler.
I call it Greaselda, the stubborn Ex youre trying to get rid of.
Nice work as always 👍
Hahaha, that’s nice! Thank you so much !
I like the vintage look. It preserves the story told by the wear and tear, but makes the tool still look amazing.
Well done Sir 👏
Thanks!
Great job on the finish. Makes it look older. 👍🏻
Iam glad you like it!
You're becoming a real My Mechanics level restorer. Love your work bro
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate!
Everytime i watch these videos, it makes me want to go work in the shop for a bit on some of my old tools.
One word: fantastic! I loved that restoration. "Take me to Big Tony" made me spit out my wine! Thank you.
Haha! Glad you like it!
Absolutely incredible. I love it. ~Kevin
Thanks! Iam glad you like it!
Excellent job.
No need to comment on the restoration anymore, bcos we all know this is top notch, on par with my mechanics. But the camera works and shots man, its absolutely wholesome and really professional. 🤩
As always, excellent work! I also have such a ratchet pipe threader. It will be necessary to restore it. Thank you for your work and motivation.
Youre welcome :-)
Hooked on the Brothers !!!
A cleverly thought out and aesthetic restoration. Love the clever chemistry in making peracetic acid to get that tarnished antique look - a good choice.
Iam glad you enjoyed 🙂
Mister Patina and cold bluing. Name a more iconic duo.
Haha, thanks John!
Mal wieder tolle Arbeit 🎖️
Danke!
*I could watch you and also 'my mechanics' all day long... as it is so relaxing watching you doing this.*
Thanks! I really appreciate!
Grease Witherspoon there was so much you could remove it with a spoon 😂 nice work as always love watching your videos 👌🏻
Haha! That’s pretty creative!
The finish looks amazing 👍
That is a thing of beauty! Excellent work!!
Thanks!
Excellent restoration 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe🇨🇦
Thanks man, you’re welcome!
Another awesome tool restoration by Mr.P!!!!
When it's done that is one lovely looking pipe threader. I don't know much about that tool, but that looks really swish, good job.
Filiera M30 conosciuta anche come: *"Viè qua che te ce meno!"* Seriously, you can use that M30 threader in a fight 😁
Looks really nice. I preferer when doing an as close to original you can restoration, depending on how much you need to make new. Love how the zinc plate came out.
At first, I honestly didn't think that I would like the finish. When it got done, it looked great.
Iam glad you like it 🙂
The way you fixed this. It looks bloody fucking awesome. Keep it up mah dude. Happy to see these relics of tikes past being restored like this
Thanks, iam really glad you like my work!
I honestly didn't think I wasn't gonna like it but who am I kidding?! I like every video you have
Thanks :)
I recently visited the virax company. and it's impressive the tools they have and all the manufacturing process. It's really interesting
Looked like a fun project for you. 👍👍👍
It was :-)
ok I am TOTALLY GEEKING OUT over yur high pressure parts washer!! My jaw dropped. I was like "I want one and I don't even do restorations!!" (I am not getting one. Hubby would never let me so I will continue to geek out over yours). Woah! this blacking method is SUPER COOL. Would you judge the "correct amount of grease" the same way I've seen many wood workers judge wood glue? If you don't get a little "squeeze out" once you put it together, you probably didn't use enough?
It strikes me when I watch your vids how much of an art restoration is as much as it is a science. Your knowledge about not only current tools and methods, but those of the times whatever your restoring was made in shows in everything you do. I continue to watch not only because it's calming and cool to dee what you do, but because I learn so much. thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much Naiya! Yeah the pressure washer rocks - i clean mostly everything in it: dishes, my bike, the dog, and so on. Jokes aside - its really pretty cool :-)
In my opinion theres never enough grease, nor enough brake cleaner. In the end of the video while testing you can see grease pop out between the ring and the main body - while changing the ratcheting direction. I guess thats the answer..:-D
Thank you so much, I really apprecciate!
An excellent restoration yet still retaining the antique look. Thank you for sharing !
I was skeptical of the antique finish, but the result is outstanding.
Amigo mío siempre te esmeras en los detalles de tus trabajos, bien hecho 👍
SUPER GREAT! SUPER SWEET!
Thanks!
Nice new dishwasher
🤣🤣
Beautiful restoration!
Thanks!
Wow, man! you managed to create such a pretty tool. It is Brutal, Beautiful and vintage at th same time. You definetly caught the sipit of epoch with this tool. Bravo! Thank you!
Thanks man! I’m glad you like my work 🙂
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thanks!
The fat Tony comment made me smile 😊. Beautiful work as always, thank you 🙏
Haha, thank you!
Killer work!! It really looks great, your finish was perfect.
Thanks! Iam glad you enjoyed!
Stubborn gunky grease = GRUNK :)
I like it. Much more authentic than coating everything in body filler and painting it.
Iam glad you enjoyed
Excellent work. I used one of those almost daily threading black iron pipe when I worked HVAC.
Wow very nice!
Thanks!
Отличная рестоврация. просто браво.😊
Spasibo!
It was a relaxing restoration and I loved the aesthetics. The process of blackening the main part was awesome and was new to me.
Thanx Mister "P" ..
That Grease - Chew-Tabacco ♥
I would call that leftover grease "PLAQUE" like when you've had too many sausage biscuits your whole life and now you are getting roto-rooted by your cardiac surgeon. Another beautiful restoration!
Had to laugh hard here...:-D Thanks!
Nicely done. Cheers! S
Sir Crud of the Greasingtons. That's my name for the grease. It's so stubborn it deserves a title.
Haha, I like that a lot! Pretty creative!
Grease name: Restoragloppain. Lovely work and video.
Hah, thanks!
Brilliant restoration of the old pipe threader 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks Tom!
I could've used the younger cousin to that recently when rebuilding a hand-truck, but my largest crescent-wrench was just big enough to do the job. (threading the axle-stubs that originally had push-lock retaining washers)
Great antique finish, I love the look! Huh, that's a clever yet simple ratcheting design, I like it.
Thanks man!
You're welcome!
Now that looks beautiful. Great restoration!
Thanks!
Jolie travail
Rust blueing is my favorite. Very very durable. I use it on my axes
Beautiful work as always! ❤
Thanks Linda 🙂
Tous s'empilent vous êtes un géne❤😂🇩🇿

Wonderful finish product, nicely executed sir, thanks for the video, enjoyed it.
I really like that new "old" look!
Iam glad you do! 🙂
Lovely finish on that one mate
Perfect top show
Очень хорошая " трещеточка" - качественная и реставрация отличная , но вы забыли сделать стопорное кольцо , внутри восьмигранника есть бороздка под него . Оно нужно , чтобы не выпадала вставленная в него плашка ( клупп). 👋
Thanks for sharing. God bless you 🙏
Great video as always, nice little restoration.clean and smooth.attention to detail is always impressive.just keep doing what your doing.kudos 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thanks my friend! I will!
Love the finish! 😍 I vote for "Schmocke" also!! 😂
Hahaha, that’s my favorite 🤣🤣
Lovely work, and a gorgeous tool.
First time I've seen Mr. Patina deliberately add a patina.
Brilhante, otimo trabalho
Hi. A very good job, bro.
The finish is a perfect mixture of looking new and looking used.
The chemical treatment for the nice black color was very interesting, too.
Greetings and best regards !
PS: and have a nice weekend
Thanks man, iam glad you like it! I wish the same for you 🙂
Wow, just wow
Excellent restoration, and the Grease is called 'Sticks like s**t to a blanket'.😂😂😂
Haha, thanks my friend! 🙂
Great resto 👌. Love the bluing process
