I have a very personal interpretation of this song, don't know if it matches the original interpretation at all.
Starts with a typical life of quiet desperation, then at 2:12 that life's end, dying, then from 3:18 on deliverence. So life is the ordeal.

The importance of this song to Selling England's structure as a rock music album cannot be understated. Provides mental respite after being overwhelmed by Epping Forest and clears the brain for the 12 string intro to Cinema Show. Like a Greek chorus segueing between main acts. Whoever decided on sequencing it between the two deserved a raise. Cheers to Mike Rutherford for showing some muscle on insisting that Tony and Peter agree to keep it. If Mike said it was OK, it was OK. He's like six foot four with that doubleneck guitar.

I think it carried the mood of the record even further + I am a huge Steve Hackett fan there is a version of him and Roger. Keyboard virtuoso king doing this and it's majikal. Another example of Steve's vast knowledge of melody. Not sure why Tony didn't like this his playing is awesome on it.

One of the reasons is that he found his own playing on After The Ordeal to be poor. In the remastered version, the guitar is much more prominent than the keyboards. It is simply his opinion which was also shared by Peter Gabriel (although not as forcefully). Thankfully, the majority of the band disagreed and it is sequenced well on Selling England, nicely sandwiched between more epic tunes.
