The first time I heard this song I was 13 and I sat in my room and cried uncontrollably!!! I was in awe of how beautiful music could be. I'm 55 and this song still brings me to tears!!! Their best song ever!!!!!!
Me too.. same feeling great song
Naturalist First! Man, at the age of 13? Wow! That was 'super perception absorption reaction'! My first cryings were that to the Duke assortment of songs summer of 1994. Don't know why I was such a late comer!
It's a tug of war between- between that of Ripples, and as you had mentioned-your favourite, that being Mad Man Moon! That's astounding!
I relate to Ripples more in the sense that I'm up against the tide of animosity, opposition-namely that, yes, a jealous pool! A very and such jealous pool seemingly thwarting my love life continuously and relentlessly! Yes..., her thinking the world of me and I her..., the magic between us came to an end very shortly.
First composition of any sort that I sent to her believe it or not was Steve Hackett's Voyage of The Acolyte! That was August /September of 2021. The song that brings me back to the season a little prior to when we first met would be the animated version of Seven Stones! It was autumn!
Then Heathaze struck me after sitting at a park pic nic table seeing around me photographing the leaves having changed! That was the day after our fourth time meeting in person. The afternoon when the beauty of magical opportunity bloomed!
Being 55 as well..., she was 12 years younger than me. Our relationship only lasted 8 days in person! She gave upon me officially January 21, 2022. The one year Anniversary (...some Anniversary I tell ya.) of our magic is soon approaching three days from now!
Evidence of Autumn describes how I feel each and every day. Rarely a day where I don't cry profusely!
"And though the pain is dim
A something still remains
Though you hardly can recall
Her face or form
Her memory lingers on
Ooh she made everything feel right
She came in like an angel (in like an angel)
Into your lonely life (into your life)
And filling your world with light"
...and nobody told me I was 'oh so lucky'. For luck had nothing to do with it.
@Shabda Sound Awesome! One of my tearful favourites! Man, what a moving song!!!!!!
I'm 59 this album and "Then there were 3" was my adolescence on vinyl. Peace and much love from Detroit MI.
My favorite song by Genesis too! I'm glad I was introduced to this wonderful band by my parents! I grew up with a lot a of good music from the 70s and 80s thanks to them.
Most underrated. This Mad Man Moon is the most beautiful song I've heard in all my 63 year's life. There are others (few) as good or better, but not as beautiful.
Tony Banks is simply a genius! 🎹🎶♥️
I agree with you!!!! Tony Banks is the holy monster of prog rock! He's a genius!
One of the best songs ever written by anyone.
Agreed ... hands down, man.
I'll ALWAYS be A Fan Of GENESIS...With Peter or Without Him...The Band was EPIC ON A LARGE SCALE..
The most overlooked Genesis song and probably their best. It's just superb.
One of the best songs ever written.
Masterpiece.
The best.
Yeah if you like fairly tales and wizards - junk
@@chrispawl junk?you obviously don’t like great musicians
@@chrispawl Yes, I do like those things. Are you an "I Can't Dance" fan?
@@mr.brenman2132 Probably a Bon Jovi fan
Found Genesis in 1971 at the age of 16 and now at 68 I still love their music, the extraordinary talent that they all had. Witnessed them live five times, and will take those memories to my grave, along with Entangled being played.
I agree with you - Trick of the Tail has always been my favorite Genesis album, and Mad Man Moon, Entangled, Ripples and Squonk are my favorite songs from this album. Also have seen them at least 3 or 4 times and remember that the boys liked to play Squonk and Los Endos frequently in concert. And, honestly, I can't imagine these songs being sung by anyone who is not Phil.
This is my favorite Genesis album.
Phil' s singing is wonderful here. The tone, phrasing and dinamics. He goes from a piano note through crescendo to a forte one with drama. A beautiful song like this needs this aproach
Yes, he is wonderful here at interpreting his part.
Perfection
I've now been listening to this album for forty years, and it never gets old. This is such an incredible song. I suspect that if I live to be 90, I'll still be listening to it every few weeks.
Perhaps the deepest and most poetic lyrics Genesis ever wrote. I especially love the line, "I would welcome a horse's kick to send me back, if I could find a horse not made of sand."
Some of Tony's best work and Phil's best singing
phil?
A great piece of music!!
Phil's vocals on Trick of the Tail are really underrated. They are more theatrical and not shrill like 80s Phil.
I'd agree with that assessment. Some great drumming and definitely vocals. For me, it's between this album and 'And then there were three' for Phil's best vocal performance.
One of my favorite albums from Genesis.
This album still blows me away. Every song and the musical journey from start to finish with Collins at the helm at a point where most bands would have been done and buried and they come out with this album, this song. Complete genius
After the first minute of "Dance On A Volcano", it's "Peter Who?" You knew they were going to be just fine. And best of all, we got Peter's excellent first album that year as well.
Thank god they continued the band. They had a lot to give already! Phil emerged as lead vocals for a whole album for the first time when he only had recorded his voice just one track in SEBTP. Justice done. He was (is) a great singer and fit perfectly for Genesis.
Listen to Brand X !
Love hearing phil’s voice!!! He rocks!!!
Their best album by some way.
Absolutely beautiful Song! I love you Genesis!
My all time favorite Genesis song.
How it doesn't get enough recognition is beyond me.
It's absolutely perfect for a snowy night.
And mine too. Therefore, my all-time most beautiful song.
Second only to Ripples for me.
@@edlawn5481 Ripples is also bful, but Mad Man Moon I find quite more elaborated and musically rich.
@@Hammillian7 it's True!!
Good taste is a two-edged sword. You can appreciate what is great, but you are constantly surrounded by those who cannot.
🎶 An Excellent & Beautiful Song From The Best Band Of The World 🎶
🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🎼 🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🎼 🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🎼
I am so happy to see here so many Genesis’ fans! ❤️ I love your comments!
Never tire of hearing this absolute classic Genesis track. Banks and the boys at their very best. I love all kinds of music and try to keep up to date as best I can, but I always come back to Genesis.
I have bought a number of albums from newer bands, The Editors are one of my favourites. However, it's usually the older stuff l listen to more, the 70's were for me the greatest era for wonderful music, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Wishbone Ash, Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, Barclay James Harvest, Be Bop Deluxe, Steely Dan, Roxy Music etc etc 😉 The list could go on and on!
@@keithjones6023 ... you got that , brother !
We've gotten to listen from 50, 60s til now. But the 70s are the shit, man !
Phil’s voice entry is sublime, hats off.
A beautifully written commentary on not knowing how good you have something until you throw it away.
Melancholic and with depth. Phil sings so impressively and with so much warmth. A song for eternity!
This song is a reminder of the wonderful music this band produced. My Genesis albums are one my favourite possessions. This is one of their best songs post Peter Gabriel.
The mid section brings chills to me.
England...you slay me. Truly.
Tony at his best!! Pity there isn't a live version of this very nice song!
As pointed out in other comments, as a keyboard player I can tell you this would be damned near impossible to play live (even for Tony).
@@swankeepers They should have gotten Phil to play some of the keyboards... He could play a little
@@swankeepers The band always overlooked this and The Lamia, Steve eventually played the latter live after I kept pestering him to.
@@swankeepers Surely they could've hired a few extra live session players to fill it in? Oh well too late now I suppose :\
One of their finest songs
Was it summer when the river ran dry
Or was it just another dam
When the evil of a snowflake in June
Could still be a source of relief
O how I love you, I once cried long ago
But I was the one who decided to go
To search beyond the final crest
Though I'd heard it said just birds could dwell so high
So I pretended to have wings for my arms
And took off in the air
I flew to places which the clouds never see
Too close to the deserts of sand
Where a thousand mirages, the shepherds of lies
Forced me to land and take a disguise
I would welcome a horse's kick to send me back
If I could find a horse not made of sand
If this desert's all there'll ever be
Then tell me what becomes of me
A fall of rain
That must have been another of your dream
A dream of mad man moon
Hey man
I'm the sand man
And boy have I news for you
They're gonna throw you in goal
And you know they can't fail
'Cos sand is thicker than blood
But a prison in sand
Is a haven in hell
For a gaol can give you a goal
Goal can find you a role
On a muddy pitch in Newcastle
Where it rains so much
You can't wait for a touch
Of sun and sand, sun and sand
Within the valley of shadowless death
They pray for thunderclouds and rain
But to the multitude who stand in the rain
Heaven is where the sun shines
The grass will be greener till the stems turn to brown
And thoughts will fly higher till the earth brings them down
Forever caught in desert lands one has to learn
To disbelieve the sea
If this desert's all there'll ever be
Then tell me what becomes of me.
A fall of rain
That must have been another of your dreams
A dream of mad man moon
Grazie
A. True and sincere GENESIS Fan - GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER
Grazie mille!!
Thank you
Again- Love this so!
I'm 40 now and how come it's the first time I hear it? This album is SOOO magnificent! Genesis is certainly one of the most important bands EVER.
enjoy the journey, get some good headphones and even better weed, and welcome to Genesis. Start at the beginning.
I just need to get off my chest how much i love this band. No matter how bad my life gets, their music always makes me feel better. I will forever cherish Genesis
🎶 Mad Man Moon 🎶 Thanks Genesis For This Excellent, Awesome, Great &
Fantastic Masterpiece, You're The Best!!!!! GENESIS FOREVER!!!!!

Phil just nails this vocal performance. Not just the notes, but the way he accents certain sounds in the middle section, his enunciation, and most importantly the emotional heart of the whole thing. It’s all masterfully done.
Now take that vocal with those lyrics and put it on top of a piano-driven melody composed by a brilliant writer who’s got something to prove. The way the piano interplays with the keyboard chords, with Steve’s distant, ethereal guitar, with even the layered backing vocals - it’s all terrific. And then, in case you didn’t get the point by the end of the first chorus, an instrumental break featuring an array of tight percussion, reverberating bass, and a piano solo. Not a keyboard solo, mind, but an actual piano solo that then adds in keyboards partway through. The guys never played this live, and maybe that’s because Tony would need four arms to do it justice, because this whole section is just mesmerizing.
I prefer this to the "oversinging" Phil on the later albums.
IMO, the best Genesis song of post Gabriel era. And in the top 5 in the whole discography of Genesis. Absolute masterpiece with genious.
A perfect song from the best band ever.Amazing I love it🥰🥰🥰
Oh,how I love this album. Just beautiful music and Phil’s singing, brings me to tears, happy tears.
My lullaby...my very special place where I can pretend to have wings for my arms.
Perfect, inspiring, Made for the centuries. Thanks GENESIS.
One of the songs Phil moves into his faux cockney accent on this album. Robbery assault and battery is another. Superb album. In my top 3 Genesis albums, my personal favourite is selling England.
This is absolutely my favorite song from "Trick of the Tail"! Thank you for your enormous contributions to music Genesis!
Beautiful song. Listen on the second verse at 1:10 (left speaker) when Steve Hackett plays a wonderful accompanying solo. Always brings emotion to me.
Timeless classic 🥰
A couple months ago it was 3am and I couldn't sleep. I put this on and cried. That's when I realized classic prog was my life's destiny
Second best album next to the live album seconds out in my opinion. Its gonna be a genesis full day! Thank you genesis!
Genesis lives on......Awesome
Amazing song.
2021 Genesis and Phil still THE BEST in this world. Voice and music magical, remarkable, fabulous. A dream, I'm crying, it's super beautiful. A very very good album. Thanks for all.
Genesis at their best, great album, great album cover,my fav.God I miss the waiting and thrill of a new Genesis album.
this is the best chords progression that i've ever heard...
Masterpiece !
Beautiful song🥰
Thank you Tony Banks... and ofcourse everyone in Genesis, i have to say that Tony had a hard time playing this, that's one of the reasons why it wasn't done live, the itch of playing this one was satisfied by One for the Vine, a song that's probably the successor of this one and Firth of Fifth because of how they both play with the chords. Still, Mad Man Moon is one of my favorites, i remember reading a review of this album from an Argentinian website and they absolutely disliked this song, and i got Mad Man Moon because of that, but then i was glad because they had the whole album for me to listen to, this was before CZcams started uploading music in "good quality".
If even Tony Banks is scared of it, it must be very hard to play ... So they better go with Alien Afternoon. ^_^
@@sophieschollsreinkarnation5078 Well, that one is easier... i love seeing Tony play that song in the CAS tour videos because it really seems that he really enjoys to play that one and that motivates me to play it too lol
There are some complicated Arp 2600 overdubs 3/4 into the song. Maybe 3 or 4 layer + the piano + the little high notes in the end of that part. I love it. Maybe my Genesis-favorite. Could be played on my funeral, no problem. regards, Denmark.
@@peterthomsen4960 Regards... i have family in Denmark, i almost went there once, but the south american abyss is hard to escape.
One of the problems with Genesis live is that Tony has been quite protective of his keyboards, not letting anyone else to do even the smallest bit, which, if e.g. Phil wuold have got the chance, would have managed it perfectly. But, this is just speculation.
Wot a classic. Stuff like this makes you wonder how Tony would go writing an entire musical.
I want mad man moon in the set list of the upcoming tour. And I would like to see Genesis for the first time in Israel. Please come to Israel! No covid19 restrictions...
They’ve never played this song live and certainly wouldn’t start now.
@@Eleventhearlofmars probably, but let me dream
@@leonardosolmesky I’m with you.
Phil would have to get his "younger" vocal range back. At this point, it's impossible. And if they were to transpose it into a lower key, it just wouldn't sound the same, instrumentally as well as vocally. This album, and especially this song, is what really hooked me and turned me into a Genesis fan.
Authentic masterpiece.
Unfortunately, we might never see this beautiful composition live! Why? I don’t know! It’s just sad! Phil’s voice is so touchy along the wonderful harmony. Well, at least, they did record it!✌️
I know that some fan bands have tried... Steve Hackett i think too, but they all agree that this song is very very hard, that and One for the Vine.
One of my favorite Genesis songs. It’s a masterpiece.
Love this song.Love this album.
Saw this tour in the Montreal forum, Phil was playing drums along with Bruford. Images and sounds of that show are forever etched in my mind. Incredible concert from a truly exceptional band ❤
One of my favorite
Incredible, wonderful 😘 😘 😘 MY beloved Genesis ♥️♥️♥️!!!!!!!
The best....
Sensacional, Genesis 4ever!!!🎵🎵🎵🎵
Much LOVE to that synergy. So many years to prove it...
Music is so timeless I dedicated this song to a dear friend that didn't get to see this tour Bill Buford accompanied them on this tour and it was a magical masterpiece I threw in magical because of the album cover the script writing inside what a combination a collaboration that will go through the ages
One of my favorite Genesis songs.
64 and tony still makes my hair stand up
a master indeed i will listen to my last day
Beautiful song! Please keep them coming. ❤❤❤
a great song from my favorite Genesis album
Makes me smile....just incredible......!!!
Each friday i enter to youtube just to watch those Genesis and Pink Floyd uploads ✨
my two favorite bands. Both have beautiful compositions and a lot of it is thanks to their keyboardists
This song is masterpiece xx
Such a legendary band absolutely amazing thanku so much love and God bless x
My favorite post Gabriel album from the lads. Great song, great remaster. Cheers!
🎹🎶 Tony merci 😄
Found this song recently and fell in love almost instantly. One of my top 10 definetly.
Beautiful Thank You for sharing this Masterpiece 💝🌟💝
Great Song 🍀🍀🌞🌞💫💫
5:35 not sure why but that simple bass fill in gets me every time
Good day, good people 💜
My fave Genesis track & album!
Spine chilling beauty.
Cuántas noches me dormí con esta canción ...impresionantemente preciosa
Lucky us that have seen this, lucky youngster that learned such wonderfull music
This is an example of why I LOVE Genesis. Tony Banks, when he was composing stuff like this, used to play a synthesizer like a trained guitarist would a guitar: a device to make MUSIC with. As opposed to just creating minimalist soundscapes.
This is 7:35 of pure excellence 👍😎
A wonderful ballad. Thank you for the reminder, you sound amazing👌🥰
Masterpiece pure talent👏👏👏
Tony Banks is off the charts on this one. That middle section is epic.
This song can't more perfect. Excellence itself.
Massterpiece. Emotions at the top.
Beautiful song❤
I love England for many reasons - on top: GENESIS - Greetings from South Bavaria!
Splendido brano un opera darte grandi i genesis
Sempre fui fã deles como é bom escutar estás músicas maravilhosas muito show
The one where Steve plays a little bit then wanders off to write Please Don’t Touch...
So many perfectly touching songs on this album, brilliant stuff.
