I was 20 when my ears heard these guys for the first time. And it was this album. I’m pushing 64 and have traveled into many musical dimensions, and just yesterday something was telling me not to forget TOTT. I pulled it out after more than 20 years of not one listen.
I’m SOOOO glad I did. It’s like coming home after decades to old familiar friends family and place. Just with grey hair and more life experience. Ripples baby.
I am 38 years old. But when I listen to this Genesis album, I'm 13 again. This, and "And Then There Were Three." Instant happy memories of my brothers and dad listening to this great music every morning on the way to school.

I always thought this song was beautiful but it really hit me in the last ten years the true reality and meaning.
Yes, at 16 it was not something I thought about, much the meaning of the song, at 60 there is a rich seam here, recently lost both parents and this makes even more sense.
This was probably the song lyric that introduced me to the concept of time passing inexorably, and unavoidable endings. An intensely sad, but true part of life, and a lesson best learned when we're young. Moving words wrapped in superb music.

Genesis are without doubt one of the best bands ever, not THE best band however, add in ELO, Dire Straits, Travelling Willburys, Rolling Stones, The Monkees, Simon and Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac, The Hollies and so on.

I'm 67 years old and I remember buying this album when I was 20 years old back in 1976! Such a great album! These were my golden years for music.

Every time I hear this song it automatically takes me back to the day when my sister introduced me to Genesis this was the song that she introduced them to me with and I can say it that way because I had never heard the band before. She passed away in 2016, and her favorite song by Genesis was you'll be in my heart and that's what we played her memorial I'm going to have this one played at mine because it makes more sense now than it did before but I still like it and I won't stop liking it. Every time I hear this song I think of her so, there you have it.
Time passes, and 45 years later this song retains its beauty.🎹🎸🎶❤️

The orchestral is lovely and the singing is soothing greatness. Phil and the dudes truly always do the magical. Reminds me of Queen sonatas, but Phil shall always be his own uniqueness.
Phil was a great singer, one of the best, but to me anyway Greg Lake was the best singer during this era of music. He was subtly melodic, yet so powerful.

Genesis is addictive because the album Tick of The Tail includes both Dance on A Volcano and Ripples - a hot spicy main dish and a sweet dessert. You never get bored by the quality and variety of their music.
And in the middle, a thug pops out from the fake cake, punches you in the jaw, and makes off with your Diamond ring.

~20 years ago, I was driving some friends (several years younger than myself) to Taco Bell for some late-night grub and had old Genesis playing on my car stereo and they asked what that awesome music was. Yeah, I felt old, but I also felt proud to introduce it to others.

A great story my friend. I'm almost 68 now and I grew up with all this great music. My son is 32 and I've introduced him to all this fine music back 10-15 years ago and it took him a little time to appreciate it, but he loves my music now.

I can remember first listening to this in 1976, after buying with my first pay cheque. This track still remains my favourite on this album. It has a timeless, dream like atmosphere about time passing..

agreed. It's Steve playing guitar through a unique British guitar FX unit called the EMS (Electronic Music Studios) Synthi Hi-FLi. It made almost backward sounding/bowing fuzz effects on some settings. I think he mastered the Hi-FLi which is not easy! My company has been re-releasing the unit under license for 10 years now. Incidentally it was also used heavily on The Lamb Lies Down album.

They played this as part of their 1978 concert at Knebworth. That section you referred to just flowed out from the stage around the concert bowl and out into the countryside on the summer evening air. Completely spellbinding.

A masterclass in songwriting, and the synthesizer solo is wonderful. One of my all-time favourite Genesis tracks.
With the release of TrickOTT, we see the return of Ant's influence and fairy tale Genesis. Sublime record, from Dance on a Valcano to Los Endos.
Last album with Hackett. Pretty and sad at the same time for me.

This song reminds me of dearest friend/boyfriend who was murdered by pirates in the 90s. We were lifelong friends and loved one another dearly but not always in a romantic way as we were so much better just as friends. We used to listen to this album all the time. Rest In Peace, Ian. At the time I thought Genesis' earlier material had merit but was odd. Trick of the Tail was the first immediately.... Wow this is awesome... Album and Ripples the most obvious stand out masterpiece. I still think it's the best introduction to Genesis song, combining everything that there is to love about Genesis in a very accessible package.
Phil, you'll be missed I saw Genesis for the Trick of the Tale tour the best concert I ever went too and I've seen most of the greats nothing like the Lyrics of Tony Banks and Phil's unforgettable voice and masterful drum skills
