  • Welcome back to part 2 of our Kawasaki H2R project! Today, we're diving into the construction of the front disc brake, emphasizing the importance of symmetry, boolean operations, and dynamic subdivisions.
Throughout this tutorial, I share insights into my two-stage modeling process, focusing first on crafting the model to get the right shape and proportions, and then on refining the topology for a clean, professional finish. This approach allows for tackling complex shapes more effectively by separating the modeling and retopology stages.
As we progress, we delve into the use of QMesh, Live Boolean, and the Move Topologic brush to fine-tune our model, demonstrating how these tools can be leveraged to create complex mechanical components. We also explore supporting edges to achieve a natural and appealing falloff, crucial for the realism of our model.
Happy modeling, and we look forward to seeing you in our next session!

7:42 Since the part is symmetrical, being slightly off-center is acceptable and will be easily fixed during retopology. However, if you prefer it to be perfectly centered, you can use the inset and flat island from the ZModeler brush instead.

@@henrychervenka2166 It seems my eyes are good but my ears not so much. :P
Are there any reasons to use the slice over the inset in this type of cases?

@@jydmu In this particular case, I already had the slice circle selected. My focus was on maintaining the rhythm, flow, and momentum with a quick slice rather than switching the polygon action and target for the ZModeler brush. This is my personal approach to tackling these parts: nailing down the overall proportions and shapes in the first stage, then refining the details during the retopo in the second stage (if needed).
Since the retopology steps and results will be the same whether the part is slightly off-center with the slice circle brush or perfectly centered with the inset action of the ZModeler brush, it ultimately comes down to personal preference on which method you choose.

I keep having symmetry issues since working off the middle of the axis. Alot of time you say active sym but when i do its like on the other side of the screen. sometimes i can hit local sym and play with the active symmetry axis to fudge it or pivot point.. but i feel like im missing something here. Makes modeling alot of these parts pretty difficult, but thats my own misunderstanding this tutorial is awesome.

Try pressing (zero x, zero y, and zero z) under the macro menu. This will recenter the subtool and should fix any symmetry issues. You can also try pressing Unify under the tool > deformation menu.
