Zinc made a lot of people wealthy. My great grandparents found zinc on their farm and it afforded them a better life, they built a new outhouse with a regular door on it.
Thank you for sharing and for watching.
That's wealth?
@@laurettahelt255 you would be surprised what is wealth without entitlement
@@ginichase5648 hi! Believe me, I know.... .
@@laurettahelt255 No dear, that's sarcasm.
I looked up information about the Hegeler Carus families. Mary's father built this mansion. He and his friend were into zinc mining & other minerals. Mary was the first woman to graduate from an Illinois college with an engineering degree. She worked alongside her father in the business and eventually ran it.
Her husband was a writer and editor of religious articles and publications. He was a pioneer in introducing interfaith communication.
It is well worth reading information about these two families. There's a lot more to both of these families than the above synopsis. 😊
@@user-sy3ti6nt2e yes it is a great read.
This home is absolutely breathtaking ! Im glad to know it is being MAINTAINED . Can't even imagine what it would have been like to have lived there !

@@nickfrost9771 Youhad to be very wealthy to build a home of this ilk. Today, only the 1%’rs can afford to build like this.
What a truly special place this is! The grand staircase leading to the front door was breathtaking. Upon entering the rest of the mansion did not disappoint. The finishes from the floors to the ceilings are stunning! It is so great that it is being well cared for and others can appreciate the beauty and history of the mansion. Thank you.

It must’ve been interesting being a later resident, living in the faded glory of your family’s past. I’m really happy the house is still here!

Oh, it's the Hegeler Carus Foundation that owns the house, maintains it, and manages the tours.
A very well-done video. It is absolutely amazing that the home stayed in the same family for all of those years. Equally amazing and gratifying is that it remained basically untouched and that it is being preserved! (This situation is very similar to Wilderstein in Rhinebeck, NY, the Suckley home.)

This was built in the 19th century with horse and buggies. Amazing.

Yeah, they founded it in 1874. They didn’t build it in two years back then. This was left behind from the millennial reign.

SPECTACULAR!! UNPARALLELED. It was somewhat surreal by everything being intacted and probably in the original place where it was when the house was built. It has been well cared and loved. She has aged beautifully 😊

What an amazing home. It meant so much to the family that they lived there until the last one died.
I wonder how many people lived, loved and died there?
Thank you for this very well done video! 😊

WOW!! What attention was given to the details…….even in the smallest of places!! We built a small house and the decisions were overwhelming and yet so small compared to what this house has!! I’m impressed!!
I can hear the sound of children running through the hallways and up and down the stairs with their laughter and shouts spreading throughout the home! It’s a shame to see it not being up kept but I’m sure because of its size it would take so much money and time. Such beauty!!!

Yes exquisitely beautiful but Extremely somber, gloomy and haunting. It gives one feelings of trepidation. This home is the perfect setting for the Classic American Ghost Story. It has a chilling atmosphere. I would hate to be trapped there overnight.

I really wish the entire video was in color. No where has anyone ever seen the world in black and white unless it was in photos and it’s far more beautiful to see the home in color as we would see it if we were there. I wish I could do a walkthrough myself. I adore the old homes.

This is by far one of the grandest and most opulent mansions that I have ever viewed. It would cost a fortune to maintain. Thank you for this presentation.
Glad you liked it and thank you for watching.
Does this gorgeous home/museum belong to the state now? Maintenance needs to be kept up to preserve this part of history. I wish you had provided more information about the family. The family had to be very rich &/or the father had a very well-paying job. It doesn't look like any expense was spared when building it.😊❤

Not so sure there were bathrooms, otherwise they'd be in the vid.
Immaculate massive palaces worldwide had no bathrooms.
Seems as if the previous civilization didn't need them 🤔
@@JPOwantstoknow65 I didn't think of that .A bathing tub somewhere tho perhaps?
Very imposing exterior/interior-almost looks overbuilt or extra fortified-evoking a permanence that it would be admired and prevail for centuries! The kind of craftsmenship found here is irreplaceable and is to be marvelled at! Truly a Masterpiece and a showcase of how Homes were built to last forever! If it isn't on a listing of Homes of Historical Signifigance it should be!Breathtakingly Beautiful!

Interesting how the electrical upgrade service was installed. Romex cable kind of strewn all over the place. Orrigonaly had central gas lighting. Too bad they didn't pull wire through the pipe.
How good to know America has not destroyed every vestige of its architectural past. Buildings like this ought to be considered part of our American Heritage and government subsidized as such to maintain.
That would be nice but not always the case. Thank you for watching and for your comment.
Truly stunning! The detailing is exquisite. So happy to see it preserved, and not another parking lot. 😊

This was one beautiful mansion in its glory days and lack of funds let it deteriorate in the later years. What a nice video and we hope Illinois took over the place and made it a national historical site. It needs lots of work as much of the paint is cracking and falling away.

Most likely this home was built without running water, toilets, electric lights, or central heating. All of those items would have been added over time. It probably had "water closets" where they kept chamber pots and maybe even had a bathtub or two that drained to the outside, although needed filling by hand, which would be the job of the chamber maids. Most of the lights would have been gas fired and some heating via coal stoves in the basement, through those wall mounted registers. Everything else would be heated from the fireplaces until a central system was installed. BTW, central steam heat was available in that era, but not common. It would have been coal fired in most cases. My observation in this video is about odd placement of pipes and radiators, which typically means a retrofit system.

What a beautiful home. It does however, need someone to restore it. All the peeling paint and dry wood is going to start to destroy this place. Leaving it in its current state is doing it no favors. I hope someone steps up to save it.

Boldt Castle, on an island in the Thousand Islands of NY, was left to decay and ruin for 73 years after George Boldt's wife passed away during its construction. He was building it for her as a fairy tale castle, and he abandoned the project after her death. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977 and began to finish the construction and restore the entire complex according to Geo. Boldt's original plans. It is absolutely stunning and well worth a visit.
Thank you for sharing and for watching.
I hope there is a maintenance program for this spectacular house. It is showing signs of decay that need to be dealt with before they cause permanent damage. I would have preferred a lot more colour photography as well.
The house is used as a Museum and taken care of. The pictures were taken in black and white they are from the Historical Archive, when a building or place is added to the National Historic Register all photos are done in black and white it show more details than color. Thank you for watching.
Who says people in the older days were cavemen!!! These people were very smart people to build houses like this !!

I always wonder where the photos of the artisans and crafters responsible for the woodwork and stone work and tile work and the blueprints for these places are.

Beautiful mansion! But from what I saw of the walls with either paint or plaster missing, it still needs a lot of work, old fashioned expertise and TLC. I wonder if there are still craftsmen out there of the same caliber as those who built beautiful homes in the 19th century.
