  • In a mesmerising performance Pelé, at his physical peak, single-handedly demolishes Racing de Paris - Ligue 1's runners up at the time. In the 45 minutes of the remaining footage (1st half highlights are, sadly, lost) he manages to score 2 goals and make 2 assists as well as showcasing some incredible tricks and feints.

    Pelé here at 21, showing great all round appreciation. His vision & weighted passes a delight.
    He seemed to struggle at times, with his attempted progressive dribbles. Losing possession a few times. Wether the state of the pitch played a part, is difficult to tell.

      I imagine the pitch definitely played a part; they weren't kept to the high quality they are nowadays, which made them much harder to play on.
      Add to that, the ball wasn't as light nor as easy to handle as it is nowadays, it was heavier & harder to kick. Those two factors alone makes one appreciate past footballer like Pele.

      This wasn't one of Pelé's best matches, that showcased his incredible dribbling level's. Pelé scored more goals, from direct dribble runs he made, more than any player I've seen, barring probably Messi.
      Here's a video compilation of Pelé dribble goals: czcams.com/video/-0G0Hg5YFTs/video.html
      Maradona did a lot of flashy dribble runs. How many goals did he score off them?

      Pele is a better scorer, playmaker, ambidextrous, Physically the best player ever and more dominant, could score goals with his head and had more varieties in his dribbling than best.

    • @hellowalkman4506
      @hellowalkman4506 Před 2 lety +4

      Two very different dribblers. Best was more eye catching since he relied on quick change of directions which the eye can pick up more easily.
      Pelé on the other hand relied more on dummies and stepovers, something that isn't as easily picked up by the eyes.
      This is why Best looks like the better dribbler.

    • @johnpacino007
      @johnpacino007 Před 2 lety +6

      @@hellowalkman4506 Pelé did shorter dribbles than Best & Maradona & scored more goals from them. He also did it in smaller, packed area's, near & around the opposition penalty box, in zero space's, requiring unbelievable tight, intricate, " through the eye of a needle " close control.
      Best & Maradona made long, ball carrying, snaky running dribble's. But how many goals did they score direct from them?
      Pelé's dribbling had the far more end product...
      As for the " eye catching " . That's a personal aesthetic take. In the modern game were ball retentions are king. Long dribble runs are risky, because if you loose the ball just past the halfway line. You get killed on the faster transitions in the modern game.
      In that respect. Pelé's type of dribbling protects the team more, as he does it higher up & direct into the opposition penalty box.

      @@aidan2849 Just like 50 years from now people will say that players from that future generation would have scored 5000 goals in Messi's era. So, your comparison makes no sense. @@marybb3390 Your right, I'm arguing with hypotheticals. Personally I think Pele and Messi were the two best attackers the world has ever seen. It has to be said though that Ive watched a lot of highlights and the defending at times is very appalling. I do think Pele would find it harder in today's game. The thing with Messi that seperates him from most players is he doesnt need a goal or assist to have a good game. I've watched Messi for a long time and he's the most pivotal player to hsi team's build up that I've seen. His incredible dribbling opens up space, his passing, and reading of the game. He doesn't need to do fancy tricks or whatever to impress, he is the most efficient player ever imo. You cannot mark him out the game. 91 goals and 113 g/a in a callender year, don't think we'll ever see a players' prime like this ever repeated Messi's top 3 goal contribution in a callender year performances with 113, 95 and 90g/a all rank in the top 5 goal conributions of all time. Pele is in this list once with 96..
      And that's just G/A. Arguably Messi's impact stretches way beyond the simple measure of goals and assists. How many secondary assists does he have, how many attacks has he built and created from his insane dribbling, vision and passing? Every time he played versus a team, they had to adjust their gameplan to defend him. They had to be ready to allocate 2-4 players every time he got near the ball. Just his presence created space for his teammates.
      Messi at 35 years old is still outperforming Mbappe who is now on track to outdoing Pele's massive contribution in World Cups.
      He is still saving. Unlike Maradona who peaked at 26 or Pele 29 at 1970 cup, Messi won world cup at 35 along with golden ball and still going strong because he had been consistent and saving. Its bc messi is the most tecnichal player of all time
      Messi was only 21 when he was getting goat shouts and for good reason because his prime in 2012 was certainly the most dominant season we've ever seen statistically and in an entertaining aspect. 73 goals in 60 games is not normal. Anyways, I think Messi, Pele, CR7, Maradona R9, Best are the 6 best player's we've ever seen. Ability wise, Messi has to be the greatest, R9 up there as well. Longevity wise, its still Messi which is why he's widely accepted as the greatest player ever.

      @@aidan2849 This Messi narrative falls apart when one looks at the data. Evidence shows that Pele is significantly ahead of Messi in terms of goals per 90 min, assists per 90 min, non-PK goals and assists per 90 min, team goal contribution % in both overall career and during peak years (1-year, 3-year, or 5-year peaks). And that too considering only the official matches played (so, matches like these, which constitute 40% of his career, are not included). Including all competitive matches played by Pele, his numbers are staggering: approx. 1300 goals and 2000 goals and assists. Pele's peak is so much higher than anybody else's, he is in a whole different stratosphere. Now, coming to big matches, such as finals, Messi is exceedingly poor in most of them compared to Pele, who almost always stood out above everyone else. Pele's numbers and ratios do not change depending on whether he played in the Paulista, Brasileirao, Taca Brasil, Rio-Sao Paulo tournament, Copa Libertadores, Intercontinental Cup, or international level tournaments (including the World Cup). Messi's ratios on the other hand dwindle depending on the level of the competition, great against minnows in La Liga (such as Rayo Vallecano, Eibar etc.), bang average against the likes of Real Madrid, and in the UCL. Pele's success rate is also so much higher; for example, he won over 70% of the international tournaments he played in; Messi won less 20%. When evaluating them subjectively, such as in terms of skills, it is obvious that Messi only matches Pele in terms of dribbling and making short passes (both being great in these aspects, although Pele made more assists per game). Pele is ahead in everything else, such as goalscoring, shooting, aerial ability (heading, acrobatic volleys, including bicycle kicks), ability to use both feet (he scored several free-kick goals from Roberto Carlos like distances with his LEFT foot), ball progression from deep inside his half (with his greater strength, physicality, speed, power, and acceleration), making perfect long passes from deep inside his half (ala Pirlo) etc. Pele had good defensive ability and even played 4 official matches as a goalkeeper (when subs were not allowed). Pele was also an innovator, having invented some moves; Messi haven't invented any new skills as such. Taken together, there can be no comparison between Pele and Messi. Pele is alone in his perfection. Pele did it first: czcams.com/video/_xMQPJd1F9U/video.html
