I used to play with healing skill on a lot of my chars. Its advantage is in not triggering an attack of opportunity in combat (unlike chugging a potion). Add in stat bonuses etc and your heal can be quite large which is extremely handy if you get mobbed. You can easily get surrounded at times and triggering AoO's on 6+ mobs can lead to a rapid demise. That said I would rate healing as more of a beginner skill to take since it actively makes up for lack of knowledge of the game or module and poor positioning etc.
Ideally you would be better using a Fighter or Barbarian for this but you can do it with Ranger as well. The problem is that Rangers get Dual-Wield for free at level 1 and Improved Two Weapon Fighting at level 9 and if you choose to use a 2 handed weapon you are going to waste those feats. Also ultimately Fighter have access to some feats that no other class do that allows them to Specialize in weapons granting more damage. Barbarian rages work well to amplify the power of 2 handed weapons as well. I am not saying do not do it, because you might find it fun

would a two-handed greataxe wielding ranger be a good build?
