I kinda prefer the revised version where Marcy only has a slight cold, things like the Soupery and the Clambulance add a very Adventure Time touch of humor that this episode really needs. Also, I like how when Simon touches her forehead and claims she's "burning up" it's left ambiguous if she's really that hot or if he's getting colder

Yeah...this episode could've been a lot sadder.
Little destiny was made sick and given a cold off of just one cracked gem of the crown in the farm world
Looking back on this episode in hindsight today, I feel like Simon and Marcie make for a really nice and novel twist on the whole 'old, gruff badass dad and innocent adopted daughter in the apocalypse' trope that we've seen so much of in the past ten years. Like Simon ISN'T some stoic, grizzled badass, and he isn't even that old. He doesn't have great survival or fighting skills, he just has a bit of luck and the magic crown that's gradually destroying his sanity. It really strips any kind of power-fantasy out of this trope and really highlights the tragedy and character of it all.

Also helps he acts more goofy for the sake of Marcy, just so she can keep her sense of innocence which is so honorable but also downright depressing to think about

Have we seen that trope that often? The only one that comes to mind is unsurprisingly The Last of us. And season 1 of Telltales twd was very popular when they were still releasing episodes and that was about an ordinary guy who made a mistake but would still do anything to look after Clementine.
Marcy wasn’t immortal until after she starting hunting vampires, so her getting sick was still major at that young age. Simon did the best he could to take care of her
I mean she was insanely long lived since in farm world 1000 years after the bomb would have dropped she is still alive but extremely old so I think becoming a vampire just made her unageing
See, I always thought that Simon was using Soup as a euphamism for a specific medicine that Marcy needed, but he was too far gone to remember that he wasn't actually searching for soup.
love the "blink and you'll miss it" moment where simon is running from the oozers when he comes across a crowbar and pillow, and he chooses to hit the thing w/ the pillow lol my man

Very small thing but wanted to point out that Marcy did not have immortality as a kid. She was half demon so I'm sure that would give her a longer lifespan but she didn't gain immortality until after she was turned vampire. So I think Simons concern for her cold is fully justified. Anyways I love your content!

Yeah, the farmworld non-vamp version of her lived for 1000+ years, so I'd say that fits into the category of a long lifespan. It didn't seem very fun for her though with the aging.
Interestingly, if you look at Farmworld Marceline she's like 1000 years old and looks every one of those years.
Even when she's dissolving in the Lich's mutagenic acid stuff, her skeleton still talks.
Immortality without the luxury of no aging it would seem
@@TwitchyTopHat1 Yeah, you'd think with all that time Hunsen would've offered her to take up the family business as an alternative. But, with the lack of significant magic and no Simon to summon him, perhaps he either didn't know she was alive or couldn't cross over into farmworld's ooo equivalent.
Considering Adventure time had video games like Finn and Jake becoming detectives like their parents I wouldn’t mind if we got a Last of Us styled Adventure Time game staring Simon and young Marcy as they survive the recently destroyed and slowly developing ooo
Imagine Everytime you use the crown the world starts to change more and more making you think ooo is developing but it's just Simon going insane
The game actively disincentivizes combat by slowly degrading Simon's sanity and giving you a game over if you use the crown too much.
My favorite part of the episode has to be Simon singing the Cheers theme. It really fits into the situation, and when he says the last line, he looks like present Ice King for a few seconds, as if the transformation was complete.
I like that he basically uses cheers’ theme as a stabilising chant, like Evergreen never taught Gunter to - and in doing so, though it progresses his madness further, unlike earlier he’s able to take the crown off by himself.

This was one of my favorite episodes of the show as we see a cute, innocent young Marceline being under the care of the loving father figure that Simon was. Him trying to keep their spirits up while desperately clinging to his sanity for as long as possible to keep each other safe really shows why Simon is one of the few people Marceline genuinely cares about and expanding on the tragedy that was becoming the Ice King.
5:43 I actually like this theory kind of connects with the freezerburn flu that ice king gave the candy people in that one episode
The relationship between Simon and Marceline is probably one of the most interesting in adventure time and I really love your analysis of one of my favourite episodes. I like your theory that little Marcy was misremembering, whether intentionally or not, her illness with Simon. I think given all the trauma she went through at such a young age that it would be highly likely for her to repress or change certain memories in order to cope. I’d also never really thought about how unprepared Simon was to take care of Marcy, but that adds a whole other layer of tragedy to the situation. I love your videos, can’t get enough of your concise analysis that always make me see my favourite shows in a whole other light and add even more appreciation for the writers and animators.
I think the change to them looking for chicken noodle soup is what made it so memorable for me. The joke about the clambulance really stuck in my head

I assumed he was looking for medicine, but told marceline it was soup he wanted to keep her calm
Honestly I prefer the older version, but I understand why they couldn't air it. Adventure time has always had this air of implied tragedy, particularly after the first few seasons, but I like it when they go full out. It makes some of the scenes more powerful when you imagine that she can barely keep herself upright during the car scene, for example. You still know she's going to make it, but it feels tragic since Simon's trying so hard.
In general, my favorite parts of adventure time are the parts where it just gets real. It feels like you're hearing the life story of your goofball friend for the first time and learning that they lived a life of hardship and trauma.
Man that pair CARRIED the show and that's saying a lot considering we're talking about motherfucking Adventure Time

It’s my head cannon that Simon was yelling mother f-er when he finds the clambulance, but since Marcy is telling the story to Finn and Jake, mainly Finn who is still young she censored it for him

Adventure Time is so badass, they pretty much took some of the plot points of Cormac McCarthy's The Road and made it somehow E for all ages.
(For anyone who doesn't know what The Road is, it's pretty much one of the most famous dark post apocalyptic stories that helped inspire a bunch of tropes).
Marcy is like the child Simon and Betty could have had and I think he knows that.
I would want more of this duo and in the present of older Marcy and simon going on adventures with pb

I honestly prefer the concept that Marceline was never sick, but rather Simon's body temperature was getting colder. That's why her "fever" was worse the following morning.
Simon's a smart guy. He knew she wasn't sick, but he couldn't accept the reality of the situation. Not only does he have no control over any of their surroundings, but he's rapidly losing control of himself.
