When UnderVatten first came out I was all into HLB's Valde, and also was going through a break up. Gotta admit - since probably 2014-15 I was no more pleased by how old Vildhjarta sounds. And all things considered I listened to UnderVatten in kinda shuffle mode, and not even the whole thing. What a blasphemy. But 3-4 months later, when my life was all norm and balanced again, I've listened it two times in a row in intrumental, and GOD was I hooked. Since then I listen to this wonderful piece of art at least once per week, but more likely 3-4 times per week. And the thing is - it's still fresh! Idk how they did it, but the guys came out with the perfect fit for my music taste. I just can't listen to anything else now, dafaq
Its insane. They've perfected music
It’s nice finding people that appreciate MUV as much as me. I’ve listened to it at least once a week since release.
It’s quite literally ruined other music for me because it’s just so god damn phenomenal.

This is the album that keeps giving; the more you listen to it the more things you pick up and notice. This is art, this album is like the Lord of the Rings trilogy where I don't want it to end. Also the artwork for every song is custom made. Måsstaden Under Vatten is precious to me and one of my favorite things in existence

The meaning of the word 'anden' changes depending on which vowel you stress with a pitch accent when spoken out loud: 1st pitch accent gives you: *a*nden = the duck; 2nd pitch accent: *a*nd*e*n = the spirit. Search for "swedish pitch accent" for a nice vid explaining it better :)

@@Si-Al-Ti thank you for this!
Thank you for this, sir. I love talking about music with folks. Hearing such a trained ear and experienced musician break this down is so satisfying.
Thanks for watching!
you perfectly voiced all my thoughts about these two albums! thank you for such a detailed analysis!
Thank you for watching!!
It's so interesting seeing appreciation for their work on an analytical level! I personally just enjoy the work emotionally, so hearing how this all works is fascinating. UV has been such an important album for me - I've been in my mid 30's and music kinda lost its magic on me. I was sure nothing would ever reach me emotionally like all the discoveries in my teenage years. This album tore a lot of things open I thought I'd lost, and I'll forever cherish it for that. Even honored it as my first tattoo to keep reminding myself that no passion is ever truly lost. There's just something about these 1-2octave pitch little melodies between the chugging and the ambient that elevates their music from pure djent to something that reaches deeper for me.
On a side-note, try not to get the beard concerns too much into your head. A lot of men struggle with uneven growth, but noone ever noticed that as much as they do :D.
Dude this is so good. Expected to watch this for about two minutes, been watching for two hours at this point. I thought I knew these two albums in and out, but you made me notice a bunch of details I didn´t pay any attention to before. Just so much happening constantly which I love most about this band.
I recommend trying to translate the Under vatten lyrics too because in my opinion that album is lyrically superior to the first (Swedish isn’t my first language either). PS. Ensam i detta mörker = Alone in this darkness.
Google Bard (their ai tool) is great at translations.
Man I’m really glad that you finally listened this masterpiece. Once I was on their show, they gods. I wish to forget, so I can listen this music again from the first note
I'm so glad you kept that sneeze in hahahaha. I'm a quarter of the way through this but it's so cool to see someone else who appreciates this album so much. It's so rare to meet Vildhjarta fans, let alone people who appreciate it on such an in-depth musical level. Thanks man!
Thanks for watching!
It's so nice to stumble upon someone else geeking and fawning over this band's music this much too, cheers for putting in the time and for the additional music theory insights!
Love hearing your passion for these albums, I feel the same.
For me the album that came really close to the broken-speechless-overwhelmed kinda experience you describe, is Catch 33 by Meshuggah. First hearing Shed on a metal compilation disc, which send me in a whirlpool of discovering and re-discovering Meshuggah's music. Catch 33 has the same kind of structure, needing to listen to the whole album in one sitting and feeling an existential emptiness as the heaviness of Sum makes place for ambient guitars.
The same happened to me with MUV, which made me question my favorite band (which is important to me) for a year and resulted in Vildhjarta as the winner :)
By the way watching this video a lot of times. Just love how you passionately talk about all cool musical decisions and references 😁
hey just finished the reaction, and under vatten is such a chaotic masterpiece that i struggled to get really into it at first (i still recognised how good it is but it was like kinda too much for my brain at once lol) but your analysis really made me understand and get into this album more and really admitting how it's one of the best metal albums ever done, and your little reactions at some point were also kinda cute and funny and your long speech at the end was really interesting to listen. Great video great analysis, you just gained a new subscriber (now im gonna watch your + kristallfagel + reaction)
Welcome!
This is great. Exactly how I feel about the little details. We would be best friends in real life.
Lol great minds think alike
Can't wait to check this out in its entirety, these albums mean a lot to me as well!
Back to watch this video again because its that good of an analysis, and I still can't get over Masstaden Under Vatten. It's been over two years since I got into them with Masstaden and nothing else bends me down over a guard rail and rails me when my guard is down like how MUV does
It's truly something special
Thank you for this. I discovered Vildhjarta a month ago and it's been life changing. Nothing will compare.
I feel like you and I enjoy Vildhjarta for the exact same reasons. Amazing video. I'll show this to anyone if they ask why they like this band.
Thanks for watching!!
Great work. A pleasure to see someone who appreciates them as I do and actually knows a lot of stuff about their music. I know them from 2014+-, played a decent chunk of their songs and riffs on guitar. Basically they're my main motivation to play guitar, lol
This is absolutely some of the stuff ive been wanting without knowing it. S that you can kinda compare to Key Of Geebz music breakdown/analysis. and Vildhjarta is one of my favorite bands, love this a ton (+ ups for long form content, love that stuff too)
I totally agree with the vocal cadence thing between albums and languages. I think one thing that balances it out though is the dual vocal style of Masstaden. Undervatten is a bit more monotone.
30:30 that instrument is probably a guitar with a gated clean tone, and the guitarist is moving their picking between the bridge and neck to make it sharper, at least that's how I play it and it sounds good
the coolest part of måsstaden under vatten is the måsstadens nationalsång remix riff, yeah it has a lot of callbacks to måsstaden, but the riff is built from the end riff in all these feelings
Im 1:14:29 into this vid and geez thank you for this :) hearing you break down these albums and then the chord progressions on the piano is just magic. Another album you should totally check out is Reign of Silence by Indistinct, they are about to release a new album, but Reign of Silence has been in the top of my lists with Vilds albums and No Oaths album liminal, theres parts in Reign of Silence though that are just so beautiful like 4:05 into their song Burden, or 3:26 into Sulphur, and 6:25 into their song Cascade,
I'll add it to my reaction list, thanks for the suggestion!
Cool to see someone enjoy the album as much as a I do, and your theory knowledge is awesome too. Great video :)
Thanks for checking it out!!
guitars are in drop E, lower than that pitchshifted effect, so there can be some mistuning happening.
Masstaden under vatten is a very pretty album. I've never heard anything like it before and I can absolutely tell its influential to newer bands. Its like this generation of metal's "Angel Dust"
Great video, i always get reminded of a comment i saw on the album stream "damn Music 2 just dropped" and the thread going on about how the sequel to music just dropped 😂😂
Love it
As soon as I heard you singing the guitar notes with perfect pitch, I knew this analysis was going to be *good*.

Some little facts about their cleans. Buster did a mix session for the single version of Den Helige Anden and he explains that they cleans on this album are old clean tracks coming from late 2000's, even before 2011 masstaden. Also says that almost all those cleans have different amount of pitch shifting and different amount of time stretch editing, therefore they sound different because of artifacts (or audio degradation) so that makes it "microtonal" or no on 440hz
That's so cool!
calle also said multiple times on instagram that they dont really intonate their guitars
that summary at the end of the video is exactly how i felt and im glad im not alone
These albums have by far been my to favorite albums I've ever listened to, unless Vildhjarta somehow release a better album I think they'll stay at #1-2 forever, I've listened to both of them almost 100 times and they never get boring or repetitive to me, they're genuine masterpieces.

@@coreyclip1absolutely!
Fantastic. Regarding that "singing it like you say it" deal, absolutely agree. It happened to me with Uneven Structure after Februus. Man, I love Uneven's instrumentals. But Matheu just does not get English in a good way. He does that thing so much I just had to stop listening to them. Don't know if you have ever tried them, "8" is a masterpiece, but the rest is just too uncanny to hear only because of the lyrical-vocal part.
Glad I'm not the only one who gets bothered by that. I can overlook it when everything else about the album is amazing though. I haven't heard anything from Uneven Structure, I'll have to check them out
Have you heard Archspire? Wondering cuz to me their riffs are like classical music in 400bpm (a lot of intervals and chord progressions remind me of classical music)
oh, and of course t h a l l - almost forgot to write it today
I've heard bleed the future and I love it. It is very classical in the arpeggios and stuff just cranked up to warp speed
try the previous album - stuff like A Dark Horizontal or Mimic Well is insanely good @@coreyclip1
2:15:30 I think it's a pretty simple pluck sound with a ping pong delay on it (ping pong delay is an echo that alternates between the right and left channels)
That makes sense. It sounds so alien though!
@@coreyclip1It does! Finally finished the video, sorry for the comment spam, but that outro speech was really beautiful and inspiring. man how i love vildhjarta it is so cathartic idk. Please please take a look at SEVEN and his album Dark scientific or Interdimensional act I & II. It is not as intricate and playful but it is more athmospheric. I'd love a reaction, I think you can say a lot about it with your musical knowledge aswell :D
I'll add it to my Patreon poll!
i find it funny that you say that Masstaden is more enjoyable if you want to listen to singles than masstaden under vatten while i feel the complete opposite, masstaden has a really nice flow and masstaden under vatten has way to many parts and even entire songs i dont really like / or feel like theyre going against the flow of the album
im like 20mins into the video and am really impressed with the work you put in respect man !
Well, Max Martin was involved in that Katy Perry song, because of course he was, so maybe it's the bad Swedish influence manifest.
Possibly Swedish, allegedly sounding a bit melodic, is more allowing towards fudging the syllables. I don't know.
As a danish person this band has made be respect Sweden a bit more
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but both of the new singles actually use a riff from den helige anden. So they are already tying the new thing they’re making into under vatten. I genuinely think den spanska kanslan is their best song to this day, so I have high hopes it will absolutely top under vatten.
Edit: Calle has since corrected me, and it isn’t the same riff, so I’ve just found something where there actually isn’t anything. Please disregard this.
We have not used old riffs on the new singles
@@callethomer Oh! My apologies then. Just that the riff from 1:20 at den helige anden - under vatten sounds VERY similar to the riff in the intro to + ylva + and the riff at 4:03 on + den spanska kanslan +. Not sure if it’s intentional or not, but the similarity is uncanny! Adore all of your music, sorry for the inconvenience if I have spotted something that doesn’t exist, I’ll go edit the original comment to correct it.
@@vernaltear No worries mate! :)
Can't say I hear the same as you Im afraid but maybe you find it similar because of the slides. I use a lot of slides when I write
@@callethomer so I’ve been now listening to the three riffs I mentioned over and over again, and it’s because of the very beginning of the riff, the tone shifts are very similar, and then on the part where you do some long slides in den helige anden, in + ylva + and + den spanska kanslan + you don’t use slides, but follow a similar structure in terms of the melody. They’re similar riffs, but not the same like you said.
I spend way too much time listening to music, it’s very hard learning and I’m relatively new and have only gotten my 8 string a few months ago. You guys are my biggest inspiration!
@@vernaltear thanks :)) glad you find the music inspiring

They had 2 vocalists on the måsstaden album. so the overlapping or when it feels crammed, is just one vocalist going to the other.

so so cool dude, I would say sometimes u speak a bit too much I found myself skipping a few seconds a few times when you were saying the same thing but keep doing this! we want your analysis on spanska too
37:32 - 37:33 what special thing did they do on this dissonant-sounding note/chord, i'm not very familiar with musical terminology or how it works, but this part is just my favourite out of the whole song
You mean that little split second? It plays a note that's a half step down from the tonic (the main chord in the key were in) which makes it sound spooky because of how close it is to the tonic when that note isn't usually in the key signature
1:41:01 I have the same issue when drinking alcohol and found there's actually a term for it:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction
I was under the impression for the longest time that I just had a really low tolerance for alcohol, but since this reaction is heavily determined by genetics (presence or absence of a specific enzyme) no matter how much or little I drink I have the exact same reaction every time.
I wanted to acknowledge this aside because if you are able to drink regularly despite having the reaction, it does increase risk for developing esophageal cancer compared to others who do not experience the reaction.
Very interesting. I've only really been drinking a few times a year
Your take on ÅÄÖ is not garbage, pretty much everything in Swedish is kind of forward in the mouth and we roll the Rs some more than others depending on accent.
Nice, good to know I'm close!
The only other album that matches the sorrow and (somehow) uplifting nature of Måsstaden Under Vatten is the OST for Silent Hill 2. If you've never listened to it before then I couldn't recommend it enough. Maybe do a reaction to it?
