Are they square pegs or successful people? That is the question. Rush was performing in this song here the status quo for the average Joe and Jane. There were numbers (and still are) in any high school class who would persevere through the teeny boppery, cliques and bullying in public schools to go on and become highly successful.

Couple things. First of all, people like me like watching reaction videos to good rock and roll for a number of reasons. One reason is we don't want to see this highly creative stuff from the past die out. We grew up with it, we know how great it was and is. Do you ever get excited when a friend discovers and enjoys something that you've known about for some time? Not only does it take you back to your own discovery (nostalgia) when you see them light up in recognition of the goodness, but it brings you the additional joy of knowing there is one more person out there who likes it or at least can appreciate it. Now, there are a million reaction videos out there and not all of them are interesting. Yours are interesting because you're intelligent, curious, non-judgmental, and genuine. I hope you're taking some credit for that. :)

One of my favorite Rush songs, and I hadn't listened to it in a long time, so thank you for reacting to this! Rush is one of the all-time best power trios!! My current favorite power trio is The Warning, three sisters who have been playing together since the youngest, the bassist, was seven. She just turned 15. And they rock! Rush was one of their inspirations as a power trio, and drummer Neal Peart is one of the people that Paulina, drummer and songwriter, cites as an influence in her playing.
And I'm down with what you said at the end. I am currently trying to find ways to strike out on my own. No 9 to 5, at present. In fact, in their second 'TedX Talks' at UNR, titled "You've been warned!" from two years ago, Paulina tells people they have to fight for their dreams. She is really an energetic, inspiring person. All three are! Go watch that, if you get a chance.
There's also another 'TedX Talks' video from the year before that you might want to see after that. There are a whole lot of great recent songs of theirs (all original music) for you to react to! Rock on!!!

I was lucky to grow up with RUSH. We had songs like this to grow up with. Songs that were theraputic to people like me who was socially awkward because I spent all my time playing drums. There were times I felt like an outcast because of my devotion to practice and my music, but I had songs like this to play along with and motivate me to keep going. I'm 50 still playing drums and still playing at a high level recording a cd last year and playing every weekend. Rush was such an inspiration to my drumming and spiritually. I also was spurred into writing lyrics when I learned Neil Peart wrote Rush's lyrics and I also began singing as a drummer as well. So glad I didn't cave to the norm and kept my dream alive. Bands like rush, triumph, pink floyd, led zeppelin, and later dream theater were there with songs that made you think and grow instead of the party songs and love songs that got the radio play.

Not only is this the greatest song of all time, but there is so much more to this song than meets the eye. I personally know several people who have done their Ph.D. theses on RUSH and this song specifically. Aside from its OBVIOUS meaning (i.e. people who are not considered "cool" or "popular" being cast out from society), there is actually a "double meaning" to this song. The secondary meaning is the irony of people from the big city wanting to escape to where there is peace and quiet (i.e. the suburbs) yet the people from the suburbs want the "action" and want to go down to the big city to find it/experience it. Hence, we have subdivisions socially as well as geographically. It's almost the "flip side of the coin" kind of song. The more you listen to it, the more you appreciate its many, many layers and (as always) magnificent musicianship by the greatest band of all time. Not my opinion, but simply a fact of life.

Your reactions are amazing. It's so much fun to watch someone new to Rush (and young) enjoy it as much as you clearly do. It's obvious your a musician because you react to every part that's noteworthy no matter which instrument is shining at that moment.

Great song and thank you for those words after.
I wish to share my favorite Rush song with you, "Secret Touch" from their 2002 album "Vapor Trails". If you decide to do a reaction vid to this, look up the remixed version (the band had a producer that royally messed up the mix in the original release).
The lyrics were written by drummer Neil Peart as he spent a long sabbatical from the band to recover from a devastating set of circumstances (he lost his daughter to a car accident and his wife succumbed to cancer less than a year later). The song speaks to the way back, to reconnect to the land of the living.
    Plus the music kicks ass!

Brings back good memories. I grew up in the 909, in the early 80's not much to do there and people tended to get along, so our crowd was diverse. The white guys would share Rush and other rock bands with black and hispanic friends, the black and hispanic (and Indian, Middle Eastern, various Asian, etc. etc.) friends would share their music favorites back with us, it was good times, I'm still in touch with some of them despite having moved away and moved on in life. It started a life-long love affair for me with Motown and funk. We all just dug each other's stuff and it was a happier time, before the media started telling everyone that we should hate each other. Praying for the good times to come back some day.
Thanks for posting this, it made me feel happier today. P.S. LOVE the way you move and groove to this, you are a very musical person and as a musician, I love seeing this in others.

The soul that inhibited the shell we all loved known as Neil Peart was brought to us from somewhere that gave a gift of him to our realms for a short time. He lived many lifes through his travels. I will never forget what he an inspiration in my life. Thank you Miss for understanding this music and appreciating it and I think Neil would want people to celebrate life even when its light dimmed.

Love your energy and thoughtfulness in regards to the lyrics, but also your perspective and insight you shared with us at the end. Progressive Rock/Metal has a LOOOT of amazing things to offer, and ton of variation. From the guys who laid the foundations, like Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin....to the newer bands like Tool, Isis (the band lol, they were Isis before 'Isis' is what it is now...) and Pelican (instrumental prog metal) and a ton more others could mention. I look forward to joining you on your journey. Liked, Subbed, and wrung the ball!

I was a teenager and a huge RUSH fan when Subdivisions came out. The song reaches out to teenagers that dream of better things and just want to fit in. Play one of my favourites and I believe they have never played it live “Everyday Glory” from Counterparts. “The Pass” from Presto has very strong lyrics one of Neils best if not his best lyrics.

You listen, and get what they are talking about. If you are reacting to Rush, you have to do that. You can't just nod your head and jam out.
This band demands thoughtful interpretation of the song, and you deliver that!!

And it's true, you found something to do what is appreciated by others and, above all, yourself. May all of your dreams come true (and be careful what you wish). Love
