  • Transcranial alternating current stimulation, abbreviated as tACS, is a method to change brain activity. Grover et al. 2022 used it to improve memory.
Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique. Low intensity alternating currents are applied to the head, which have a small effect on the brain. Due to the low intensity, tACS is safe. The alternating currents can be applied at different frequencies, immitating neural oscillations (brain waves). Thereby, these brain waves can be made stronger, which can improve cognitive functions.
Grover and colleagues used it to improve memory in healthy elderly volunteers. They show that tACS in the inferior parietal lobule at the theta frequency improves memory. This effects was frequency specific, since gamma tACS over the same region did not improve memory. Also, gamma frequency tACS (but not theta tACS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex improved memory.
Altogether this study indicates that tACS may become a therapeutic tool to treat and prevent neurological and mental health disorders.

USE OF STOCK IMAGES AND VIDEOS
Occasionally we make use of stock images and videos (pixabay.com or pexels.com). We use these to make our videos more lively (better than looking at a blank screen). These stock videos should not be taken as an exact scientific reflection of the discussed content. In some cases they are not fully accurate. We try to have a high viewing pleasure, while at the same time create as little confusion as possible. Thus we aim to only use them when it is clear that they are not directly related to the discussed content.
    CHANNEL GOALS
The Psyched! channel focuses on providing education about psychology and neuroscience. Here you learn all about human behavior, the mind and the brain. It is our goal to reach everyone, from people who are casually interested to academic researchers. As such we provide simple explanation videos as well as profound lectures. This is really interesting. Are there any studies looking into how well the brain performs while under tacs?
I heard something about the military using tdcs to enhance staff performance somewhere.

Yea there are quite a few studies summarizing the effects on the brain and cognition! Here is a recent review: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364661322002984
I am planning to cover this topic in a lecture on our secondary channel in the coming weeks :)

Which tacs devices do you recommend?

I am not too familiar with commercial devices. Research devices are extremely expensive, so those would be no option. I have no experience with it myself, but I hear good things about Bumble Bee. They don't seem to sell any esotheric stuff, but just a solid tACS machine.
