This was an excellent episode. People that haven’t handled a team cannot fathom how much work and skill is involved here. Those are well trained draft horses and this was still a chore.

Drafts are usually so tractable. I have a lot of draft crosses for that reason, love their dispositions. But its true for most horses the more you work them the better they are

I remember when I was in college working on a ranch, we had two palominos that were team horses and had been retired recently. My friend and I thought we could put a saddle on each of them and try to use them as trail horses. My friend got his saddled up and was waiting for me. Well my horse would have nothing to do with a saddle. After much coursing I got him saddled up and got him going out on the trail. Not even 20 yards out, he decided he did not want to be ridden. He tried to buck me off but I stayed on. After a few minutes he calmed down and I took him back to the arena. I tied him to the fence post so I could get him to rest. Again, he would have nothing to do with being tied up and proceeded to pull the fence railing out of the post and run with a fence post attached to the end of his lead rope. My friend came back and helped me get the fence post out of the rope and put Mr. Fussy Britches away. What a fun day LOL.

OH JASON!! I've been waiting over a year for this video! THANK YOU so much for sharing the fellers with us! They seemed to be having as good a time as you were near the end there.
And yeah, a runaway team [with or without wagon] is one of those 'life flashing before your eyes' moments 🤣I hear you on that front!
Such a lovely video, I smiled the whole way through! As much as you love doing it and as much as you don't have the time to, I hope those moments of Peace you feel whilst driving can encourage you to make more time for yourself. It's the little things, Jason. The little things that save us.
Maybe teach a hand to harness up or give one of the local 4Hers a chance to volunteer their time for some practical skills and experience harnessing a team. Sure it'd cost some time to train them, but wouldn't that equal out to many more days where you wouldn't have to spend the time to do it but still want to drive?
I'd love to go for a ride. To be so peaceful and present is a wonderful feeling.
Happiest of New Years to you and the fam, Jason! May the winds be always at your backs!

I grew up in the interior of B.C., Canada, where we used teams until we got our first tractor in 77. Teams are defiantly one of those things that the old saying, use it our loose it, applies to. They are well worth the effort to maintain them. Cheers, Billy

I miss doing your job. Couple years ago I bought a Moline freight wagon i have some older harnesses maybe God will give a chance at it again. Enjoyed watching your video. Thanks God Bless.

An old timer told me to run the lead rope over the hitching rail and tie to a front foot, that sure helps. Your so right a run away team is scary! I bet that was very cool having the Bud Clydes at your ranch, very cool! I went on and had Clydes and had much better luck with them, also harness trained a bunch of young Clydes for others. There used to be a group of us Guys that farmed 40 acres with draft horses and mules for many years. Lots of work but lots of fun!
