    Wow! I am pretty new at spinning. Over a year ago my husband so kindly made me a DODEC (plans found free on Google), because I wanted to see if I would like spinning before I invested in a new wheel. It spins, but there are not many videos on how to spindle spin, so I don't recommend it to a newbie. lol Then I bought a Electric Eel Wheel 5.1. I really like it for it's portability and it was very reasonable in price. After that I was on a trip in Wisconsin last fall and stopped by Susan's Fiber Shop to just see what she all had. Susan sat down with me for a couple of hours trying out different wheels in my budget range and I walked away with a Ashford Kiwi II and a Snyder Drop Spindle. I am very pleased with those purchases. I just need a Super Flyer for my Ashford. I found out I really enjoy taking fleece to fiber. I have all fiber prep tools now and would like to get a used Drum Carder. I am 66 and it is never to late to find something you enjoy and love doing, Whether I am using a drop spindle or spinning on a wheel, it is so relaxing.

      I agree, Chris, that it's never too late. Hobbies, learning, and having fun keep you young anyway! I've seen DODECs online before, but not in person. You know I CAN spin on a spindle, but I got a wheel first, so I am not great on a spindle, because I put all my efforts into the wheel from the beginning. It's great that she spent time with you and gave you the chance to try a bunch of different equipment!

      Thank you for this Chris, I’m 26 and I have come across the spinning community through weaving and I think I’m in love. Both this comment and this video is telling me it’s never to late to try something, who knows maybe I’ll love spinning as well. I bought my first handspun art yarn and I adore it, I can stare at it for ages and admire the squishy amazing ness of the colours and textures. I’m still a little overwhelmed by the choices of wheels though so I’ll have to do more research. I definitely need to save up

    I had the same experience with Spinolution custom service, I bought 3 wheels new, each had issues and some flaws. I called and was told that was within the parameters of quality control. Missing bolts, bent flyer shafts on two, big splinters hanging off the wood, runs in the finish. It was a terrible experience. At the high price of them I expected a functional, well made and finished wheel. Thankfully, I got help from another seller that helped me fix them. I sold each within a year (I was honest about my issues) and will not support a company that doesn’t stand by their products.
    I bought a schacht matchless and a Hansen mini spinner, both companies have impeccable customer service. Had to send my matchless in, the paid for it and had it back to me in two weeks, no questions asked. It was new and under warranty.

Great vid thank you. Be careful of those spindles, you might go to sleep always dreaming of spinning wheels.

    Thanks for the tour of your wheels. You are so lucky to have a hubby that can assist you in your creative endeavors like that. It's so nice to see different wheels out there and how they perform. I spin on spindles only at the present time. My hubby is very sick and his needs come first. If I could start over I would be spinning at a younger age and would've been able to have spinning wheels as well. You know, the woulda, shoulda, coulda type deal. That's where I'm at. I love being able to create my own yarn. It's so rewarding. I do what I can and I'm happy with that. Thank you 😊

    My SO knows better than to ask how many wheels, looms, etc. are enough/too many...he has enough firearms of one sort or another to start his own army, plus all of the accoutrements for reloading, repairing, building, ad nausea! He also is a bow hunter (with all of the assorted goodies), a leather worker and a serious beader. I only have six wheels at the moment, 7 looms of various types (2 of which still need to be put together), and all of the other odds and ends of spinning and weaving equipment...but still have other items on my "to be acquired" list. Good thing we live in a large house with lots of outbuildings (don't get me started on the tack room or the tool shed). Having an engineering hubby, or in my case a gunsmith who can tear down, clean, and reassemble a WooLee Winder in the blink of an eye, is sooo handy! Totally worth the effort to keep them fed in my book!

    Hi Trish well I thought of four names; Bobby, Eileen, Cricket and Connie. Your Bobbin leaned or wobbled; so that's why I picked Bobby or Eileen. It used to make a chirping, creaky noise; so that's why I picked Cricket. And the lady kind of conned you when she sold you this spinning wheel; so that's why I picked Connie. Or pick something nice because it's not your wheels fault that she had all these problems. I hope this helps or makes you smile. Thanks for always making me smile when I watched all of your videos.

    I might be on my way to spinning wheel potato chip syndrome. I've wanted to try spinning for quite a while, but was put off by the price of new wheels. I recently decided to give an EEW 6.0 a try. It just recently arrived. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Well, before it arrived I spotted an Ashford Traditional wheel in one of the online marketplaces with a combination of price and condition that I couldn't resist. It should be here later this week. I tend to suffer from potato chip syndrome with most things I get into. I have five dogs, a half dozen or so vintage sewing machines, a couple of looms, and the list goes on.

    I would give that spinolution wheel a guy's name, because it reminds me of a bad date... How about Bentley, since it came to you all bent... Spelling is intentional, spinolution doesn't get a capital S from me after hearing what happened to you 😕
    Now of course your collection will not be complete until you get a Saxony style wheel... I thought I would only spin on a Saxony for the rest of my life... Until my daughter, who was very devoted to her e-spinner, decided to try the 2nd hand Ashford traditional I brought home in February, and decided to buy a old Louet S10. She did not like the Louet and wanted to trade, so I told her I would give the Louet a try. It is slowly growing on me (maybe I should name her Ivy) and I might just keep it, it has the benefit of having large bobbins...

    I wish I had watched your video before I purchased a Spinolution King Bee. What a disaster! I purchased the wheel and when it arrived, the accelerator wobbles and the drive bands won't stay on. It looks like it was damaged in shipping because it was packaged so poorly. Spinolution sent me instructions to try to adjust myself. I spent 30 minutes trying to fix it and gave up. You don't spend $1100+ on a new wheel and then have to fix it when it arrives. Spinolution paid to ship it back for repairs. In the meantime, I bought an Ashford Joy 2. Guess what, it worked right out of the package. I have a feeling that I will also be collecting spinning wheels. Any experience with a Lendrum?

      I do! I was around someone the other day who said "I just don't see how anyone could need a third wheel." I thought, "Okay, I'm sure you're nice, but you are definitely not my people." 😂😂

    Do you have Ashford country spinner 2. I just ordered one. If you do have one I was wondering how you or anyone else likes it?

    I want to learn to spin and weave...I already knit and crochet. I had a friend show me some basics in college...but it was such a busy time of life. Now that I'm retirement age, I'm wanting to get back to it...but not sure I'm smart enough for the spinning. I listen to you, and have zero understanding of the vocabulary.

      Terms can be learned just like you learned all the terms for knitting and crochet. Stick around and watch the spinning Playlist. We'll have you making yarn in no time!

    Do you have an idea what that piece of wood is for where the motor is attached to? I have that in my very old flax wheel and don’t know what it is……

    Great video of your wheels ,I have an Ashford Traveller, single treadle, and I just purchased an old Mennonite made wheel that needs a few things to get it running.I would call your wheel sketchy or risky lol

      @FiberLoveDiary  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks! I love my Traveller so much. She was definitely sketchy, but now she's working like she should. The Mennonite wheel sounds interesting!

    I’m pretty interested in the Schacht matchless, but then my other two wheels are both Schachts. My problem is not having enough space.

    • @FiberLoveDiary
      @FiberLoveDiary  Před 5 lety

      Right now, Freya is my favorite, but it's mostly because she is just very versatile. I can relate to the space thing though. I don't have a studio or craftroom, so finding space for full size wheels gets more challenging as the herd grows.

      Not right now! I am planning to open an old Etsy storefront to sell some handwoven towels, so yarn could be in the future someday.
