Great job guys. Was the area very remote? Couldn't you have brought maybe a generator and some sort of power tool to help trench? And are the recovery techniques different from other specimens? Why wouldn't you make a field jacket to stabilize the rock a little more? I cant tell you how many times i cringed thinking the rock was going to break in pieces. You guys did a fantastic job. Congratulations on a wonderful find. Total time to remove??
Shale is jurassic mud that has been hardened over time and can crumble apart in your hands. The town of lyme regis is actually built on top of the stuff and erosion is a massive problem for the town. In the past, houses have been destroyed by landslides 😢
+John Cummings Hi John. The fossil did come out in essentially 4 pieces. We did under estimate the total length meaning that a number of vertebrae were outside the original rectangle we cut. These were all carefully collected. I don't know how much you know about Dorset Ichthyosaurs. They are usually found in a more robust shale than this one. Typically the bones lie on a harder substrate allowing a better chance that they can be lifted with fewer breakages. Unfortunately my Ichthyosaur is in very soft shale, also there was a fault line running through the fossil and it was almost inevitable that it would open up along this line and it did. We also had to lift it before the next tide as a storm was coming in. If we had not got it up it would have been wrecked completely. Please be assured that it is receiving a great deal of care and attention during the preparation as you will see if you follow my updates.Alan Saxon
Towards the end of the backbones is something called a 'tailbend' where the bones bend sharply downward, creating the bottom cresant shape of the fork. They dont have bones at the top of the fork shape. Very rarely, ichthyosaurs have been found with skin preservation and an outline of the entire body shape. If you search youtube 'dean lomax hauff museum' its only a 5 minute video, he'll show you an ichthyosaur specimen with a complete outline of skin, including the forked tail and dorsal fin. ☺
