I recall when in 1983, Salman Rushdie published his novel "Shame" which was banned in Pakistan and the book-shop assistant in my area told me Salman Rushdie used to live in the neighbourhood........a yarn he tried to spin, knowing not that I knew he was not a Pakistani......but this is how people make up stories.
