@@meathir4921 I mean it was more a personal thing.
Hex grid tactical games require a lot larger amount of work to figure out viable Stratagy. Spoiled by Advance Wars 1+2, I found the unit choices lacking and it was much more about just pile diving each most dangerous unit every turn. (Which is a legit tactic but without CO powers it was a lot of tedium.)
If you move a unit into an area by it self, potentially 6 other units could run up and fire on it. This ment that to win most fights you had to pick units that could group together, forming less of a tactical formation, and more like a blob of units.
It's a different beast. But I'm sure if I had it over Vattle Guise as my pack in game when I got the Gameboy, I would have enjoyed it at the time it came out. (My cheap Dad bought my Gameboy second hand from a Japanese student. But at least he also bought Z:Links Awakening brand new to make up for it. The system came with 3 Japanese games... Tetris, Baseball, Vattle Guise and an English version of Mario Land 2.

Well there are fan translations and guides for the early Japanese only games.
Honestly only the SNES game was worth hunting down and learning how to play in Japanese.
But yeah, Advance Wars 1 is still kind of rough in places, but still fun today.
I'm working back through it, sadly not on orginal hardware since my GBA and DS both died.
I highly recommend skipping to Advance Wars 2, if you ever get stuck at that one point in AW1 (mission 16 or 17)
With the backwards compatible N3DS XL I have played both DS Advance Wars games as recently as 5 years ago.
I never really got into BW1. But then I don't like most fps games.

Yeah, I’d say Advance wars Day of Ruin does have great music and the best balance over most games in the series with no cheap C.Os or op powers like in Duel Strike. But I don’t know, I still prefer the more cartoony and light hearted look of the first three games. That’s what Advance Wars 2 is my favorite, since it’s not unfair like the third game, and fixes a lot of stuff from the first.

Gameplay wise I liked Dual Strike the most because you could customize allot more and tag teaming is pretty cool.

I suppose the small series that is almost ridiculously similar on Steam going by the name of "Tiny Metal" (with the sequel being called "Tiny Metal: Full Metal Rumble", with two DLC campaigns that are absolutely worth getting, in my opinion) wouldn't really count, would it? Then again, WarGroove sure doesn't seem to, going by the same logic, so... Eh, oh well, at least there's the 1+2 reboot coming up to look forward to, but if only it wasn't limited to only the Switch...

In this respect, the games have been consistent: the last mission always had to be the most unfair and difficult...I always had the feeling that you could only survive this mission with a lot of luck, and I just wasn't up for that.
