I don't think its that hard to transition from the friendship to courtship phase. In my opinion, its all about chemistry. The way I would do it is to keep the friendship alive, but subtly add little elements like flirting, teasing, etc in the interactions between you two. If she is cool with it and bites, it adds a little excitement to the dynamic between you two without making it weird. That's kind of my way of probing to see if the person is interested or not. If not, then cool just remain friends. I mean, you could go full awkward and confess how you feel, but I've never had good experiences doing that haha.
I don’t think the direct approach in itself is awkward. I think it’s only awkward if you make it so(ie long lapses of hesitation, beating around the bush with unnecessary convo, stumbling over words etc). If you just have an honest conversation, at the very least they’ll respect you for making what you want clear and concise, so you’ll know where you stand.

After a few months the worst was over and we were able to slowly regain parts of our "normal", though we'll never go back to what it was before (because it was unhealthy). Yeah I got all the way to the sims part in my personal life. We had been friends for 10 years, I knew what was going to happen, “I see you more like a sister” and all of that because it has happened so much before. So I sent him this long winded message confessing and I understood perfectly that he didn’t feel the same way but I had to put it out there to say I tried because I loved him and his daughter. We worked next door to each other so he told me to call him after work. I did and he said he was waiting and so I picked him up knowing I was going to have to try my hardest not to cry. I'm a retired 70 y/o white guy and I've watched a few of sWooZie vids and, hey sWooZie you have wisdom beyond your years! You go bro!
Yeah I got all the way to the sims part in my personal life. We had been friends for 10 years, I knew what was going to happen, “I see you more like a sister” and all of that because it has happened so much before. So I sent him this long winded message confessing and I understood perfectly that he didn’t feel the same way but I had to put it out there to say I tried because I loved him and his daughter. We worked next door to each other so he told me to call him after work. I did and he said he was waiting and so I picked him up knowing I was going to have to try my hardest not to cry. He looks at me and says “I’ve always thought about this too. I thought you weren’t into me. Now that I know you are, I want to jump in and try see if we can make this work.” A year and a half later we’re still together looking into moving in together and his daughter and I have the best relationship I could ever ask for.
