  • Forgiveness is a gift that you give to yourself.
On this special episode of the podcast, Ryan talks to Dr. Edith Eger about her book The Choice: Embrace the Possible (geni.us/qGiv) which details her time at the Auschwitz concentration camp, the importance of feeling traumatic experiences in an effort to heal them, how suffering should lead us to strength rather than victimization, why forgiveness is a gift that you must choose to give to yourself, and more.

A native of Hungary, Edith Eva Eger was just a teenager in 1944 when she experienced one of the worst evils the human race has ever known. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, she and her family were sent to Auschwitz, the heinous death camp. Her parents were sent to the gas chambers but Edith’s bravery kept her and her sister alive. Dr. Eger is a practicing psychologist and a specialist in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. She is also the author of the bestselling memoir The Choice: Embrace the Possible and The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life.

My grandpa just turned 90, he says "The only thing that people can't take from you is your knowledge". He is always, literally always, reading a book. He still operates his company with my uncle as his right-hand man. All of it without even finishing high school. Appreciate and spend time with the elders you have around you. They have so much to teach, even it is how not to grow old. Great content Ryan, keep it up!

"You cant heal what you don't feel. So don't medicate. Don't medicate. Heal."
As an admittedly self-medicator, I felt that really deeply...

When I forgive I release any resentment that I held.
No resentment, no drama, no more past experiences dragging me down.
    Forgiveness set me free.

Edith did a beautiful job of imparting her wisdom, while facing the ignorance and at some stages rudness of this young man.

Thank you Ryan for all you do and freely share with us the public. I never knew what stoicism was until I stumbled upon a CZcams video of you sharing. The obstacle is the way is one of my favourite books now. Because I’m not a big reader, your audio book was a blessing and a big help.
    Thank you again!

*11 Stoic Traits I Wish I Knew In My 20s:*
    1. Take a short term loss in order to have a 5-10 year play
    2. Will look for one quality woman
    3. Alpha by own definition (you set your own rules, guidelines, etc.).
    4. The real troubles (hell) these men go through, but others won't know it. Ability to weather the storm.
    5. Intimacy becomes Child's play and a crutch. This is many men's Achilles heal.
    6. Consider legacy. Name, reputation and legacy are the only things men have.
    7. Wealth accumulation is used for an internal strategy for comfort, not for an external validation of the world. Only comes when playing the long game.
    8. Focus on skills NOT focus on the hours.
    9 Talent finds you.
    10. Nothing scares you.
    11. Strong ability to control all sorts of different urges (from drinking, smoking, dirty websites to nail-biting/nail picking) - if you relapse. Learn and study everything to control your mind… (or it controls you = NOT GOOD).
Take it easy and I hope you found one thing helpful in this list.

It's good to see you back. You've had a challenge to overcome. I pray you continue healing. Going to church and family meals around the table together are important for many reasons. But sadly too many families don't do this today. It would be great if those things can become family priorities again. I enjoyed your video and I am looking forward to more in the future.

Nothing but the highest level of respect for you Edith. When you mentioned the guards putting children in the ovens alive I had to stop watching, especially as the father of an 8 year old. Overwhelmed by emotions. Everything else pales in comparison. That you lived through all that and to be the positive and powerful person that you are is just incredible.

Agreed, it saddened me, he missed much of her wisdom and at times looked completely disinterested, telling her, rather than listen to her. She did a great job of gliding through this, with grace and dignity. That in itself was a wisdom for those who can see it.

Your question about covit to this special lady (21.00) gives the impression that you should learn a little more, before you dismiss millions of people as 'selfish' bc they first question the authorities. It seems to me that you are quite influenced by today's 'mass' manipulators in the governments. At this point (21.00) you are talking completely past each other. She mentioned Alice Miller's books and how authorities (of all kinds, including parents) play with fear and threats, in order to divide and rule, just to get their own ways! Its not that boy who disobeys to wear a mask who is 'selfish', thats what authoroties love you to think! The lady wisely didn't go into it, but recommended her books to you. What else could she do..
