    I forgot to mention that in the story “Winter’s King”, Le Guin uses the pronoun “she” for all Gethenians, a switch from Genly Ai’s report in Left Hand.
    “Coming of Age in Karhide” has more detail on Gethenians in kemmer. Neither story is essential to the plot of Left Hand, but each adds to the world.

    I really like the way you pointed out how the book manages to encase its heady, profound themes in a story that is first and foremost about characters. This seems like a relatively rare thing in sci-fi, and it's one of the many reasons Le Guin will always be a favorite of mine.
    I had never heard of the Snow Queen, but it sounds fantastic. I've added it to my list.

      Thanks, Jordan! There are books in each genre that really transcend whatever connotations we like to group them with, and Le Guin achieved something special with her best works. I hope your weekend is starting well.

    Great video Jack! The book really is about the Tao and finding balance. For Genly Ai (eye) to unlearn what he knows and see the duality of what it means to be human. He finally understands after his arduous journey that a whole being is both masculine and feminine and so when his team members arrive they seem odd and unnatural to him. There are so many great moments to unpack and I marveled at the lessons that Le Guin was able to fold in to the narrative.

      @ramblingraconteur1616  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind words! “Balance” is an apt way to describe Genly’s realization. That moment you describe when he is uncertain, almost uncomfortable, around his fellow humans was one we discussed in our reading group. There are so many interesting and special moments that the book takes us to. I hope your weekend is starting off well!

    Good quote selection at 9:20. I have this one 101 philosophy book that I know has a section that talks about is there a gender in the mind and I’d want to go back and read some of that to combine w this novel almost.
    I’d almost want a Fall or Spring that lasts for years. Sometimes I’m mad when fall or spring is over in 5 days in Indiana

      Thanks, Una! There is plenty to explore with gender and perception in Left Hand. A rereading might take a totally different route and just go into the Ice Age environment, such a great world and narrative!
