Cara Armstrong If local thrift stores are a problem, there are many online second hand shops like Poshmark just to name one. Kelly said she sells on Poshmark! They’re nice pieces for a fraction of the price. It’s not much more expensive than Wish (comparing similar styles), and it could be much cuter and higher quality.
Thrifting is not for everyone all the time. Not everyone has the luxury of time. Not everyone benefits from an availability of certain articles of clothing they need in their size.
Even with online thrifting, not everyone has access to the technology. All of these are obstacles to people prioritizing survival in a capitalist society. It's not that hard to admit that not everyone is privileged enough to accomplish ethical goals under capitalism. To assert otherwise is ignorant. If you know, you know. If you don't, then take the time to educate yourself on the hardships of others and hold those in power accountable for the cruelty they orchestrate. Depop is not the solution.
VainHarmony Agreed. Thrifting is not for everyone, but it’s hardly inaccessible for middle class people. If you’re in a less than ideal place and need to pick up a Walmart something or other, that’s /fine/. My position is just that for people who can give up some convenience for ethics, do it. If not, buy the Walmart shirt that’ll help you work a job that’ll put food on the table. I don’t see why both our statements cannot mutually exist.
The responsibility for fixing the environment needs to be pushed more on the companies, not the consumer. Even if we all shopped sustainably most of the time, that effect is nowhere near what it could be if the corporations stepped up and did their part to make a difference. We should focus our energy shaming companies instead of individual people.
Exactly. Like, I get the whole shtick about "if we all stop buying X product then there will be an impact" but the fact of the matter is we won't ALL stop buying that product for any number of reasons, some of which are what Kelly mentioned in her video: money. Shopping sustainably, ethically, organically etc IS a luxury that many people cannot afford, especially in these unprecedented times we're going through. I can stop buying h&m and using plastic straws all I like but if the majority of people do not and cannot, my impact will be non-existent.
I highly disagree with this. Should companies be ethical and sustainable? Absolutely. But they wouldn’t make any money if the masses weren’t buying their products. We vote with our dollar every day, and acting like we don’t make a difference is just an excuse to be lazy
Virginia Sosa completely agree. Putting pressure on these companies is needed, but taking away what they need (read: our dollar) plays a massive role. We need to push each other to do better and be better. ✊🏼💖 If anyone is looking for some great sustainable shopping apps: Depop (streetwear, vintage and designer), Vestiaire (all things designer and bougie in excellent condition), Good on You (a search engine that tells you exactly how sustainable any brand is), Vinted (UK), and Poshmark (US). 🌍💚

No one needs to shame anything or anyone but we have to face reality. Companies will never have an incentive to change if they can count on your dollar regardless. Consumers using their money as a political tool is the most practical way straightforward way to make change. Lord knows we can’t trust govt to take care of these issues.
Your transparency about your CZcams earnings is admirable. Not many Creators will tell you the entire truth. You’re one of a kind and deserve all the happiness genuinely.

Yeah I'm kind of crazy and staying busy is a way of coping. I've been resting though and will schedule my next video in advance to get away this weekend to be at peace.

@@rubyjay5864 He's been sick with dementia for over a year and I first had to mourn him fading away into complete confusion. Now I have to mourn him physically not being around. He really was my best friend as a kid. I'm just relieved he cannot suffer anymore. On another note, it pushes me to keep doing whatever I feel like doing because tomorrow is never promised as I've said before in a video.

İ mean she still shops quite a bit. İt seems like she cycles out her wardrobe pretty frequently. She's not consuming less necessarily just throwing out/giving away things more frequently than most people. Being a minimalist doesn't automatically mean you're more sustainable.

I'm so so happy she mentioned this in her video! I'm truly a broke college student (not even joking. Financial aid and all) and I always have people around me (on instagram and so on) pressuring people to "boycott brands if they're not sustainable" or shame people for shopping from them. Idk maybe if these sustainable and ethical brands didnt cost a fortune I'd probably shop there. Sis is on a budget!!! I dont get how people dont understand shopping at these brands is truly a privilege.

@@PLuna-gf6sh yeah there are those but im fearful of buying secondhand anything cuz covid ;-; (even tho thats prob unreasonable but the fear is still there :/). Plus thredup can still be...up there in pricing. When I say I'm broke I go full on discounts only/clothes better be under $20 a piece (which $20 is already pricey) or its gonna severely wound my bank account. Thanks for the suggestions tho!
Thrifting is better than buying sustainable. There are enough clothes on the planet fabricated to fulfil everybody’s needs if only we learned how to swap them between ourselves and reuse them

We have this back in my home town. We put used clothes we dont want anymore in a big bag and than someone picks it up. They pick out what they like and put in what they dont like anymore. Someone comes pick it up and so on.
I need to get into thrifting as well. Simple clothes for everyday use will go a long way, and they don't hurt your wallet compared to $50+ clothing pieces that are just like anything else. :/

Just thought i'd say that I remember seeing you first when you had very few subscribers, something like a few thousand or so. You were in a car talking about some date you had in NYC. You were hilarious! Something about your timing and the straight face even when you're saying something ridiculously funny. It seems very old school "British" really. Maybe thats why it stood out. Losing someone you're so close to like a parent is so hard. I know when I lost my grandmother a few years ago (she lived with us for quite a while and was basically another parent figure), I didn't deal with it because I told myself that everyone needed me to be strong and help them deal with everything. While I don't necessarily regret that choice, it is taken me years longer to deal with that grief and loss than I think it would have otherwise. Take care of yourself, and never be afraid to maintain your boundaries around that grief. And don't let other people (especially random strangers on the internet such as myself!) tell you how to process or feel.
Thanks for the advice and sorry to hear about your grandmother! The grief comes and goes. The day he passed was the worst day of my life. the following days were even worse because I was inundated with paperwork and closing out his financials. I'm still doing that work and there are many loopholes and missing things. I noticed that staying busy today and filming a couple of video helps me not get too depressed, but I will certainly take a break if needed soon. The good thing about youtube is that I can film a lot in advance, take a break and just upload back to back when I feel up to it.
I applaud you. I lost my dad and also felt the need to continue with my CZcams recording. You remind me of my nieces and some of my former students. I guess it's time for the uncle to learn from the niece. Thanks Kelly.

I earn more ad revenue than most people with my subscriber amount because I get a LOT of views and have high watch time, which leads to youtube recommending my videos more often. It's not necessarily about the sub count, more about views...however with sponsors CPM and sub count matters. After chatting with a lot of bigger youtubers I come to realize they stop putting out normal content and only post when sponsored because they get paid $20k+ for a POST.

Just found your channel about a month ago, and you could easily say I've been swept into the "stampede" 😂. Your ability to just genuinely be yourself in front of a camera is so refreshing. I actually got emotional when you mentioned your dad, I had two close friends that both lost their dads within the past year and I can't imagine what you're going through. The fact that you were able to push forward and create a video so soon after, only three days later, shows some real strength and dedication. It's no wonder why you've had such success on this platform.

I DO think there's a difference between trying to be eco-friendly and failing sometimes because of finances, and not caring about being eco-friendly and blaming the decision on finances. Not shaming anyone, just pointing out the difference. There are certain companies that I KNOW had/has horrible practices that I refuse to purchase from, but I only know that because they were exposed for it. Kudos to the people that do research to see where their clothes are being made. I don't feel like doing that, lol. Is it impossible for me to do that? No. WILL I do it? Also, no, but that's a decision I'm owning.

Cheap clothing was being discussed on the TV today in the UK as well and thing is when it comes to clothing and even food that is ethical the price goes up by a ton. Everyone would make the switch if it was cheap, but it's not. My family can't afford that lifestyle and we are pretty average, so unless you have a high income you cannot be expected to pay those prices. I would love to do my part, but the industry betrays itself.

As long as my video gets high views in the first 8 hours and and gets clicked on often, it'll go to the front as usual. CZcams is rooting for me (literally go to their instagram 😅) I am resting though, I recorded a couple of videos today to schedule out in advance so I can just relax and focus on healing.
