  • 2023 is almost here, and I thought this was the perfect time to talk about the Roman god of January, Janus. This god has a unique form and function in Roman religion, without a Greek equivalent. I also touch on when the Romans celebrated their new year and some of their new year customs. Thanks for watching!
I mostly relied on Book 1 of Ovid’s Fasti for this episode. You can find a decent translation here: www.poetryintranslation.com/P...

this is a fascinating video! i gotta watch it again. i really love the very first image of the calendar made of rows and columns of letters, i even took a snapshot of it to study later. it is the best roman calendar i've seen, they are usually worn down and difficult to read. thank you for all your time & research.

Thanks for watching! Yes, Janus is sorely underrepresented on the internet but he's SO interesting!
