I played this game and loved it! I even played without the Big Shells for defense and attack and still loved the challenge. I love this game and PRAY PRAY PRAY PRAY for a sequel.

Already 12 hours in so I'm going to complete this week. Great remaster of an already GREAT game, probably in my top 3 from the SNES era right there with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI.
What it "lacks" in story and other RPG elements it more than makes up in the fun/humor department.
My only "complaint" remains the difficulty. It was already easy on the SNES and the remaster it's even easier due to the splash damage even if you decide to not use "super team skills" like I'm doing.
100% recommended to RPG fans and maybe the best one to get new people into the genre if they are not familiar with it or are too young to start with more "adult" rpgs.
Mario RPG + Mario Wonder = what a year for Mario, and if you add Sea of Stars to the mix then you have an amazing trio of "retro games".
I still own the original for the snes and have finished the game more times than I can count.
Preordered a physical copy of the remake and am about half way though the game and I love it as much as I did the first time I played the original.
I think the worst thing anybody could say about this remaster is that it's too easy. But that's the thing, it's not meant to be a difficult RPG. It's meant to be a fun, light-hearted game. And I think the amount of people we're seeing that are praising it who've never played it before is testament that it's just a well-designed, solid game. I remember playing Chrono trigger very shortly after playing Mario RPG. This was before the 2000s and I'll be honest. I felt like I enjoyed Mario RPG more and had fonder memories of it. You don't need a difficult or complicated experience to have a good time.
Yeah, I'm not sure if you are talking specifically about the review but I said it was simple in terms of gameplay mechanics rather than easy. I agree though, difficult doesn't automatically mean better. Glen

I mean, to be fair, (spoilers incoming), you do get a chance to fight harder variance of the bosses, including Mr. Final Fantasy reference. Which, by the way, he gets a cool new form.
Yes, it was short and not very difficult but it was so cute and it's not a bad thing to not die all the time in this game.
I never played the original and purchased this last Friday. I played all weekend and plowed through this game. It’s amazing and was one of the best gaming experiences of the year for me. Interested in how the original holds up.
Squaresoft was an a amazing company
I grew up with the original and it's one of my favorite games of all time. The remaster is very faithfully done, but perhaps a little easy. On the original, I always die at least once about halfway through (even today on a replay), but not so on the remaster. Maybe I just grinded more this time around, but on the original you couldn't dodge enemies' magic attacks at all and I suspect that's where the difficulty change came in.
Aside from that, really the only differences I noticed are some changed names/dialogue (Toadstool to Peach, Koopa Troop to Bowser's Minions, timed hits to action commands, stuff like that), and the action command combo thing and gauge are both new as well. Plus you couldn't swap party members mid-fight in the original.

Just beat it this morning. I cried. It's so goddamn good. I felt like I was 12 again.
Just recently beat this. Never played it on SNES but it was my best friends favorite game back when he had this on SNES. So since it was his favorite game, I instantly got it. I see why he loved it so. So charming and adorable and funny too, one line Bowser said got me. 😂
Ive never played this, and i regret it. I'm pretty interested in giving it a try now, always wait for the switchup review.

I was 15 when this came out on snes. Loved it back then and already picked up and finished the remake lol.
No need to regret it as you are now in the enviable position of experiencing it for the first time.
I never played it either, playing it now and enjoying it.
Literally reminds me of an old school JRPG with Mario characters (it is) and charm almost like Wizard of Oz or something haha.
I saw the ads for Super Mario RPG in a magazine (good old times...), I could not believe that a game could look so good. It impressed me so much that I dreamt about it for days, imagining what it would play like!
I now have a SNES Mini and might play it there, but the idea of finally getting to own it physically (albeit with a terrible cover art) might make me take the plunge.

Loved this as a kid and bought the SNES mini to be able to play it and ffvi again. Really happy that those that haven't had a chance to play it get to experience such a fantastic game in a lovely remastered package

The nostalgia is there all the way. I played it when i was a kid on the SNES and this remake is phenominal and preserves all elements of the original game while adding the special abilities during battle

Before the Switch is replaced with its successor I would not mind a Mario & Luigi Superstar remaster/remake collection. This and Link's Awakening prove it can be done well.
This game absolutely blew my mind as an 11 year old. I think it is the game that got me into RPGs. It was really hard to find a copy, but occasionally there was one at a rental store. I remember renting it a few times over several weeks. It made me fall in love with the RPG genre. My cousin randomly surprised me with the remastered version and I'm really looking forward to going back to my childhood for a short time.

This game brings so many memories. I was a young kind who didnt have money for a snes, so I would watch the video game shop owner play this from outside. Finally got a chance to play via snes emulator down the road. Picked this up last night and it's been a blast.
Pretty nice, I can’t wait for the 1000 year door remake. It looks like it will be really good and hopefully we won’t have to wait another year for it haha

4:53 That Dry Bones enemy is my go-to for grinding / leveling up my party members.
A ten hour game like this is perfect! Not every RPG needs be 40+ hours.

Also, having Luigi replace Mario as the star would be pretty damn cool. Maybe even getting Mario as a playable party member later in the game?
Watching Luigi do the same silent routines Mario did in RPG would be a treat. I'll be it a little bit more nervous

I read that it could be as low as 10 hours, or maybe even stretched out to 15 hours depending on your play style.

Great review as always, guys, thanks. I finished Mario Bros. Wonder and got this on release day. Really enjoying it so far even if it is on the simplistic side. Visuals are gorgeous on the OLED, and actually I think it's refreshing to play an rpg that's relatively short.
I recently finished the game, even went through all the secret super bosses. Loved it a lot!

Me and my friends rented this when it was new on SNES. At the time we hated the turn based system. I eventually got really big into FF so I’m definitely going to give this another chance…27 years later.

For me I also seemed to want to get the massive rpg with hundreds of hours of game play BUT never actually get round to finishing them. Having recently purchasing and finishing Star Ocean First departure in about 20 hours I realise the length of the game isn’t the be all end all especially if I never finish them.
Played this game back when it came out (I was 15 at the time) and loved it back then. Got this at midnight on the day of release and devoured it. Beat the Culex rematch yesterday. Chef's kiss.
I played the original back on the Wii Virtual Console but never managed to beat the last boss (I got stuck in a hit-heal loop where I wasn't levelled up enough to hit it hard enough, but I was levelled up enough to withstand its attacks). I loved what I played though, and am looking forward to play it again in improved form!
Everyone reviews it as a simple game, not hard, just good fun. I might try it.

Wow the quality of life changes are insane compared to the original
Mario RPG was my absolute favorite game growing up, and still is my favorite game. I wished for years that they would remaster it for a different system since its so insanely expensive to buy it for super Nintendo now. I wasnt sure if the improved graphics on switch would make it lose the nostalgia feeling to me, but seeing your review makes me want to buy it after all. Thank you :)

I was excited for this remake as my first console was the GameCube and never got to play it, but after watching your sea of stars review and this one in the same day, sadly I think it'll have to just go to the backlog.
I never got the chance to play the original, since we skipped from the NES to N64 in my home growing up. I'm really enjoying the game so far. The graphics look terrific, and I enjoy the bits of humor and the personalities of different characters. The timing can be a bit tricky for the extra attack/defense boosts during battle, but it's not too bad. Overall, I'm having a blast (at least, whenever I can drag myself away from Astral Ascent... seriously hoping you guys cover that one!).

Back in the day this went out to be a great foundation for the first paper mario games. This looks like a really good and proper remake. I hope the same love is being put into the Thousand Year Door.

I never played the original back in the day but picked this up anyway. I’ve been enjoying it a lot! It’s quite easy but it’s also a very cosy game, like all Mario games are.
Bought this instead of the 1k year door as I do own a copy of it for the gamecube and it still looks great on wii.
the SNES visuals have not aged as well as the 1k year door did and I have a bit more nostalgia for Super Mario RPG.

If it is your first time it will definitely take longer than 10 hours. For me I have played it so many times and go way past 10 hours to beat it. I don’t know how people do it tbh. I’m at 11 hours and haven’t even reached close to the end

It's a wonderful remake with a solid visual upgrade and added modern touches like QoL improvements , a beastiary, and a journal to keep track of the story so far. I believe there is also an optional challenge mode with harder bosses for players who wishes to try it.
There's something to be said about a game that doesn't overstay its welcome, not every game needs to be 100+ hours. I would complete more RPGs if more games were like SMRPG

My verdict is that it's insanely faithful. Not that it's a bad thing, but I just wanted more thongs to do.
The inclusion of a casual mode and no veteran or hardcore mode for people who played this years ago bothers me.

I have a question for those who have played it. Is the game really adventure-based? Or, like an explore worlds type game? Such as Super Mario 3D World? I’m hesitant on trying this game, I’ve never played this style game before. Is it mainly “battling”? Thanks in advance 😊
An unrelated comment, but I was wondering if you guys will maybe do an all patched up vid on the Borderlands 3 update that released today? I'm downloading it now and also looking at the patch notes on their webpage and it is a massive update that looks like it might address a bunch of the issues its had up to this point (hopefully fixes a lot of the crashing) and has quite a lot of qol improvement listed as well

It was my favorite on the SNES, it's my all-time favorite Mario game, and it takes the top spot as my GOAT. Needless to say, it's a winner in my book and far superior to Mario Wonder, in my opinion, for recent Mario releases. It was a Day 1 physical pickup for me, and I'll even pony up the cash for a Collectors Edition if they ever choose to make one!!!
I think I will play this after Sea of Stars which will arrive in January together with Bayonetta: Origins' soundtrack. 😊
This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Personally don't care for the new look, but happy to see it come back for more people to play. Bowser was my MVP.
Being a 80s baby grew up on super nintendo , which was my first owned console ,this game i never play it ,i have it now on nintendo switch i play 15 mins of it and i can say it going to be good through out the whole game . I did owned chronos trigger and that is another legendary super nintendo RPG game made by squaresoft or enix
Just completed this game today really enjoyed it still got some more end game boss to do wish this game was abit longer didnt want it to end loved the different characters in the game wish they where in other Mario games too .Never got to play it when i was younger as never came out in the uk dont think its worth £50 lucky got it for £27 with the poster too
hopefully the armaggeddon fanmade hard mode mod will come to this game in 10 years or so lol

👍 I think Nintendo did a great job on this Remastered remake of Super Mario RPG. I played the original when it first came out in the 90's. It was and still is one of my all time favorite games on the Super Nintendo along with Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2. I hope Nintendo will do Remastered remakes of both of those games for the Switch too.

Played the original on wii ca 15 years ago, bought this day 1 and finished in about 12 hours including postgame but not 100%
Still a great game and the grpahical changes and additions look gorgeous.
Also still the funniest iteration we had of MArio with exception of M&L mario maybe.
Amazing Game and always fun!
STILL: The fact that they made it even easier and the 60 buck price tag on an (albeit upgraded) ~ 10 hour "retro" game.
Leaves a tiny sliver of dissatisfaction mixed with the overall happiness.

The game looks beautiful.
I am loving the game, but I have to disagree about the controls. I do not feel they are as responsive as they should be. Running off platforms because jumps didn’t fire was the most noticeable for me.
Super Mario RPG was a masterpiece on the Super Nintendo but I'm skipping out on the remake because it doesn't offer anything new. If Nintendo plans to make sequel, the remake is worth it. Otherwise, it should of been on the Switch online.
This sounds like it would be something I would enjoy compared to the traditional platformer.

I’m really enjoying it. But I do have to say I don’t know if it’s worth $60. It could’ve definitely be more appealing in that $40 range like Metroid prime remastered.
If it's a great game, which it is, then it definitely is worth the $60. Not wanting to pay the $60 and wanting to pay less is another thing.

Didn't buy it. Looks great but the lack of challenge in Mario games are becoming a problem for me. People say "well it's not dark souls!!1" but I guess they're too young to remember when the old Mario games did still present some challenges.
We may have gotten this back in the day, but you lot got Terranigma and we didn’t.
Im hoping that Terranigma can make a return someday, would love a "collection of mana" style compilation alongside soul blazer and illusion of Gaia.
