  • How to test the evaporator fan in your refrigerator. If this fan is not running, your refrigerator will not cool.
The fan in the freezer is what forces the air down to the refrigerator compartment. If the fan is not running food in the freezer will not freeze and the food in the refrigerator section will not get cold.
This video will show you how to test the resistance of the fan and also how to check it for proper voltage.

shouldnt you explain what's a good ohms reading and what's a bad one? like what it means if it's too low or too high?

What should be the resistance reading if it's a 12v DC motor, which is what mine has?

    Hi, Bill,
    I like your video!
Please add one more check point at the very beginning: Determine what voltage rating of the fan motor, then proceed with either 120V or 12 DC. They are not universal and not compatible with each other.
    Thanks for uploading the video.

After the ohms test, you should also test the leads to the metal body of the motor, in case the windings are shorted to ground. When you test run it with 110v, put wire nuts on the wire ends, to make a good connection, and plug the cord into a power strip, so you can switch off the power quickly in case there is a problem.

Thanks fir video - I thought evap fan motor was bad on basement 20yr old fridge - I saw it not running when checked couple days after bad lighting storm came through - We lost power for 24hrs for down trees - I think might have had surge as some ground fault or arc breakers trip- Compressor condeser fan runs. Maybe there's circuit board somewhere I dont have any paperwork / diagrams - I thought being 20yr old probably just had defrost timer? Guess have to investigate some more- Thanks for making video- Just an old hillbilly shade tree type trying to save couple dollars-

i have a weird problem with the evaporator fan in the Amana refrigerator. I turn fridge on and the evaporator cools well and ice starts to form as expected cuz the door is open but the fan will NOT run. I noticed the defrost thermostat is attached to the cables that control the power entry to the fan. IF I bypass the cable that goes to the thermostat the fan works, IF I connect as it was the fan will NOT operate. Do you think it may be a bad defrost thermostat? I do not know
how to test the thermostat...I dont have a voltage meter. THanks for your reply. Roberto. in Miami.

I tested my fan and I am getting 30 ohms but it keeps dropping to about 15ohms I think eventually it will goto 0 but I did not wait... does this mean my evap fan is bad ? I see when you test your fan its at 97ohms and sometimes even 100ohms and it should not go down ? will the control board stop a half working or almost dead fan from starting and thus giving me a error code..67 on temp display panel: failure of BLDC fan motor at freezing compartment , poor motor , hocking to wires of fan, contact of structures to fan. snapping or short lead.. I see the evap fan run during startup and about few mins in and it will stop completely and thru the code 67.

I have a Whirlpool freezer model ev171nyms04, it's icing in the grill area and the fan motor not running. I checked the evaporator fan motor it looks to be bad when I test as show in your video using the volt meter omes setting. I have two question:
    1. How can I ensure there is nothing else is wrong?
    2. Fan motor for this model is about $100. Can I use any other freezer evaporator fan motor with the same voltage that is cheaper?
    Thanks,

My fan just stopped this evening without any noise or signs it was going. I see when the fridge starts the fan does a tiny jump then nothing. I checked the wires going to it and 122 volts ac. I check the continuity of the motor and 0L, so I then checked the ohms of the motor where it is measuring around 2.2-2.4 megohms.

  • @Zanenoth

You cannot easily test new fans they are 12 Volt and have 3 pin connector with some electronic board inside the fan. The only reason they replaced the old fan with this new fan is that old fan costs 20 $ while new fan costs 160$ .all comes from consumer pocket.

So I have a fridge, The freezer is ice cold fridge wasn't. I had some ice build-up in the channel that lead to the fridge. After clearing the build-up out, I can now feel air going into the fridge. But after 8 hours the temperature of the fridge has only gotten down to 50Degrees, does it normally take this long to cool down ?

I have an old fridge that has problem with defrosting! I have to shut it down and manually defrost it every 2 weeks or so, and I was thinking if I modify it by removing the defrost components (they are useless anyways in my case) and and wire the fan directly to the mains in order to make it working constantly even if the compressor is off! will that help to reduce the over freezing? because there will be constant air pushing which may help melting the ice! I know I will still need to manually defrost it from time to time, what I am hoping is to do it every 3 weeks for example instead of every 2 weeks! will keeping the fan on all the time help? thanks

I have a GE bottom freezer double door refrigerator, model # GFMS5HFFA SS and I'm trying to determine if I need to buy a new evaporator fan. I have noticed that the refrigerator section warms up because the fan in the freezer is not blowing cold air up. It'll work fine for 5 or 6 days and then stop working. I should note that the freezer continues to stay cold and works fine.
The weird thing is that the problem comes and goes. I have determined that If I unplug the fridge for a few hours and plug it back in the fan works fine and cools down the refrigerator and both the freezer and refrigerator function as designed...and will sometimes work fine for several days and then suddenly the refrigerator is warm again...because that little fan in the bottom is not going.
My question is if the evaporator fan goes completely it probably wouldn't fail and then start working fine after a period of rest. Are these fans known to work for several days and then suddenly stop? Or do they just go completely? I don't want to spend more than a hundred dollars on a new fan if the problem lies in the control board or thermostat. I do not have the expertise to check those parts...but I can quickly and easily change out the evaporator fan...if, in fact, it is gone.

You have power after you plugged it in to AC Power source, therefore your reading is your power source not your fan

tip of the day, don't touch the multimeter leads with your fingers when doing a measurement. Your body has some resistance and will not give you an accurate reading this way, it's a small increase on the reading....but, now you know....

What could we check to get the freezer colder? It isn't making ice either anymore. Thanks! We really like your helpful videos!

Not recommended, but you take yer jumper cables from the truck, jack a conductor into both prongs of a 120volt outlet, connect that to the fan. If she runs she’s good. If ya got a big blue spark, that whole mess is gonna catch on fire if ya don’t trip the breaker.
