Sorry, I understand that you’re an artist...I do commissioned painting, so I get that...but, if someone doesn’t like details about what you show them, they are the ones wearing it for the rest of their lives. They have the right to change ANYTHING they want.
They didn't say they didn't have a right to or couldn't. Cant tell you how frustrating it is though changing a stencil, redrawing, going through a lot of supplies over and over when in reality the customer should've realized they are getting something for the rest of their lives and either think a little bit harder before you scheduled, or hopefully you did some research into the artist and trust them.
Eden Lulic I do understand, and I like to think that people put some thought into the artist and what they want beforehand...I know a majority don’t, and that’s just stupidity, but we should all know by now that most humans are complete imbeciles and we can’t trust them to brush their teeth regularly. Lol
6:35 He specifically says that he has a vision in his head, they trust him, but they don’t like the look and want to change a color. He says it builds a bad relationship with the artist and they should trust what is in his head. I get that it’s annoying, but it is forever for that person, and if the artist doesn’t get the vision that corresponds with the customer’s, then maybe it should be built in layers, or be prepared for modifications.
The guy that does most of my tattoos builds the lines, detail, and color on (I guess it’s transfer paper?) something translucent, that way I can see it in all its parts and decide where to go from there. He does brilliant work, but a lot of times we don’t exactly see the same thing at first. That’s why art is the ultimate expression of opinion.
My artist yesterday drew up A WHOLE NEW DESIGN because I just didn't like the first one! The second one was perfect. I felt really bad but he was totally chill about it. If it's on my body and I pay a shitton of money, I'm allowed to change it!!
yea but some colours will look bad, the artist is trying to get the whole tattoo to look good, some people don't have any comprehension of colour theory
That Ava J making suggestions based on personal taste is one thing, but if a client does not want that, you cannot force them to wear it forever. Art is literally an opinion. It affects no one but the person appreciating the art. In the case of tattoos, it is all individualized.
I was told my tattoos HAVE TO have an outline. There must be black lines. Nope. I wanted no black, and I get compliments by everyone that sees them. Glad I didn’t listen to the artists I first sat down with.

I have tipped before but I enjoyed the experiance and the artist was really friendly and consioderate as it was my first and i have nerve pain issues
3:59 when I was a kid my mom took me and my sister to my cousins shop so she could get tattooed, obviously we got bored but my cousin actually was really good with keeping us busy... he gave us some of his tattoo designs (probably ones he wasn’t going to use) then he gave us tracing paper and he had us trace the designs, I actually started to get more into art because of that
On the healing, I'd definitly say listen to the artist's recommendation. I've seen some people's tattoos heal horribly because they listened to their friends.
here in sweden we dont tip and i think in another country its bad some people expect a tip i mean tattoos are expensive and they might save up for it and dont have any more moneys to tip

US relation to tipping is so weird to me... Why do you charge $X if you expect a tip ? If you want more just charge more at the beginning.
Because people are also really cheap and will haggle prices no matter what.
But not every client thinks not tipping is ok. There are plenty that enjoy your work and will give an extra $20-$100

The tipping discussion is...... Still hard for me to swallow. I work for and I am a student of traditional art (classical realism) . My mentor and his circle has done commissioned work for folks with portrait paintings and more conceptual pieces. His price includes meetings, working, framing.... He doesnt ask for a tip.
A lot of tattoo artists have iincredible work so I understand pricing work as art vs. Just a random doodle .. I also get that a percentage of the money goes back to the shop... But it's the same for traditional artists ( rent or gallery percentage) .. So I still struggle with why it's expected. Almost aggressively expected. Especially peircings.- I've only been pierced No tat's- but $40 Piercing +$ 30-200/ jewelry... It takes two seconds to Install.. They're literally making $75 / not even a third of an hour. I never want to offend and really appreciated having people that really know what they are doing so I asked about tipping rules (i really had no idea but heard) and followed through. But I dunno... I still don't understand it.

@@josieblush8991 apparently you go with 10-20% of the price in America (saw this on Tattoo Amino). As a European I've experienced people responding with surprise and almost reluctance when I wanted to tip them. And since I'm pretty poor nowadays I can't afford to tip on top of the already high costs of getting a tattoo.
@@DangerRavioli I feel like tattoo prices in Europe are generally a lot higher anyway. I got a tattoo on my forearm that took about 5 hours and I paid 850 euros for it. Like hell I'm tipping when the hourly rate is already above 100 euros. :p

I went snowboarding after a long day of boarding I was like let’s go get a tattoo make sure to take a shower brush my teeth so I didn’t offend my artist with my nastiness LOL

Do it how you like. If its a long session and more difficult, sure tip more.
What do you do when different artists give you conflicting aftercare advice?
I listen to the artist everytime. I went to five different now and little Details are always a little different.
Use common sense and trust your instincts. There are several ways to heal your tattoo, so just do your research and find what works for you. If my artist tells me I need to use bepanthen, I won't listen, because my skin reacts quite badly to it and blisters and I also really dislike the greasy feel of it. So instead I like to mix up using coconut oil and air drying and that works for me very well. It took me a while (I'm on 13 tattoos now) to find a way that works for me optimally and I'm not scared to try new ointments. But one thing I always do is keep it clean, so I gently wash it when I wake up and before I go to bed, using neutral soap. Make sure to always check in with your own body and respond to its needs.
Well if you have a bunch of tattoos already just listen to them see if they have anything different to say.
Sometimes time they might say use a different healing ointment or what to do with the Saniderm bandages vs the cling wrap.
Normally, if a client has lots of tattoos, just stick to whatever has worked well for you in the past. Unless you out Vaseline or Neosporin on it, then NO.

I never released that not all tattoo shops weren't over 18 only, the only ones I've ever been too have been 18+
I want to know how many tattoo artists tip their plumber their electrician tip their tree working guy Etc. You tip waitresses because they make crap money and they're giving you a service they live off of their tips when you're charging me a $100 something an hour or more your not living off your tips and all those Services I'm talking about our customer service I want to know how many tattoo artists or tipping all of those people
Don't know why the artists play like tipping is universal when it has more to do with whether an artist has to share profit, if they're independent and/or whether they're in a country with a culture that's all about paying workers the minimum, like the USA. Some establishments pay employees well enough that tips can be insulting...just not common in greedy ass America.

it wouldn't matter. we tip on top of whatever the cost is. so if they say $400, you tip another $40. if they said $450 to start with, I'd probably still tip another $40

My tattoo artist is the shit! He ain’t high maintenance like some of the guys in this video. He gave me his number and cool with me DM’ing him. He’s one of the best artists in California and works for a premier shop in Sacramento. I always tip very well and I’ll never go to anyone else. Grateful.

Artists set their own hourly rate. They factor in their overhead (which is barely anything.) Expecting a tip is just greedy. I have tipped, if the artist went above and beyond... but it's rare.
@@toddcercone6715 Tattoo artists overhead is NOT barely anything.... their shops take a large percent, Ink isn't cheap, if you're going to a good artist they have a very expensive machine. Not to mention all the little things. Take it from an actual artist, you are wrong here buddy. People tip almost every other service job, tattoo artists deserve it too.

@@allannhughes9153 You pay for a service that the tattoo artist provides. Most are self-employed and set the prices accordingly, to include their overhead. Their "tip" should be your return patronage. A server in a restaurant is paid less than minimum wage because they make their living from tips collected... which they never claim the right amount on their taxes. The service that they render is based soley on their performance of their duties. Bad service = no tip. If I go to a restaurant to pick up a take out order... No tip. If a tattoo artist does his/her best, makes me comfortable, talks to me, gives advice... then they get a tip. If they are there zoning out to their personal music with headphones on or take several smoke breaks... no tip and no return patronage. Just don't EXPECT a tip.
We should all have the same tipping culture as Japan. It's seen as an insult if you tip there.

I’m getting my first tattoo and it’s gonna be for my childhood dog Waldo, he passed a few years ago and I wanted to get Waldo from “where’s Waldo?” But I cant think of a way to get a tattoo of him without the tattoo seeming random as fuck, you know what I mean?
Why can't I come into into the shop and ask for a consultation with an specific artists? I agree with everything else but that? That's the only way I've gotten mine done
I assume it's just an issue of somebody either being busy (tattooing, drawing, or whatever especially if they are "in demand") or not liking to feel like they are getting something dumped on them out of the blue. But I get your point.
Celia Maldonado I think it is more so for a walk-in consultation like that same day. Usually custom artists are the ones that need consultations and they are scheduled the days they are there so they are too busy to do a walk-in consultation and may be to busy with their client(which can easily be an all day project) so scheduling with them through walking in may not be viable either. Usually they schedule ahead of time for a consultation and if they’re busy that day with a client they aren’t going to have time to even make the appointment until they have more down time after they have finished for the day so it would be best to get ahold of t hem through email/fb or whatever platform that they prefer to make appointments through.

I'm not talking about demanding the attention that day but some parlors can't handle every request on their social media or email. So I prefer to go, at least have a word with an assistant to make it easier to talk with the artist. But the way i heard this was like "dont come unless we already have it all set"... I have friends who never get their tattoos done waiting months for a reply, so that's why I don't agree with that specify point l
@@celiamaldonado7616 I get you, but some tattoo artists get in the zone while tattoing, they preffer to keep their minds in the tattoo and the person that's getting it so they don't like getting the distraction, most of the times is better to email, DM either the studio or the artist to check if you can drop by to get a consultation and if they never answer well, maybe getting it with another artist or another studio that actually see's their economycal activity as a service provider.

Ok wait they should interview ppl who are getting tattooed. How many times have friends of mines told me that the tattoo artist. Personal hygiene was horrendous. A lot of tattoo artist spend all day at the shop and they themselves will develop body odor. Or have the worst bad breath in the world. You guys are corny because you never interview people who have gotten tattooed by unprofessional people. Nowadays everybody is a tattoo artist.
yes exactly! I luckily had a lot of lovely artists, but one of them smoked and came back in after a cigarette and just went back to work without washing their hands first. Sorry, but when you're going to be touching a client who has what's basically an open wound on their arm, then make sure your hands are nicotine free. Also they really stank from it, so that's very much unpleasant.
Evelyn Guyt you absolutely correct. And these episodes only focus on customers being the problem. When a lot of time it’s also the tattoo artist who can also lack manners. Also a lot of tattoo artist are very nose up in the air. When they wouldn’t be in business if it wasn’t for customers

If you go to a restaurant and your bill is 400 dollars you still tip 15-20%. Theres a reason tips are percentages and not a base amount. More expensive product more expensive tip

What depends on who is getting tattooed. Sometimes I will try to talk to clients and they're not really in to having a conversation. Or they come with a friend and they'd rather talk to the friend then the artist.
So at that point I normally just stay quiet, but sometimes if the person is willing to talk then I will continue speaking.

Tipping annoys the fuck out of me. You choose your price give yourself a tip in your price. If you tell me the piece is $300 then I’m giving you $300 if I come back that’s your tip.

I don't think pain meds make your blood thin like alcohol does. Waiting on my artist to meet me one night for some color. He was over an hour late, there was a bar 50 feet from the shop. Oops! Bled like a stuck pig. Have taken prescribed narcotics before getting tattooed and saw no bleeding difference.
They weren't specific but they mean painkillers as in NSAIDs, which really most people don't know the difference even though they should. So NSAIDs: Ibuprofen, Advil, Alieve, Voltaren, etc. etc.; do thin the blood ie. slow clotting time. This is also the reason why you're not suppose to take any of these before any kind of surgery.
Now straight up Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a completely different class of drugs and does not thin the blood making it perfectly fine to take.
Saying you taken prescribed narcotics doesn't mean a thing unless you can remember what was. For example Toradol (ketorolac) and Voltarn (Diclofenac) are just some of the many strong prescription only NSAIDs that will make you bleed like a stuck pig.
All in all it depends on the class of drugs you are taking and it's important to know what you're taking cause if I had a penny for every time I've stopped some one from overdosing themselves or causing an adverse reaction cause they thought all painkillers were the same then I'd could pay off my student loans and quit my job.
I’ve been on opioids for 5 yrs because of an injury and have had a few tats didn’t bleed at all or just a tiny bit!

I've been under pain management care for numerous years due to multiple spinal injuries. I'm not going to assume they meant anything specific as they weren't specific. I commented because the medications I'm , have not caused any bleeding and I thought it worth mentioning.

Smelly individuals, bad breath, foot order, hard day at work, is there a place they can wash-up, give them gum, and or mouth wash, I mean it's one thing to come in and you are a bit off, but even a doctor will give you a chance to wash up if needed. Just be professional about it, good customers will comply. Thank them for doing so. No one wants you to be distracted when doing such a thing. I think it is professional of you to do so. So much bacteria on skin, you do not need to grind that in. That is what causes the smell. Really folks be polite to those that work for you, they will give you better service in the long run.
I never thought about tipping the artist, but goodness You should. Just like you would tip a hair stylist, your painters, the people that serve your food.
Would it help if you have a web site for your shops, a questionnaire to help individuals form their thoughts, about locations, color, size. What ever else you want to have an answer to. Also give a length of time they would be expected to sit. First tattoo, or is it the 15th one they have. Let them see a care after the tattoo is given. I would of never thought that a swim in the pool would damage the work, or fade it out.
Quick question, can you shower the next day, or you going to be smelly for a couple of weeks? I know NOTHING about these things care.
Artists don‘t take tips. They set the price for their work and that‘s it. If you want more money, raise the price. I‘m not gonna tip you anything.

@@simplyrob8812 LA is ALWAYS super expensive. I have 16 tattoos and have paid maybe $2500 (I tip) for all of them, I also live in Arizona though. I know that High Voltage has a minimum of $300. Second Chnace tattoo is pretty fairly priced though and the artists there are great.
Yeah, most studios in LA are kinda expensive, if you go to San Diego or on the little counties you might get impressed on the price difference
@Slime Bro I go to Goliath Tattoo. I've gotten most of my work done there. The minimum is $80 but you can get some beautiful stuff done. I've got a great Skeletor that was $250 (full color, almost 6in tall, great detail). I have one from Divinty, shop minimum is $100; but the color is super bright and the lines are clean as hell. Lady Luck is also nice, but a bit pricey to me.
Tipping a tattoo artist seems dumb af. I dont tip my mechanic or my electrician. Just put your overhead cost in the price.

Josie Standridge in the US, we tip from 10%-25%. 25% is for excellent service, 10% is for poor or fair service. 15% is for good.
Personally, if I’m paying $1,000 for a tattoo, I’m not paying a tip. Maybe I’ll bring a dessert or something.

Because they are performing a service. Just like a waiter, doorman, limo driver, ect. You don't have to, but it's nice when people do. You can tip convention artists too (I usually do). I always tip my artists. Most of the time, the money you spend is for materials used and the time associated with actually doing the work (the same way Convention artists price out their stuff). Tips are just extra.
If you do tip, it means you are happy with your experience. And there isn't a set amount that you tip. If you get a $300 tattoo, bit can only tip $10; it's still appreciated. I tip my artists half of the cost of my work because as an artist (not tattoo. Traditional media), I get how much time goes into it and how expensive this stuff can be.
England and the like are different because gradtuity are included in prices (for most places, I don't know how tattoo parlors outside the US handle it). So to those that have mentioned England, in most places you're still tipping; it's just already included.

like wtf bruh I couldn't leave my house if I wasn't clean,had cologne on me,clean clothes and gum in my mouth and oh yeah always groomed...
I mean yeah thats ok, but didn't you guys ever go hunting for a day or two, rule is you can't shower day before, you can't wear any deodorant. Didn't you do any construction work or something like that, you get sweaty and smell like cement all 8 hours and then go to get a burger and a 🍻 on the break. We don't have shower at our workplaces, so i go home like that by bus, and then i walk through the city. Can i do anything about it ? No i cannot. Some people don't have office jobs, some people dont have AC at the job, some people roll in dirt all day long to get couple of bucks and after the work they just want to go fucking sleep.
Some people sweat excessively, it's a condition.

@@Selene666 he didn't, he is one of the modern boys, he never chopped wood all day, he never worked at country side. I went to my grandparents village when i was little. They had a barrel full of water inside a barn, you can bathe in there once a week. And thats it. That's normal for them, we got too 'soft' and modern. Shower every morning, everyday new clothes, cologne every time you leave the house, don't eat garlic, don't eat onions, i mean fuck me if that's a healthy lifestyle -_-
