Why China Loves KFC

  • KFC is extremely popular in China - it made almost 5 billion dollars in 2017. One of the first American fast-food chains to open in China, KFC quickly established dominance over China's emerging fast food market. KFC's Chinese menu does an excellent job of adapting to local tastes, offering everything from congee (rice porridge) to egg tarts. While Americans may associate KFC with being cheap fast-food, in China the brand is perceived as high quality.

The western fast food usually label itself as “leisure food”, and they appear to be much more middle class favored with bright colors, open environments, clean and tidy fashioned and just generally modern look, that aside their food actually taste freshly cooked and has good flavor.
The KFC ppl got in North America or at least in Canada to my knowledge, almost appear as a low class food chain, just how grim and messy everything looks like. At the same time things taste like they got microwaved, and they got a tiny menu.

One thing that they didn't mention in this video is that KFC in China Also has its own breakfast menu, my favourite was a savoury rice pudding with a dipping bread that dissolved in your mouth when you eat it.
P.S. I live in area called Jiangsu province and in that area alone there were about 8 KFC's within a 10 to 30 minute radius, most of them within walking distance to each other. As for McDonald's there were about 5 in Jiangsu and only 2 Burger King.

This is pretty interesting to watch for a Chinese Chinese like me. Indeed, KFC is not quite like KFCs from the west. It's usually clean, modern and the food is usually better than it in the US. Around 2000, KFC was considered to be a treat for kids at that time. Like if you were a kid and had a birthday party in the KFC, your friends would think you are either rich or popular (or both). Nowadays, KFC is more like a meh food for young people, like if you can't really decide what to eat, or even going to watch a football game at night, you would go to KFC.
As far as I know, KFC is far more localized than any other US companies. Many people may hate the US at this point, but they would never turn down a meal in KFC lol.
I love KFC, but last time I went to one is like half years ago. Because there's just sooooo many other selections that taste better and cheaper. :) Hope you would find this comment interesting. Let me know if you have some questions regarding this topic XD

KFC is no where near a “Luxury” status in China now. It is very mid level. They do have very good localized menu. They have solid food for nice price, which makes good business. Their stores are usually 24/7, which attracts lots of homeless people, and we praise them for this social service. Actually Pizza Hut is a much more extreme example. While Pizza Hut is pretty much the same level in US, it is market as a much more upscale restaurant in China. Yes, Pizza Hut can kind of be called Luxury in China. But remember now in China a Luxury restaurant has a very high bar, something like at least 50 US dollar per meal per person, so they would never be at that level.

prices are very cheap there, you could literally feed an extra person or two with the same amount of money spent there compared to North America.
The chicken is also very tasty, so is the other menus there (drinks, burgers, fries, etc.), literally, they offer a vast array of different varieties of menus there that you can't even find here in America, like the ''Double Chicken Burger'', where the buns are replaced with big chicken pieces, with other stuff in there too.

I remembered every KFC spot in China in early yrs and to mid-2010s are all equipped with kid playing facilities, it's the most iconic western fast food brand that opened in China since 1990s, and since the day KFC spread in China itself is kidda evolving it's own way, going real far on it's creation and adoption of local cuisine into burger. I'am still missing that Sichuan Beef pentagon roll released decade ago, that experience in China's KFC really feels different to my traditional sense's "Fast Food", it more sort of feels like something like those Japanese chain western canteen brands like Saizeriya.
It's a really interesting business case and definitely worth for some more deep in analysis.

Asia really love their Fried Chicken. I tried once in China in 2010 and it has a unique taste.
In Japan, KFC is so popular that days before Christmas, people are already forming a long queue in every KFC restaurant I went to (Tokyo Area, not just the capital).

As a native Chinese, we do not see any fast food chains as “high-end” or “luxurious”. But I gotta say their spicy chicken sandwich, their wings and drums, and their fries are out of this world. I can guarantee you that their chicken sandwich is 10x tastier than the Popeyes chicken sandwich.

What this video overlooks is the symbolism of chicken in Chinese cuisine. A chicken served whole at the dinner table symbolizes prosperity, togetherness of the family, joy. A chicken with its head, tail and feet symbolizes completeness. The chicken forms part of the symbolism of the dragon and phoenix representing auspicious male-female pairing in Chinese culture. Lobster represents the dragon and chicken represents the phoenix. Also, eggs mean 'fertility'. After a baby is born, parents may give hard-boiled eggs (with the outer shell dipped in red dye) to their relatives and friends to announce the birth of their baby.
For some reason, my grandmother (originally from China) never ate beef.

@@Bjornbjornn I think so too. Her knowledge of it is limited to that time frame while she was there 10 years ago. Also I don't think they perceive it as a "luxury food"..it is affordable to the most of the masses. It doesn't have the bad reputation of fast food chains in US but I am sure people won't think of it as a luxury. LOL

The KFC in Asia is just better, I live here and everytime I see reviews of Americans about the food of KFC it feels like it doesn't match to the KFC that I'm eating here. I'm assuming the KFC in the West is just terrible but KFCs here are great. Even McDonalds here is great.

Food localization is the best job KFC have done in China, with so many variations of flavors which cater ppl from different areas in China, such as Peking Chicken Roll loved by most ppl from northern areas, and the Tender Beef Pentagon with spicy flavor preferred by ppl from Southwestern areas, and the Chicken porridge with YouTiao(fried stick) liked by ppl from southeastern areas, and the BBQ flavored Chicken leg with rice decorated with broccolis accepted by nearly all Chinese, all these localizations make KFC big success in China. I have traveled to India, Pakistan and Indonesia, finding none of the KFC stores there can provide satisfactory food for me.
