  • Early wednesday morning, it was announced that Rory Kinnear has been cast as Tom Bombadil for season two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay discussed their experience with writing the iconic character into their Second Age series.
The appearance of Tom Bombadil in season two has been long-rumored, but not officially confirmed until today. Bombadil did not appear in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings or Hobbit film adaptations, so his character may come as a surprise to fans who have not read The Lord of the Rings books.

Even if his story is bad, Rory Kinnear is such a MUST actor.

Just so long as season 2 ends with a musical episode and a Christmas special to round out the insanity.
Christopher Tolkien hated Peter Jackson’s LotR. This show would have changed his mind.

I do not mind the location change. Aragorn journeyed from Anor to Gondor and into Rhun and Harad, but Tom Bombadil did not travel around Middle-earth even once during the Second and Third Age? Sounds a bit unlikely.
PS: I just found this quote: “And _now_ he is withdrawn into a little land, within bounds that he has set, though none can see them, waiting perhaps for a change of days, and he will not step beyond them.’” (Gandalf at the council of Elrond)

Yes! I somehow missed that quote but I think it does put his wandering into more context!

As a creative writer, when there is a chance for certain liberties to be taken, you have to allow your creativity to flow. Galaderial DID show a warriors heart in the Hobbit when confronting Sauron and obliterating that Orc to save Gandalf. Now did she wield two swords and hunt Sauron for hundreds of years??? haha. I still have no problem with her character overall.
Tom being in Rhun is fascinating. Because there is a lot of ancient magic there too! Thats' where the Elves awoke. Where Orome slayed many dark beasts when the world was shrouded in night after the destruction of Almaren and the Lamps.
Those mystics and followers of Sauron where from Rhun. There's a ton of possibility by putting a primordial power like Bombadil in Rhun during the 2nd age

I agree, to be honest Rhun and the east has far more potential for original story telling and the showrunners wouldn't have to mess with the lore in the west.

As a creative writer there is a vast difference between long and short form writing. That is the larger issue that infests both RoP and Wheel of Time. Watch Brandon Sanderson’s interview about the issues plaguing both series. Some of the worst writing in any form.

Thanks for covering this! I feel pretty much the same way as you do, with similar questions about how Tom's character will be portrayed. The images show him looking rather serious, in contrast to what the quotes in the article are telling us. With Rory Kinnear in the role, I think it is in good hands and I'm looking forward to it. There's still the question of Goldberry, though.
Part of the S2 teaser trailer that seemed to feature Barrow-wights, menacing a team of five Elves led by Galadriel. Some have commented that if those are Barrow-wights, then that might be how Tom would be introduced. It culd have been a good way to explain how Elrond speaks, in the pages of FOTR "The Council of Elrond", as though he has met Tom However, now that we know Tom is in the outskirts of Rhun, then I guess Galadriel & co. will have to fend for themselves, and we might have to hope that Elrond will have some other way of meeting him.

I don't mind this version of Tom, he seems a little more 'real' than in the books. I do continue to wonder though why we've got a completely separate storyline running in the East. There's still no contact between the Hobbits/Stranger plotline and what's happening in Mordor, Numenor and Eregion plotwise. It's like watching two shows at the same time, one based on events from the books and the other entirely made up for the series.

The motivation attributed to Tom Bombadil, which is described as anti-dramatic: "When he finally crosses paths with the Stranger, you could say he has a desire to try to keep the destruction that has happened there from spreading to his beloved lands in the West. He nudges the Stranger along his journey, which he knows will eventually protect the larger natural world that he cares about."

Maybe Tom will get the Zack Snyder treatment. He will be all dark and gritty. Tom and NotGandalf will be at odds first. But than, while fighting, they realize that both their moms have the same name and become superfriends.

This is going to be even a bigger disaster than the first season. They have to be very desperate to save the series. When people get desperate they tend to sc.... everything. Good there was not much to save in the first place... was there anything good in season 1? I don't think there was anything good besides the actors doing their best with that abomination script and ideas

@@Kynokefalos Why should I do that? Because I have eyes and I can see what Amazon did with Tolkiens story? If you are one of those people who will buy everything, every crap, because it has Tolkien name put on it then try with someone who has no brains. If you want to hear only to those people who are in the same buble as you are then do it - I'm ok with that. I'm not one of those weak minded who like the Amazon series

@@wbfwbl8434 Your speech is very victimist. Arrogant and disrespectful to others, and very ignorant, your hatred has no basis, you are simply here to troll, instead you could dedicate your time to listening to the opinions of Tolkien experts, professors even, who do not speak as badly as You and they have an open mind, they know how to see the lights and shadows of the show, and they applaud what they do well, which are quite a few things.

You’re right they are so desperate that they shelled out another what £250 million for a show that nobody is watching. I mean they could have just given the Tolkien estate that money and be on their way. It’s not as if Amazon desperately needs a hit show they have a few.
We get you don’t like the show but why can’t people like you stay away I mean most people stay away from things they don’t like. I bet you were spilling your guts on the teaser trailer as well telling everyone what a flop season 2 is going to be and you hate it.
I have read the books and seen the films and I really love the show. Was it perfect nope is there room for improvement yes. But considering the appendix is there only allowed source and everything else is on a case by case basis and the second age is not a liner story I really enjoyed it. I mean it’s fantasy TV what really is the point of getting so uptight.

Oh how original, and thought provoking 😄! You don't like Rings of Power or Tom Bombadil. Tell us o wise one. How should he be written?? What are the boundaries of the "enigmatic" character??
