“We Are Entitled To Criticise Sadiq Khan Regardless Of His Religion” | Julia Hartley-Brewer

  • Rishi Sunak is facing calls to publicly address the fallout from remarks made by MP Lee Anderson after an Islamophobia row deepened on Sunday.
The former deputy chairman lost the Conservative whip after failing to apologise for claiming “Islamists” had “got control” of Sadiq Khan.
But critics including the London mayor and Tory peer Baroness Warsi have hit out at the Prime Minister for failing to explicitly condemn the comments.
Oliver Dowden earlier declined to say whether Mr Anderson’s words were racist and left the door open for a possible return to the party, prompting accusations that the remarks were not being taken seriously enough.
Julia Hartley-Brewer gives her verdict on the developing political controversy.

I disagree. When the performance artist formerly known as Yaxley-Lennon showed up with his mob of parody patriots at the Cenotaph on 11 Nov 2023 the police were dispatched to make sure they did not cause too much mischief or nuisance. Extremists dealt with as well as could be expected without infringing their right to perform.
Meanwhile, the much larger march in support of a ceasefire in Gaza also proceeded more or less peacefully.
The streets of London were kept as safe as can reasonably be expected in city of millions. If you feel the streets of London are not safe that is a pity, but some snowflakes are beyond reassurance. Try not to live your life in fear or it will only be a life half lived.

But if I can find someone organising nationwide anti-Islam (not anti-Muslim) marches, to peacefully demonstrate our love of British democracy and our British culture, I would be proud to join that march - with Union Jack held high!
As a nation, I feel we must now tone down our excessive liberalism and insist that this is Britain, our country, my country. Conform to our British ways and laws, no other imported legal system will be tolerated, or seek somewhere else if you won't, or cannot, accept this nation and it's ways.

Why should one group be beyond any criticism? Freedom of speech is an essential tenet of democracy and we should not be cowed by aggression into silence. More than ever we need to speak up for Western values and not allow bullies to silence us. Islamists may come from a culture that does not understand freedom of speech, but when they move to a western country they can't expect everything to be like where they came from.
