    I think Cruelclaw's Heist could work in the sideboard for midrange slugfests. Their plan will be the same as yours, so their best card will be your best card too. It's also a Thoughseize that can still do something in a topdeck war.

    I'm not willing to be down on Sinister Monolith until I get to play with it, because it's basically Ill-Gotten Inheritance, but you get the first trigger right away and you sac it for card advantage instead of a bigger drain...and I remember how much better that card played than it looked.

  • @barbedwire9975
    @barbedwire9975 Před měsícem +2

    The thing some of this comment section is missing about cruelclaws heist is that we already have it’s baseline mode in the form of several different cards with a 1B casting cost. And those cards aren’t unplayable but they aren’t great. I put a copy in the board of esper sometimes to help deal with legends and analyst because duress just doesn’t hit enough, but that was a specific meta call. And the difference maker for cruelclaw is I think just actively bad. Like you don’t want your thoughtseize to draw them a card even if you get a card because a card from your opponents deck probably isn’t worth it. And then the BB casting cost on top of it? At best it’s a sideboard piece for a very specific meta.

  • @whiteboysushi
    @whiteboysushi Před měsícem

    @20:38 the bad 3-mana murder is almost certainly a key synergy piece for the bat deck in draft, where the ability to trigger your "gained or lost life" effects is nice upside

  • @aetherllama8398
    @aetherllama8398 Před měsícem +1

    Season of Loss is best in show. 5 mana win the game in a self mill deck, or wrath, or both players sac 3 I draw 3. The problem with feed the cycle is you can't really play it turn 2, so it's a bad anti-aggro card.

  • @jdgarrison9913
    @jdgarrison9913 Před měsícem +4

    I think if Cruelclaw's Heist DOES end up seeing play, it's in an MBC sideboard. Maybe even sided in vs Aggro, as that's the only time it feels like it's no real downside? Aggro deck plays out their hand, or close to it. You Heist, take their best creature or burn, to smack them in the face. vs Control, you'd rather just have Duress.
    Edit: Augur seems safest in Orzhov, which hey, bat colors, so you can balance the double confident life loss with gain.
    Edit 2: I love how Lizards are essentially Outlaws. Makes Rakdos Outlaws seem like a potentially nasty deck, especially considering LJF and Hellspur Posse Boss in OTJ.

    • @sgjuxta
      @sgjuxta Před měsícem +1

      It's also really cool in 8-rack style decks, because it's a discard spell that doesn't become dead when your opponent inevitably gets empty-handed.

    Couldn’t disagree more on Cruelclaw’s Heist. The agency is the big deal here. Jim mentions giving control a card, exiling sunfall, and being left with a sunfall you don’t want. In that instance, if you know you’re fishing for a sunfall, just don’t gift them a card! That’s the beauty of the option-its floor is just pilfer, which is adequate against control. Against anything else that isnt aggro (and even sometimes then-take your opponents lightning strike and turn it around to use as a removal spell), the play pattern is youre transmuting your opponents best card into a random card from the top of the deck (that is almost certainly worse), and you’re getting their best card to use for yourself. In any sort of resource matchup, that’s a phenomenal trade. Hardly a trap card.

    • @swiftdragonrider
      @swiftdragonrider Před měsícem

      What you are saying is that is it 2 mana draw a bad card make a card in your opponent hand worse. That seems weak.

    • @codybyers2043
      @codybyers2043 Před měsícem +7

      That’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m saying it’s 2 mana take the best card, leave your opponent the worst card, and know your opponents entire hand. You are actively making your opponents hand worse and your hand better. For two mana. It’s not even that you have to take your opponents best card, you can take the best card for you too! Imagine the scenario Jim laid out-you gift the card, you see their hand, say you see Sunfall and a Three Steps Ahead in there. Obviously Sunfall is arguably the best card for your opponent, but the counter spell is the best card for you. Take the Three Steps and you can ALSO take care of the Sunfall with your handy dandy counterspell.
      If you’re presented with the option to make a bad play (I.e. take the Sunfall and be left with a boardwipe you don’t need) or a good play (take the card that your opponent values less but that you value more)… don’t make the bad play. That’s the agency.

    • @kmp101
      @kmp101 Před měsícem +1

      @@codybyers2043 In what scenario is a deck playing BB on turn 2 going to hold up counterspell? also I like the card.

    • @swiftdragonrider
      @swiftdragonrider Před měsícem

      @@codybyers2043 yea but if their hand was sunfall land before you cast the card then it was way better to just not gift and take sunfall. And if you draw them into second sunfall it is super bad. The steal aspect is quite weak as the card you are playing is basically look at 7 cards in your opponent’s deck pick one and add it to hand. Which is like the 2 mana draw one of 2 cards from your opponent decks except no flash back

    • @codybyers2043
      @codybyers2043 Před měsícem +1

      @@swiftdragonrider the edge case of drawing them into the second Sunfall is of negligible probability-besides, they’re drawing into it anyway. The comparison you make of “give them a card from their deck” is nonsensical and missing the point: a random card from their deck is better for you than a definite good card in hand, and changing your hand to be strictly better and their hand to be strictly worse with perfect information is better than a clean one for one.

Vaultborn Tyrant is pretty good, giving you two bodies, 6 life, and two cards, Hoarding Broodlord is a double Demonic Tutor, Hostile Investigator is kinda neat, because if they have few enough cards in hand you can make them immediately discard the card you gifted them, double discover off of Trumpeting Carnosaur seems good...idk. Of course cards like pilfer do nothing if they're empty-handed too, I just don't think the chance to hit something makes it meaningfully better when there's also a chance the card actively loses you the game.
