LOONEY TUNES RACING, PS1: i don't have a nose review

  • What's up, doc? I'll tell you what's up! The Looney Tunes are back for another game, and as usual it doesn't skimp out on the references to the old shorts. But is the gameplay itself as impressive, or is it downright 'desthhhpicable'?
    While on the surface this might look like a Crash Team Racing rip-off (and, to be honest, it kind of is), this game has potential. With tracks ranging from desert canyons to giant's gardens, this sounds like the perfect accompaniment to the original cartoons. And if that's not enough to entice you, if you win, you're granted one wish - anything your heart desires. Anything at all. I'm sure you won't be bitterly disappointed whatsoever. Ready? On your marks, get set... Let's get Looney!
    Oh and by the way, a massive thank you is due for 1000 subs! I'm currently working on one of my most highly requested movie games so see you soon for my 1000 sub special! Exciting stuff!

    My god, I LOVE THIS GAME, and I'm not even nostalgic for it, I played for the first time when I found a used copy a couple years ago, for like $5. Space Race is the superior game in terms of gameplay, but when it comes to been an homage to the classic cartoons, this one is way cooler. Overall, it's nice that Looney Tunes have two good kart racers. Great review, bro!

    I know there's an unusually large amount of Scooby Doo games, but I'd recommend Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights. It's by far the best PS2 Scooby Doo game I've seen (and I've played at least 4 of them) and yet there are some genuinely funny tropes, mainly because of how stupid they are (like a laugh track within the game). It's a lot of fun and i spent many hours as a kid playing it. I'd recommend checking it out!

    I played this back in 2019 on an emulator and it's a decent kart racer. It would be great if we could get a Warner Bros crossover kart racing game. Especially since they released the platform fighting game Multiversus. Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Tom & Jerry, characters from the DC universe, The Flinstones, The Jetsons, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Freakazoid, Dexter's Laboratory Johnny Bravo, The Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, Codename: Kids Next Door and way more properties to pull from. I feel like if WB came out with a kart racer using their properties, we would finally see a kart racer outside of Mario Kart become mainstream. I love other kart racers like Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway, Dreamworks All-Star Kart Racing, Disney Speedstorm, KartRider: Drift, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed, but they quickly fell under the radar.

    First off, let me congratulate you on getting over 1000 subs and the continued dedication to refining your review style and format. Well done, chap. 😉
    As I said, never played this simply because I could never find the darn thing to buy. Or rent, for that matter. Maybe once on the latter. I may just hunt it down now, if I can find a copy in good condition.
    Love seeing that Looney Tunes knowledge getting used yet again. I've been rewatching a bunch of shorts recently ('cos what else is there to do? XD) and seeing this really hits home how big the Looney Tunes' comeback in the mid-1990s really was. Twas a solid run of it too, up until 2004 and _Back In Action_ sort marked the popularity dropping off, for me at least. There's a very unique nostalgia that comes over me for this period. Similar type of feelings for the Muppets too, pre-Disney acquisition.
    Also, you seen any of the new LT toons? They just don't feel right. 😣
    I'm sure I've brought this up, but _Wacky Races starring Dastardly and Muttley_ on PS2 might be of interest to you. It's one of my personal favourites. 😁 Kart style driving, legitimately challenging races that require some strategy, a sort of similar token system to LTR regarding abilities, but you can actually choose what to use from a unique list depending on the racer. That and some surprisingly detailed tracks with lots of hidden books and crannies. Well worth a look.

    • @idonthaveanose
      @idonthaveanose  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you! 😁 Good to see you in the live chat again too! I agree with you about 90s Looney Tunes. Strangely, I was thinking of this the other day. The late 70s/80s Tunes were a bit stale for me but the 90s was a bit of a revival era. I don't mind Back in Action myself. It's not perfect but I think it's a good effort, even if it could have been better.
      Ahh, now, the new ones... I haven't seen many but actually... I kinda like what I see. Again, it's not at all perfect. But how I see it is, 90s Tunes seemed to mimic the cartoons from the 50s, to me. But these new ones feel very retro. They remind me a lot of the old 40s shorts. They're a bit hit and miss so far for me, but I certainly don't hate them.
      Also, that Wacky Races game, I REALLY need to get my hands on. I already have the PS1 game lined up to review at some point but that one looks far better. I'm not certain but was it on Dreamcast initially? If so, I may have played a bit of it.

      @DoctorInk20 Před 4 lety +1

      @@idonthaveanose Thanks! Glad to be there. 😉 Live commentary is always a laugh.
      Yeah, the '70s/'80s were more or less TV compilations of old shorts or one-off specials rehashing gags. I've seen virtually all of them. I'd say it was the triple-whammy of _Tiny Toons, Animaniacs_ and _Freakazoid!_ that laid the groundwork for _Space Jam_ being such a big hit.
      Oh the '40s style is nice. A good back-to-basics look, but it's just the jokes that feel weird. There's the one with Yosemite Sam and a rollercoatser and he has his skin ripped off his skeleton and it lands on a scarecrow prop. That's more _Ren & Stimpy_ than _Looney Tunes._ Just... Ew. 😝
      It's actually surprisingly rare. I think I came across it once in my local Cex 2 years ago, but even then I was amazed to see it. Was indeed on the Dreamcast first, for NTSC and PAL. Apparently, the PS2 version was only released in the PAL region. If you can get it, jump on it. It's a solid game, but it's also weird enough you'll get plenty of material out of it.
      Speaking of cartoon game rarities: _Animaniacs: The Great Edgar Hunt._

    • @idonthaveanose
      @idonthaveanose  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, the 70s/80s definitely have more of a nostalgic, Looney-Tunes-by-the-numbers feel, trying to squeeze in so many cameos and references to old shorts.
      Yeah, I do get what you mean! Some of the humour and expressions are a little grotesque. But I do think they have a lot more energy than the 80s shorts.
      I need to get my hands on it in that case. It's got to be better than the awful PS1 game anyway. 😂 Is the Animaniacs game worth finding?

    • @DoctorInk20
      @DoctorInk20 Před 4 lety +1

      @@idonthaveanose Good grief, I use too many words. XD To keep myself more to the point:
      1. Came down to money, really. Budgets were on the floor in the '70s and most of the '80s. As exemplified by Hanna-Barbera's line-up from then.
      2. Oh the horror! It's icky to me. XP _The Looney Tunes Show_ before it wasn't bad, but I miss the balance of dialogue and sight gags. Needs to be written like vaudeville theatre and not a sitcom.
      3. I just Googled WR PS1... why does this look like F-Zero but worse? XD
      From my research, probab its meer existence is pure oddity. Like who wanted an _Animaniacs_ game in *2005?*
      Look at this cover even: live.staticflickr.com/3092/3159959534_ecdba22136_b.jpg

    • @idonthaveanose
      @idonthaveanose  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, though if I'm honest I'd rather watch most of the 80s shorts and specials over the 60s Depatie-Freleng/Seven Arts cartoons.
      The Looney Tunes Show wasn't as bad as many said it was imo. But the sitcom format is too restrictive. It felt very watered down. Some good jokes in there but the wrong cast of characters. If you don't think of it in relation to the classic Looney Tunes shorts, I find it's okay.
      That's really weird timing for an Animaniacs game. Doesn't look to be that rare over here, it's fairly cheap on Amazon right now.
